This book is concerned with the role played by modules of infinite length when dealing with problems in the representation theory of groups and algebras, but also in topology and geometry; it shows the intriguing interplay between finite and infinite length modules.

A collection of articles emphasizing modern interpolation theory, a topic which has seen much progress in recent years. These ideas and problems in operator theory, often arising from systems and control theories, bring the reader to the forefront of current research in this area.

The book contains a collection of 21 original research papers which report on recent developments in various fields of nonlinear analysis. The collection covers a large variety of topics ranging from abstract fields such as algebraic topology, functional analysis, operator theory, spectral theory, analysis on manifolds, partial differential equations, boundary value problems, geometry of Banach spaces, measure theory, variational calculus, and integral equations, to more application-oriented fields like control theory, numerical analysis, mathematical physics, mathematical economy, and financial mathematics. The book is addressed to all specialists interested in nonlinear functional analysis and its applications, but also to postgraduate students who want to get in touch with this important field of modern analysis. It is dedicated to Alfonso Vignoli who has essentially contributed to the field, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday.

This book is devoted to a study of the unit groups of orders in skew fields, finite dimensional and central over the rational field; it thereby belongs to the field of noncommutative arithmetic. Its purpose is a synopsis of results and methods, including full proofs of the most important results.

This book is based on the proceedings of the Colloquium on Mathematics and Computer Science held in the University of Versailles-St-Quentin on September 18- It contains articles on topics that are relevant both to Mathematics and 20, 2000. to Computer Science. This unique book presents a profound mathematical analysis of general optimization problems for elliptic systems, which are then applied to a great number of optimization problems in mechanics and technology. Accessible and self-contained, it is suitable as a textbook for graduate courses on optimization of elliptic systems.

The main topics presented in this book deal with methods from functional analysis applied to the study ofsmall movements and normal oscillations ofhydrome­ chanical systems having cavities filled with either ideal or viscous fluids. The book is a sequel to and at the same time substantially extends the volume entitled "Opera­ tor Methods in Linear Hydrodynamics: Evolution and Spectral Problems," by N. D. Kopachevsky, S.G. Krein, and Ngo Zuy Kan that was published in 1989 by the Nauka publishing house in Moscow. The present book includesseveral new problems on the oscillations ofpartially dissipative hydrosystems and the oscillations of visco-elastic or relaxing fluids. The contents of this book do not overlap almost at all with the ones in the following volumes: "Mathematical Problems of the Motion of Viscous Incopressible Fluids," by O. A. Ladyzhenskaya, "The Dynamics ofBodies with Cavities Filled with Fluids," by N. N. Moiseev and V. V. Rumiantzev, "Navier-Stokes Equations," by R. Temam, and "Boundary Problems for Navier-Stokes Equations," by S. M. Belonosov and K. A. Chernous. Mainly, the contents of the present book rely on the authors' and their students' works. Gerhard Gentzen (1909-1945) ist der Begründer der modernen mathematischen Beweistheorie. Die nachhaltige Bedeutung der von ihm entwickelten Methoden, Regeln und Strukturen zeigt sich heute in wichtigen Teilgebieten der Informatik, in der Verifikation von Programmen. Die Arbeiten Gentzens über das natürliche Schliessen, der Sequenzenkalkül und die Ordinal-Beweistheorie beeindrucken noch heute durch ihre Einsicht und Eleganz. Der Autor dokumentiert in dieser ersten umfassenden Biografie Leben und Werk Gerhard Gentzens, seinen tragischen Lebensweg, Festnahme 1945 in Prag, Gefangenschaft und Tod. This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the Workshop on Cryptography and Computational Number Theory, CCNT'99, which has been held in Singapore during the week of November 22-26, 1999. The idea for this workshop grew out of the recognition of the recent, rapid development in various areas of cryptography and computational number the ory.

In the centenary year of the publication of Bachelier's thesis, what today is considered as the foundation of modern finance, we had the opportunity to invite experts in this relatively new field in mathematics to participate in a meeting at the University of Konstanz, Germany. This could be the place to consider the historical development, but as Professor Girlich presented a remarkable lecture on the past of what now is known as mathematical finance, we refer the reader to the article in this volume. Instead w etak e the opportunity to express our thanks to those colleagues who made this workshop possible: to Professor Sondermann, University of Bonn, Ger­ many, who in a sense initiated the idea, to our friends Mark Davis, Robert Elliott, and Xun Yu Zhou, whose advices were extremely helpful in establishing the pro­ gram of the conference, and to the invited lecturers Nicole EI Karoui, Ec khard Platen, and Stan Pliska for carefully preparing their lectures. The second volume collects articles by prize winners and speakers of the mini-symposia. This two-volume set thus gives an overview of the state of the art in many fields of mathematics and is therefore of interest to every professional mathematician.

