This volume is related to the Russian Army during the zar Alexander I era, and are about the Guards cavalry regiments in use from 1801 to 1825. Compiled at Saint Petersburg during the year from 1837 and 1851, the Historical Description of the Clothing and Arms of the Russian Army has had an enormous impact and great importance for the study on the history of Russian costume and uniformology development over the past centuries .There are various ancient editions of the work but Mark Conrad's translation is the first one and the best, remaining true to the original structure and essential style of the text. Conrad's comprehensive translation is an indispensable resource for today's historian, strategists, and scholars. The Viskovatov's enormous work is based on a great quantity of archival documents and contains four thousand colored and b/w illustrations. It is composed by 30 or 34 volumes (1st edition 1-30, St. Petersburg, 1841-62, and 2nd edition Vols. 1-34, St. Petersburg - Novosibirsk - Leningrad, 1899-1948). The topics discussed start from the early czars until the late nineteenth century. Our new edition has enriched the book with the plates: we revised and colored many of the images so far available just in black and white, as well we found some rare color plates with the collaboration of private collectors. Rimasto poco conosciuto fino ai nostri giorni, l'assedio di Cartagena de Indias rappresentò il punto apicale di scontro tra Spagna e Gran Bretagna durante la cosiddetta Guerra dell'Orecchio di Jenkins (1739-42) e si risolse nel peggior disastro navale della storia britannica. Questo episodio venne però presto dimenticato in entrambi i paesi. In Gran Bretagna la sconfitta subì un processo di rimozione. Archiviato come un episodio sfortunato, causato da un morbo tropicale, il fallimento della spedizione a Cartagena de Indias venne sminuito e nascosto agli occhi dell'opinione pubblica interna.Forse troppo impegnata in quel momento a combattere per celebrare le sue vittorie, e forse non avendo capito pienamente la portata storica dell'evento, anche la Spagna si dimenticò presto dell'impresa di Cartagena de Indias. O, forse, preferì lasciarsela alle spalle, quando, a partire dalla fine della guerra di successione austriaca, subentrò una nuova fase distensiva nelle relazioni con la Gran Bretagna. La memoria della fallita spedizione contro Cartagena de Indias per tanti anni rimase così perduta tra i meandri della storia. Dopo la sconfitta di Caporetto alleati ed avversari ritenevano oramai certo il crollo definitivo dell'Italia. Eppure, solo qualche mese più tardi, il Regio Esercito era tornato pienamente efficiente, e respinse l'ultima offensiva austro-ungarica, la cui riuscita era data per certa dai comandanti imperiali. Il presente volume, il primo ad esser dedicato esclusivamente alla battaglia del Solstizio, analizza ciò che per l'Italia fu l'equivalente del "Miracolo della Marna": dai comandanti alla struttura degli eserciti in lotta, agli avvenimenti giorno per giorno, analizzando documenti spesso inediti e attraverso testimonianze dell'epoca, per descrivere quello che fu il maggior successo del Regio Esercito nel corso della propria storia. In appendice, le Medaglie d'Oro al Valor Militare conferite, l'elenco delle Brigate italiane impiegate e dei relativi Reggimenti, e, ad illustrare le diverse fasi della battaglia, numerose foto concesse dallo Stato Maggiore dell'Esercito Italiano.

Cavie umane, nell'originale Killing Our Own (letteralmente, "Uccidendo i nostri", inteso come i nostri cittadini, i nostri soldati, noi stessi) nasce nel 1982, sotto l'ombra che si allunga a dismisura dell'incidente di Three Mile Island. Oggi come allora, l'informazione libera da interessi, rispettosa della complessità dei temi legati all'energia, intellettualmente onesta (non "equidistante e indipendente", perché un autore serio prende sempre posizione) non era e non è abbastanza presente per aiutare il pubblico a trovare il filo delle cose. L'attualità di Killing Our Own si è purtroppo riproposta puntualmente: mentre ne veniva ultimata la presente edizione le notizie da Fukushima hanno invaso i media ed è apparso evidente ancora una volta come le storie di sofferenze, malgoverno e manovre più o meno occulte che Killing Our Own denuncia non siano esclusiva degli Stati Uniti.
