The contributions in this volume are dedicated to Vladimir G. Maz'ya and are par­ tially based on talks given at the conference "Functional Analysis, Partial Differ­ ential Equations, and Applications", which took place at the University of Rostock from August 31 to September 4, 1998, to honour Prof. Maz'ya. This conference (a satellite meeting of the ICM) gave an opportunity to many friends and colleagues from all over the world to honour him. This academic community is very large. The scientific field of Prof. Maz'ya is impressively broad, which is reflected in the variety of contributions included in the volumes. Vladimir Maz'ya is the author and co-author of many publications (see the list of publications at the end of this volume), the topics of which extend from functional analysis, function theory and numerical analysis to partial differential equations and their broad applications. Vladimir G. Maz'ya provided significant contributions, among others to the the­ ory of Sobolev spaces, the capacity theory, boundary integral methods, qualitative and asymptotic methods of analysis of linear and nonlinear elliptic differential equations, the Cauchy problem for elliptic and hyperbolic equations, the theory of multipliers in spaces of differentiable functions, maximum principles for elliptic and parabolic systems, and boundary value problems in domains with piecewise smooth boundaries. Surveys on Maz'ya's work in different fields of mathematics and areas, where he made essential contributions, form a major part of the present first volume of The Maz'ya Anniversary Collection.

The book introduces new techniques which imply rigorous lower bounds on the complexity of some number theoretic and cryptographic problems. These functions are considered over the residue ring modulo p and over the residue ring modulo an arbitrary divisor d of p - 1.

To attempt to compile a relatively complete bibliography of the theory of functions of a real variable with the requisite bibliographical data, to enumer­ ate the names of the mathematicians who have studied this subject, exhibit their fundamental results, and also include the most essential biographical data about them, to conduct an inventory of the concepts and methods that have been and continue to be applied in the theory of functions of a real variable ... in short, to carry out anyone of these projects with appropriate completeness would require a separate book involving a corresponding amount of work. For that reason the word essays occurs in the title of the present work, allowing some freedom in the selection of material. In justification of this selection, it is reasonable to try to characterize to some degree the subject to whose history these essays are devoted. The truth of the matter is that this is a hopeless enterprise if one requires such a characterization to be exhaustively complete and concise. No living subject can be given a final definition without provoking some objections, usually serious ones. But if we make no such claims, a characterization is possible; and if the first essay of the present book appears unconvincing to anyone, the reason is the personal fault of the author, and not the objective necessity of the attempt.

The controversy between the wave theory and the emission theory of light early in the nineteenth century has been a subject of numerous studies. At the time of David Hilbert's death in 1943, his leading disciple, Her­ mann Weyl, wrote that " . . . the era of mathematics upon which he impressed the seal of his spirit and which is now sinking below the horizon achieved a more perfect balance than prevailed before and after, between the mastering of concrete problems and the formation of general abstract concepts. "l Weyl attributed this "happy equilibrium" in no small part to Hilbert 's work and its influence, adding that "no mathematician of equal stature has risen from our generation. ,,2 Surely, it would be difficult to exaggerate the importance of Hilbert's contributions to twentieth-century mathematics or even to conceive of what mathematics today would be like without them. He overturned the concep­ tual framework of older fields ranging from invariant theory and algebraic number theory to the foundations of geometry. He rehabilitated the Dirich­ let Principle, propelled integral equation theory to the forefront of active research, derived the field equations governing Einstein's general theory of relativity, created modern proof theory and metamathematics, and through­ out his career he championed the power and efficacy of the axiomatic method not only for mathematics but for all of the exact sciences. Every educated mathematician knows something about Hilbert space, the Hilbert problems, and Hilbert 's formalist program.

It is meant, above all, for physicists who specialize in the field theory and physics of elementary particles and plasma, for mathe maticians dealing with nonlinear differential equations, differential geometry, and algebra, and the theory of Lie algebras and groups and their representa tions, and for students and post-graduates in these fields.

This book collects research papers presented in the First Franco­ Romanian Conference on Optimization, Optimal Control and Partial Differential Equations held at lasi on 7-11 september 1992. The aim and the underlying idea of this conference was to take advantage of the new SOCial developments in East Europe and in particular in Romania to stimulate the scientific contacts and cooperation between French and Romanian mathematicians and teams working in the field of optimization and partial differential equations. Progress in different fields of mechanics, such as filtra­ tion theory, elastic-plastic problems, crystallization pro­ cesses, internal and surface waves, etc., is governed to a great extent by the advances in the study of free boundary problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. Free boundary problems form a scientific area which attracts attention of many specialists in mathematics and mechanics. Increasing interest in the field has given rise to the "International Conferences on Free Boundary Problems and Their Applications" which have convened, since the 1980s, in such countries as England, the United states, Italy, France and Germany. In addition to giving explicit error estimates for partial sums and for interpolating sine polynomials, they also show that Boolean sums yield almost the same asymptotic error estimates as the conventional tensor-product approach, but with a reduced number of terms.
