Originally published in 1907, this rascally collection of Rabbit stories was one of the favorite books of acclaimed writer Joan Didion (The Year of Magical Thinking), who kept this book in her collection throughout her life..Dorothy, a little southern girl, has a pet kitten named Kim, and every evening after supper site tells one of these stories into his sleepy ears. The rabbit is the hero of the story, but the adventures in which he figures are thoroughly new and laughable on their own account. He hears of the doings of rascally Captain Crow, of Major Possum. Colonel Coon, and General Bear; the "Peace Supper,"-first of conventions of this sort which have come to naught.-"The Moonlight Dance," and the various other happenings of sage-brush land. Each episode has an illustration by E. Warde Blaisdell.

  • von Arthur Waley
    20,00 €

This splendid collection of Chinese poetry, accompanied by delightful introductory and descriptive essays, spans more than 1000 years. It brings to life the timeless poetry of many of the well known Chinese poets that have lived throughout the ages.Arthur Waley is the most famous Sinologist who has done most in bringing Chinese poetry to the fore of Western public. Hence, no matter what, Waley's historical importance cannot be overestimated. And he is a competent all-round translator too, as this fine anthology demonstrates, one who has an uncanny ear of transforming Chinese rhythms and rhymes into naturalized English metrics.First published in 1919, this is the book that first alerted the West to the richness and variety of Chinese literature. Arthur Waley (1889-1966), a shy reclusive scholar, was one of the earliest champions of Asian literature in the English-speaking world.A Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems has often been cited as an outstanding source for those who enjoy Chinese Poetry.

  • von Juliet Bredon
    22,00 €

"Hundred Altars" is a village in Northern Chinn, whose inhabitants are presented so convincingly that one recognises first-hand knowledge of the country. The main theme is the Chinaman's hunger for sons. Chinese beliefs and customs are dealt with in detail here, yet all as part of a novel full of interplay of character. In this impressive novel Juliet Bredon penetrates to the soul of that vast country, revealing its people, its customs, its struggles as they have seldom, if ever, been revealed before. The soul of a nation lies in the hearts of its peasantry, and it is of the peasantry that this novel unforgettably deals. We see them here in their strange humility, with those traits of character so curious to our eyes.Juliet Bredon has, for many years, lived in China, and it is evident that she knows China and understands her deeply and with sympathy.

  • von Theo H. Gift
    20,00 €

Quite in Theo. Gift's best vein are these stories adapted from the Birth Stories of Buddha. They teem with wit and satire-which will be fully appreciated by both adults and the children for whom they are written. Some of the tales seem strangely familiar, despite-or in consequence of-their Eastern origin. As is well known, many-nearly all, in fact-of the tales that have been told to children through the Ages are derived from the simple folk-lore of the imaginative Orient, and hence it is that a definite connection may be traced between the Birth Stories of Buddha and the nursery tales so dear to our own childhood. It suffices to say that these fairy tales, excellent in themselves, are rendered all the more entertaining on account of the choice illustrations from the brush of 0. Von Glehn, and the tasteful binding and general get-up of this latest addition to the mystic lore of nurserydom. Once more it is shown how much greater are the privileges of the child of to-day than those enjoyed by a former generation. ¿"Of the books for youthful readers which year by year herald the return of Christinas, some rather more than average specimens have reached us. Fairy Tales from Ike Far East by Theo. Gift, are culled from Professor Rhys David's translation of the Birth, Stories of Buddha. They are skillfully arranged and adapted for the use of children by Theo. Gift. Each little tale, or fable, contains some simple homely moral." - Westminster Review

  • von L. C. Arlington
    16,00 €

Lewis Charles Arlington, (author of In Search of Old Peking) is an American who worked in Beijing at the end of the Qing and the beginning of the Republic of China. In this essay he attempted to introduce the subject of Chinese pulses to a western audience. Strictly judging from the medical content of his work, his recitation of the various Chinese pulses is commendable as a quick summary of the basic information on the subject. Although it is not a comprehensive study of pulses that could be used to guide clinical treatment, it provides a glimpse into the vast and complex subject through western eyes. This version of his article had been skillfully edited to remove Arlington's obvious biases against Chinese medicine and the Chinese culture. By doing so we are left with a text that conveys a basic understanding of pulses that allows the lay person to gain an understanding of this complex field of Traditional Chinese Medicine.Arlington wrote his original text at a time when doctors in the west still believed that syphilis was due to the degeneration of the thyroid gland and not -as we know today- a Treponema pallidum infection. The author's overconfidence in the superiority of his erroneous beliefs over the Chinese theories is a timely reminder that in science there are no absolutes. With Chinese medicine becoming massively popular worldwide and with the advancements of conventional medicine, some of the author's rudest comments are now quite embarrassing and fortunately are removed from this edition. In regards to the 21st century, it's very disconcerting that Arlington's terms such as "quackery" used in the text to describe Chinese medicine could also very well portray many of the early 20th century western practices. It's also very disturbing that the same term still persists in current literature although clinical evidence to the contrary has become abundant. The editing and publication of this text by Mark Linden O'Meara comes at a time when it's important to look back and re-examine the relentless criticism that Chinese medicine had to face even before Nixon's historic trip to China, and also ascertain that modern arguments are often no better than Arlington's imperialist attempts to vilification.

