The French author known as Voltaire was born in 1694 to a noble family in the province of Poitou. Voltaire was a writer of the Enlightenment movement and was well known in his own time for his attacks on the Catholic Church and for advocating freedom of religion and expression and the separation of church and state. Candide is widely regarded as his masterpiece, and is taught perhaps more often than any other piece of French literature. An early English translator renamed his edition of the novel after Quasimodo, the cathedral's deformed bell-ringer in the story. That name has stuck for all English editions. One of Victor Hugo's most well-known works, this novel has been adapted to film more than a dozen times, including by Disney. Hugo wrote this story partly to celebrate the Gothic architecture of Paris, which was methodically being torn down in favor of more modern styles. As a result, there are large sections of this unabridged text that go into great detail on the architecture of the time. The novel was so well received in France that it led to a Gothic revival architectural movement and restoration efforts on the cathedral that are responsible for preserving its original style.

Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright, born in 1799 in Tours, France. His father was Secretary to the King's Council and a Freemason, and his mother came from a wealthy family of haberdashers. Balzac had difficulty with the strict nature of his early schooling, and was often sent to punishment in a small isolated cell. This caused early health problems that plagued him throughout his life-exacerbated by his rigorous writing schedule. Balzac is viewed as one of the founders of realism in European literature, creating complex characters who are flawed, morally ambiguous, and absolutely human. Many of his works have been translated into other languages, and made into movies, and he influenced many other well known writers, including Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo, and Charles Dickens.This bilingual edition is designed to assist those learning French. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, in 1865, where his father was Principal and Professor of Architectural Sculpture at an art school. Kipling's early years in India inspired much of his literary work, including The Jungle Book, which is a collection of stories, rather than a single narrative. The first three of these stories-"Mowgli's Brothers," "Kaa's Hunting," and "Tiger!