The Third European Congress of Mathematics (3ecm) took place from July 10th to July 14th, 2000 in Barcelona. It was organised by the Societat Catalana de Matematiques (Catalan Mathematical Society), under the auspices of the Euro­ pean Mathematical Society (EMS). As foreseen by the EMS and the International Mathematical Union, this Congress was a major event in World Mathematical Year 2000. In addition to reviewing outstanding research achievements, important aspects of the life of European mathematics were discussed. Mathematics is undergoing a period of rapid changes. Effective computation and applications in science and technology go ever more hand in hand with con­ ceptual developments. It was one of the aims of 3ecm to reflect this mutual enrich­ ment, while steering present and future trends of mathematical sciences. In fact, the motto of the Congress, Shaping the 21st Century, was meant to capture these views. Nearly 1400 people from 87 countries gathered together in the Palau de Con­ gressos of Barcelona in order to take part in the activities of the 3ecm scientific programme: Nine plenary lectures, thirty invited lectures in parallel sessions, lec­ tures given by EMS prize winners, ten mini-symposia on special topics, seven round tables, poster sessions, presentations of mathematical software and video exhibitions. Twenty events were satellites of 3ecm in various countries.

Brunello Terreni (1953-2000) was a researcher and teacher with vision and dedication. The present volume is dedicated to the memory of Brunello Terreni. His mathematical interests are reflected in 20 expository articles written by distinguished mathematicians. The unifying theme of the articles is "evolution equations and functional analysis", which is presented in various and diverse forms: parabolic equations, semigroups, stochastic evolution, optimal control, existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions, inverse problems as well as applications. To mark the World Mathematical Year 2000 an International Conference on Number Theory and Discrete Mathematics in honour of the legendary Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanuj~ was held at the centre for Advanced study in Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India during October 2-6, 2000.

These papers are followed by a leading article entitled Sonja Kovalevsky: Her life and professorship in Stockholm, written especially for this volume by Jan-Erik Bjork in preparation for his major address to the Symposium.

This book is based on lectures given at the Global Analysis Research Center (GARC) of Seoul National University in 1999and at Peking University in 1999and 2000. This book is a natural sequel to the book on pseudo-differential operators [103] and the book on Weyl transforms [102] by the author.

This volume is based on the proceedings of the Toeplitz Lectures 1999 and of the Workshop in Operator Theory held in March 1999 at Tel-Aviv University and at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The workshop was held on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Harry Dym, and the Toeplitz lecturers were Harry Dym and Jim Rovnyak. The papers in the volume reflect Harry's influence on the field of operator theory and its applications through his insights, his writings, and his personality. The volume begins with an autobiographical sketch, followed by the list ofpublications ofHarry Dym and the paper ofIsrael Gohberg: On Joint Work with Harry Dym. The following paper by Jim Rovnyak: Methods of Krdn Space Operator The­ ory, is based on his Toeplitz lectures. It gives a survey ofold and recents methods of KreIn space operator theory along with examples from function theory, espe­ cially substitution operators on indefinite Dirichlet spaces and their relation to coefficient problems for univalent functions, an idea pioneered by 1. de Branges and underlying his proof of the Bieberbach conjecture (see [9]). The remaining papers (arranged in the alphabetical order) can be divided into the following categories. Schur analysis and interpolation In Notes on Interpolation in the Generalized Schur Class. I, D. Alpay, T. Con­ stantinescu, A. Dijksma, and J. Rovnyak use realization theory for operator colli­ gations in Pontryagin spaces to study interpolation and factorization problems in generalized Schur classes.

We offer the reader of this book some specimens of "infinity" that we seized from the "mathematical jungle" and trapped within the solid cage of analysis The creation of the theory of singular integral equations in the mid 20th century is associated with the names of N.1. Muskhelishvili, F.D. Gakhov, N.P. Vekua and their numerous students and followers and is marked by the fact that it relied principally on methods of complex analysis. In the early 1960s, the development of this theory received a powerful impulse from the ideas and methods of functional analysis that were then brought into the picture. Its modern architecture is due to a constellation of brilliant mathemati­ cians and the scientific collectives that they produced (S.G. Mikhlin, M.G. Krein, B.V. Khvedelidze, 1. Gohberg, LB. Simonenko, A. Devinatz, H. Widom, R.G. Dou­ glas, D. Sarason, A.P. Calderon, S. Prossdorf, B. Silbermann, and others). In the ensuing period, the Fredholm theory of singular integral operators with a finite index was completed in its main aspects in wide classes of Banach and Frechet spaces.

This is the second volume in a series of innovative proceedings entirely devoted to the connections between mathematics and computer science. Here mathematics and computer science are directly confronted and joined to tackle intricate problems in computer science with deep and innovative mathematical approaches.

This volume contains 20 refereed research or review papers presented at the five-day Third Seminar on Stochastic Analysis, Random Fields and Applications which took place at the Centro Stefano Franscini (Monte Verita) in Ascona, Switzerland, from September 20 to 24, 1999.
