Das Buch gibt einen Gesamtüberblick über das Fachgebiet der Steuerung und Regelung von Turboflugtriebwerken. Neben allgemein technischen Grundlagen und Zusammenhängen werden auch einige historische Entwicklungen aufgezeigt. Ausgangspunkt für alle Darstellungen ist das Triebwerk als Regelstrecke, zusammen mit den operativen Anforderungen. Die verschiedenen Triebwerkbauformen und ihre Thermodynamik werden behandelt und die wichtigsten Steuer- und Regelkonzepte vorgestellt. Beschrieben werden ferner die typischen Ausführungsformen der Sensoren und Stellglieder sowie Geräte zur Umsetzung der Steuer-und Regelalgorithmen, die heute üblicherweise als "Digitale Regler" ausgeführt sind. Das Buch wendet sich an den Entwicklungsingenieur in der Industrie, an Studenten des Fachgebietes Regelungstechnik, an die Praktiker bei Luftfahrtgesellschaften und der Bundeswehr sowie an Beamte entsprechender Behörden. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Bauerfeind war für 25 Jahre Leiter der Fachgebiete Regelung und Thermodynamik im Entwicklungsbereich der Firma MTU und ist heute freier Mitarbeiter.

Increasing environmental degradation and instability, due to anthropogenic activities and in particular the increasing fragility of the soil resource, has led to an increased awareness of the need to develop practices resulting in more sustainable natural and agroecosystems.

The idea of organising a colloquium on turbulence emerged during the sabbatical leave of Prof. Arkady Tsinober in Zurich. New experimental observations and the insight gained through direct numerical simulations have been stimulating research in turbulence and are leading to the developments of new concepts. The organisers felt the necessity to bring together researchers who have contributed significantly to the advances in this field in a colloquium in which the current achievements and the future development in the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches would be discussed. The main emphasis of the colloquium was put on discussions. These discussions led to an interesting and exciting exchange of ideas, but also involved its very laborious transcription onto paper. It was due to the personal efforts of Mrs. A. Vyskocil, Dr. N. Malik and Dr. X. Studerus that this work could be completed. The colloquium was held in the relaxed atmosphere of the Centro Stefano Franscini in Monte Verita near Ascona, a locality of exceptional natural beauty, which was put at our disposal by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Dieses kompakte Lehrbuch ist der erste von zwei einführenden Bänden in die Analysis. Es zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass es alle klassischen Themen der Analysis im ersten Semester genau im Umfang einer vierstündigen Vorlesung präsentiert und gleichzeitig auf typische Anfängerschwierigkeiten eingeht. Dazu gehören eine Einführung in die formale Sprache der Mathematik und in die wichtigsten mathematischen Beweistechniken, ebenso wie vorlesungserprobte plakative Erläuterungen von anfangs ungewohnten abstrakten Begriffen. Alle prüfungsrelevanten Inhalte, von Folgen und Reihen über die Differential- und Integralrechnung von Funktionen einer reellen Variablen bis zum Satz von Taylor, werden abgedeckt und mit Beispielen, Gegenbeispielen und Übungsaufgaben illustriert. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that are involved in many physiological and pathological processes. The present book discusses the design and development of different classes of inhibitors of important classes of MMPs, such as gelatinases and collagenases.

The book provides a comprehensive introduction to compact finite difference methods for solving boundary value ODEs with high accuracy. The corresponding theory is based on exact difference schemes (EDS) from which the implementable truncated difference schemes (TDS) are derived. The TDS are now competitive in terms of efficiency and accuracy with the well-studied numerical algorithms for the solution of initial value ODEs. Moreover, various a posteriori error estimators are presented which can be used in adaptive algorithms as important building blocks. The new class of EDS and TDS treated in this book can be considered as further developments of the results presented in the highly respected books of the Russian mathematician A. A. Samarskii. It is shown that the new Samarskii-like techniques open the horizon for the numerical treatment of more complicated problems.The book contains exercises and the corresponding solutions enabling the use as a course text or for self-study. Researchers and students from numerical methods, engineering and other sciences will find this book provides an accessible and self-contained introduction to numerical methods for solving boundary value ODEs.

The authors carefully consider current and future potential therapeutic approaches for the abortive as well as preventive treatment of migraine. The pioneering work by Professor Michael A. Moskowitz's group at Harvard gave rise to the "neurogenic hypothesis" of migraine pathogenesis and to an intel­ lectual framework for many aspects of migraine research through a detailed phar­ macological characterization of the trigeminovascular system. This knowledge then spurred detailed research worldwide into the roles of the dural vasculature, trigem­ inal nerve fibers, and sensory neuropeptides, such as substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide, in migraine. Similar in-depth investigations have not been made of the role of the seventh cranial parasympathetic nerves but this area war­ rants further study because of its potential for interactions with the trigeminovas­ cular system and its clear involvement in cluster headache.

