Young people come to realize, sometimes painfully early, that it isn't always possible to depend on adults to make sure they are treated safely, fairly, and legally. Dynamos and Virgins Revisited: Women and Technological Change in History, first published by Scarecrow Press in 1979, was one of the first books published on the history of women and technology and laid the groundwork for decades of impressive and increasing scholarship in this field. This study provides a qualitative exploration of juvenile biographies of women, a genre defined here as a book dealing with the whole or partial life of an individual and reviewed as nonfiction for readers in elementary, middle, or junior high school. Beginning with a survey of juvenile material on Elizabeth Tudor published in England and the United States between 1852 and 2002, author Gale Eaton scrutinizes thirty-four books-juvenile biographies, histories, and collected biographies-for trends in both content and rhetoric.Well-Dressed Role Models: The Portrayal of Women in Biographies for Children then goes on to look at close readings of books published in the United States in the years 1946, 1971, and 1996 and presents a penetrating analysis of a genre that serves the needs of youth. The findings of this study include the fact that juvenile biographies make role models out of women who, in many cases, never would have become famous by following all the rules for good girls. By choice of subject and emphasis, their authors dress the life stories of real women in the appropriate values of new generations. Three appendixes providing annotated book lists for each of the three years analyzed conclude this study.

This book was compiled and edited by a librarian who was instrumental in getting funding from a Library Services and Technology Act grant to carry out an internship program in public libraries. The grant allowed the MCLS consortium of public libraries in the Los Angeles area to place library school students in paid internships in MCLS member libraries. The successful program was called ''From Interns to Library Leaders'' (FILL), and led in part to this book, which offers firsthand ''advice from the field'' provided by former public library interns and internship site supervisors. Contributors include a diverse group of voices and representative experiences from around the country, who had either worked as or supervised a student intern in one of the many fields of public librarianship (e.g., public services, children''s, technical services, branches, etc.). The result: eighteen chapters written by practitioners and library school faculty, who generously share what it''s like to participate in a public library internship.
