Volume 21 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains 5 contributions from various areas of drug research and therapy. As in previous volumes, in the present volume the authors have also tried not only to summarise the current status of particular fields of drug research, but also to provide leads for future research activity. The various contributions in this volume will be of especial value not only to those actively concerned in resolving the diverse problems in drug research, but also to those who wish to keep abreast ofthe latest developments in­ fluencing modem therapy. In addition, it is believed that volume 21 and the previous 20 volumes of "Progress in Drug Research" so far published represent a useful reference work of an encyclopaedic character. Numerous well-presented and important papers from the conference are gathered in the proceedings for the purpose of pointing directions for useful future research in diverse areas of mathematics including algebraic geometry, analysis, commutative algebra, complex analysis, discrete mathematics, dynamical systems, number theory and topology.

Satellite Technologies in Geoinformation Science

This is the first systematic presentation of the capacitory approach and symmetrization in the context of complex analysis. The content of the book is original - the main part has not been covered by existing textbooks and monographs. After an introduction to the theory of condenser capacities in the plane, the monotonicity of the capacity under various special transformations (polarization, Gonchar transformation, averaging transformations and others) is established, followed by various types of symmetrization which are one of the main objects of the book. By using symmetrization principles, some metric properties of compact sets are obtained and some extremal decomposition problems are solved. Moreover, the classical and present facts for univalent and multivalent meromorphic functions are proven. This book will be a valuable source for current and future researchers in various branches of complex analysis and potential theory.

This book is concerned with cardinal number valued functions defined for any Boolean algebra. Examples of such functions are independence, which assigns to each Boolean algebra the supremum of the cardinalities of its free subalgebras, and cellularity, which gives the supremum of cardinalities of sets of pairwise disjoint elements. Twenty-one such functions are studied in detail, and many more in passing. The questions considered are the behaviour of these functions under algebraic operations such as products, free products, ultraproducts, and their relationships to one another.Assuming familiarity with only the basics of Boolean algebras and set theory, through simple infinite combinatorics and forcing, the book reviews current knowledge about these functions, giving complete proofs for most facts. A special feature of the book is the attention given to open problems, of which 185 are formulated.Based on Cardinal Functions on Boolean Algebras (1990) and Cardinal Invariants on Boolean Algebras (1996) by the same author, the present work is much larger than either of these. It contains solutions to many of the open problems of the earlier volumes. Among the new topics are continuum cardinals on Boolean algebras, with a lengthy treatment of the reaping number. Diagrams at the end of the book summarize the relationships between the functions for many important classes of Boolean algebras, including interval algebras, tree algebras and superatomic algebras.

The three-dimensional device simulation has become a necessary tool for the design and investigation of complex device structures. The evolution of the three-dimensional simulation tools is directly linked to the scaling of the devices and the increasing complex­ ity of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) cells. Scaling of MOSFET devices led to a three-dimensional geometry with effects which cannot be handled by two-dimensional simulations anymore. With increasing integration density in DRAMs the third dimen­ sion had to be utilized to realize the storage capacitor. The result­ ing leakage problems have to be investigated and the cell design optimized by means of three-dimensional simulations. This book is intended for senior undergraduate students in applied physics, electrical engineering and computational physics, as well as for scientists and engineers involved in semiconductor device re­ search and development. It is also intended for software engineers and all those who are concerned with simulation. The book will give an overview on the problems and activities con­ cerning three-dimensional device simulation, without the claim of being a classical textbook. It starts from the classical semiconduc­ tor equations, discusses the physical models used in device simu­ lation, describes the discretization and some numerical methods for solving the differential equations. The application of the three­ dimensional simulation to VLSI device engineering is illustrated by a few specific examples.