Allelochemicals play a great role in managed and natural ecosystems. The book emphasizes the role of allelochemicals in shaping the structure of plant communities in a broader ecological perspective. Der. vorliegende Band enthält eine Reihe von einführenden Vorlesungen, die von verschiedenen Autoren im Rahmen von zwei DMV-Seminaren zum Thema "Algebraische Transjormationsgruppen und Invariantentheorie" gehalten wur­ den. Entsprechend der allgemeinen Zielsetzung der DMV-Seminare sollten sowohl grundlegende Techniken und Resultate vorgestellt als auch Einblicke in aktuelle Entwickl~ngen gegeben werden. Was die Grundlagen anbetrifft, so haben wir sie hier nicht in vollem Umfang widergegeben. Im Bedarfsfall mag der Leser unsere Bücher "Geometrische Methoden in der Invariantentheorie"l und "Invariant Theory"2 zu Rate ziehen, auf die sich die einführenden Vorträge stützten. Leider konnten auch nicht alle aktuellen Entwicklungen berücksichtigt werden, über die im Seminar berichtet wurde. Die Ziele der hier vorliegenden Beiträge, auf deren Inhalt wir in der Einführung ausführlicher eingehen werden, sind entsprechend unterschiedlicher Natur. Einige liefern Darstellungen bereits publizierter Theorien, wobei sie allerdings ein größeres Gewicht auf Motivation und die Ausführung von Beispie­ len legen, als dies in den Originalarbeiten möglich war. Andere leiten grundle­ gende Resultate auf neue "reise her oder stellen sie aus anderer Sicht dar. Schließlich werden auch noch einzelne Einblicke in aktuelle Forschungsrichtun­ gen gegeben. Wir hoffen, daß durch diesen Band zahlreiche Resultate der Theorie der algebraischen Transformationsgruppen leichter zugänglich geworden sind, und daß der Leser mit ihm eine nützliche Basis für die Lektüre aktueller Forschungsarbeiten erhält.

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) represent the first class of antihypertensive agents that was designed and developed on the basis of a well-defined physiopathological axis of arterial hypertension, a vascular dis­ order that is now becoming one of the major causes of morbidity/mortality, not only in developed societies but also in the highly populated developing coun­ tries [1]. CAPTOPRIL, the prototype of the "PRIL" family, which now comprises more than 40 molecule-species, was quite hazardous and the clinical develop­ ment almost failed when serious side-effects were reported in an alarmist fash­ ion in reputable scientific journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet. Squibb & Sons came very close to withdrawing CAPTOPRIL from clinical investigation [2]. However, after re-examination of the data obtained from different categories of patients and appropriate dose-adjustments, the clinical use of CAPTOPRIL turned out to be revolutionary. The prototype, as well as other members of the "PRIL" family became the starting point for numerous basic and clinical research programs, focusing on the interactions of ACEI with the kinin, endothelin, and nitric oxide systems, and the contribution of the receptors for AT I, AT 2, bradykinin Bland B , ETA and ET B to the pharmacological actions 2 of the respective peptides. This research activity led to the development of new pharmacological agents, such as the angiotensin receptor antagonists and, more recently, the neutral endopeptidase inhibitors. In the near future, bradykinin receptor antagonists also will be available to modulate ACEI phar­ macological actions.

Building on the existing titles in the "Airways Smooth Muscle" sub-series, the sixth volume explores physiological and pharmacological processes in the lung in vivo. The various animal models available for studying the bronchospasm and inflammation associated with human asthma are thoroughly reviewed by internationally recognised scientists. Specific chapters focus on the problems of administering drugs to animal airways, the mechanics of assessing lung function in the models, and describe in detail the species used, from rodents to primates. The use of genetically altered animals, an area of particular interest to molecular biologists, is also considered in depth. Twenty five years ago, Bill Stebbins presented the principles of animal psychophysics in an edited volume (Stebbins, 1970) describing an array of modem, creative methodologies for investigating the range of sensory systems in a variety of vertebrate species.

The German land of Hesse (Bundesland Hessen) is well known for its excellent wines (Rheinhessen), for its financial centre and for its airport (FrankfurtlMain). It is, unjustifiably, far less well known for its importance to thennoregulation. Within the small area of Bad Nauheim, Giessen and Marburg (in alphabetical order) a greater concentration of students of thenno­ regulation has been trained or worked or is working than probably in any other single area of Europe, if not the world. It is thus most appropriate to hold the Ninth International Symposium on the Pharmacology of Thennoregulation in Giessen, from August 7 to 12, 1994. The community of students of thennoregulation was extremely grateful that Professor Kurt Bruck and the lustus-Liebig-University of Giessen had extended this invitation. The same community was even more saddened that Kurt Bruck died on April 27, 1992 and thus could not participate in this event that had been planned to honour his achievements. As a small token of friendship and affection, the many friends of Kurt Bruck from all over the world who will participate in this event dedicate this symposium to the memory of Kurt Bruck. Another staunch friend, researcher of temperature regulation and supporter of this series of symposia died in October 1993: Professor Wilhelm Siegmund Feldberg. We feel fortunate to be able to start this volume with two brief infonnal and personal accounts of professors Bruck and Feldberg.