To all men who are in a rut and want to get out; this volume is earnestly and sincerely dedicated. Having some reputation as a Hypnotist and an expert student of human nature, I have been written to by many persons for advice and help. The book that you're holding in your hands is a new translation for Boym's "Clavis Medica ad Chinarum doctrinam de pulsibus" (The Medical Key to the Chinese doctrines of the pulse). This translation holds many secrets.Boym's work has been much distorted and sadly only printed in fragments. Yet, even after so many centuries there has never been a complete attempt to put together all the fragments and conclusively attach each piece of the puzzle to a specific Chinese text. The modern Chinese Medicine reader or those involved in the fields of Humanities, Medical Anthropology or Sinology will greatly benefit from such an investigation and gain much perspective about Boym's impact within their own respective fields. "A vital step towards finally and decisively understanding and appreciating Boym's work in context that has been missing from bibliography until now" - Dr. Ioannis Solos Ph. D, Doctor of Medicine, Chinese Medical Author, Sinologist

Peter Goullart was brought up in the Orient and spent most of his life there. Forgotten Kingdom describes his years in the ancient forgotten Chinese Kingdom of Nakhi in Yunnan, by the Tibetan border, where, as a representative of the Chinese Industrial Co-operatives, he really mixed with the people and the culture. It is is a book about paradise by a man who lived there for nine years. It is not easy to write a good book about paradise, but people are Mr. Goullart's forte, and when he mixes us up with the Nakhis he delivers us up to his idyll. Likiang itself, its sunlight and its owners and its rushing waters, its wine shops and caravans, its glints of danger, its swagger and its happy laughter, is beautifully captured in his story of adapting to and living in the Lijiang culture. "Forbidden Kingdom" is an incredible verbal picture painted by Peter Goullart's first-hand account of the changes that happened during the 1940's in the Naxi Chinese area.Forgotten Kingdom was written during the time when this "Silk Road" Town was the only access point for outside goods to China during WWII.

The House Without Windows is an imaginative child's name for the world of untouched nature - because that world is itself nothing but one clear window upon beauty, which is a child's reality. The romantic story, printed exactly as written by a nine-year-old girl, is a clear and delicate record of discontent with ordinary pedestrian reality - with mere human parents and what they can provide. In meadows and woodland, by the sea, on the icy crags of mountains, the child - heroine, a runaway seeker, learns to understand the whispered language of nature. The story has something to say to children and perhaps even more to all who are interested in children. The volume contains an adequate explanatory note by the author's father.

After teaching for over 35 years, he began to train teachers of what has now become known as the Alexander Technique.Written by the founder of the Alexander Technique, this book lays down some of the foundation principles in regards to posture, body use, 'conscious guidance' of movement, habit, and the Alexander Technique in general. This work dealing with the science of Mesmerism is written by J, Coates, P.H.D., who says as follows-it is written in every-day language. I ask them to take it as it is-as something more than a mere introduction to a most interesting and important subject. In the following pages the difference between Animal Magnetism and Hypnotism may be traced throughout every chapter. To alleviate pain and suffering, to cure others of diseases and ailments without drugs or the surgeon's knife, is to engage in work evoking the keenest human sympathy. Here is one of the noblest callings to which humankind can devote its energies- a work of sympathy, love and devotion to our fellow mortals and that science is Mesmerism and Hypnotism; by its influence you can cure diseases and extend powerful influence over the mind of others without their knowledge. This book is now left to tell its own tale and it will repay careful perusal.

"In these lectures I will endeavour to justify the faith that is in me and to explain the grounds on which I base my belief that Confucianism is still a living force among the Chinese people and has a message of great value for the China of the present and future and provide and answer to the question "What is Confucianism? If we wish to form an adequate idea of Confucianism we must make an effort to look at it from within, and to approximate as closely as possible to the standpoint of those who are themselves among the loyal guardians of the great Confucian heritage."-Reginald Fleming Johnston.Johnston provides a unique insight in outlining the fourteen Confucian texts and describes the challenges that Confucianism was to face during the revolutionary times of the early 1900''s.While written almost one hundred years ago, this book provides the reader with valuable insight into a significant aspect of Chinese culture.

Written in 1913, this book provides a historical perspective on Buddism in China as well as detailed descriptions of legends of the past, the temples in existence in the early 1900''s, and a remarkable sense of insight into the revolutionary times and the impact on Buddhist. Johnston writes dearly of his times in China. The early chapters of this book deal with the origin and development of some characteristic features of Mahayana Buddhism, especially in respect of the forms assumed by that branch of the Buddhist system in its Chinese environment. The sixth and seventh chapters are concerned with religious pilgrimages in China, and with those sacred mountains which are the homes of Chinese monasticism arid the radiating centres of Buddhist influence. Of these favoured seats of religious activity, the six last chapters contain detailed accounts of two which are taken as typical namely, the holy mountain of Chiu-hua, in the province of Anhui, and the holy island of Puto (Pootoo), off the coast of Chehkiang. The author is glad to record his grateful appreciation of the unvarying courtesy and hospitality extended to him by the abbots and monks in whose romantic mountain-homes he has spent the happiest days of his fifteen years sojourn in China. Whatever may be the ultimate fate of Buddhism, he earnestly hopes that neither his kindly hosts nor their successors will ever be driven away from the quiet hermitages which they so justly love; and that it may continue to be China''s glory and privilege to provide, amid the forests and crags and waterfalls of her cloistral mountains, homes or resting-places for all pilgrims to the shrines of truth and beauty.Johnston is well known as the tutor to the last emperor and one of the few foreigners allowed inside the walls of the Forbidden City. His book Twilight in the Forbidden city was the basis of the movie The Last Emperor.
