This book gives a comprehensive review of results for associated sequences and demimartingales developed so far, with special emphasis on demimartingales and related processes. Probabilistic properties of associated sequences, demimartingales and related processes are discussed in the first six chapters. Applications of some of these results to some problems in nonparametric statistical inference for such processes are investigated in the last three chapters.

The true history of physics can only be read in the life stories of those who made its progress possible. Matvei Bronstein was one of those for whom the vast territory of theoretical physics was as familiar as his own home: he worked in cosmology, nuclear physics, gravitation, semiconductors, atmospheric physics, quantum electrodynamics, astro- physics and the relativistic quantum theory. Everyone who knew him was struck by his wide knowledge, far beyond the limits of his trade. This partly explains why his life was closely intertwined with the social, historical and scientific context of his time. One might doubt that during his short life Bronstein could have made truly weighty contributions to science and have become, in a sense, a symbol of his time. Unlike mathematicians and poets, physicists reach the peak of their careers after the age of thirty. His thirty years of life, however, proved enough to secure him a place in the Greater Soviet Encyclopedia. In 1967, in describing the first generation of physicists educated after the 1917 revolution, Igor Tamm referred to Bronstein as "e;an exceptionally brilliant and promising"e; theoretician [268].

<i>This book presents a functional calculus for <i>n</i>-tuples of not necessarily commuting linear operators. In particular, a functional calculus for quaternionic linear operators is developed. These calculi are based on a new theory of hyperholomorphicity for functions with values in a Clifford algebra: the so-called slice monogenic functions which are carefully described in the book. In the case of functions with values in the algebra of quaternions these functions are named slice regular functions.</i><br> <p>Except for the appendix and the introduction all results are new and appear for the first time organized in a monograph. The material has been carefully prepared to be as self-contained as possible. This monograph gives a systematic account of the theory of vector-valued Laplace transforms, ranging from representation theory to Tauberian theorems. In parallel, the theory of linear Cauchy problems and semigroups of operators is developed completely in the spirit of Laplace transforms. Existence and uniqueness, regularity, approximation and above all asymptotic behaviour of solutions are studied. Diverse applications to partial differential equations are given. The book contains an introduction to the Bochner integral and several appendices on background material. It is addressed to students and researchers interested in evolution equations, Laplace and Fourier transforms, and functional analysis. The second edition contains detailed notes on the developments in the last decade. They include, for instance, a new characterization of well-posedness of abstract wave equations in Hilbert space due to M. Crouzeix. Moreover new quantitative results on asymptotic behaviour of Laplace transforms have been added. The references are updated and some errors have been corrected.

Mathematical logic is a branch of mathematics that takes axiom systems and mathematical proofs as its objects of study. This book shows how it can also provide a foundation for the development of information science and technology. The first five chapters systematically present the core topics of classical mathematical logic, including the syntax and models of first-order languages, formal inference systems, computability and representability, and Godel's theorems. The last five chapters present extensions and developments of classical mathematical logic, particularly the concepts of version sequences of formal theories and their limits, the system of revision calculus, proschemes (formal descriptions of proof methods and strategies) and their properties, and the theory of inductive inference. This book contains a collection of research articles and surveys on recent developments on operator theory as well as its applications covered in the IWOTA 2011 conference held at Sevilla University in the summer of 2011.

The book deals with the representation in series form of compact linear operators acting between Banach spaces, and provides an analogue of the classical Hilbert space results of this nature that have their roots in the work of D. Hilbert, F. Riesz and E. Schmidt. The representation involves a recursively obtained sequence of points on the unit sphere of the initial space and a corresponding sequence of positive numbers that correspond to the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the map in the Hilbert space case. The lack of orthogonality is partially compensated by the systematic use of polar sets. There are applications to the p-Laplacian and similar nonlinear partial differential equations. Preliminary material is presented in the first chapter, the main results being established in Chapter 2. The final chapter is devoted to the problems encountered when trying to represent non-compact maps.

The Plancherel formula says that the L^2 norm of the function is equal to the L^2 norm of its Fourier transform. This implies that at least on average, the Fourier transform of an L^2 function decays at infinity. This book is dedicated to the study of the rate of this decay under various assumptions and circumstances, far beyond the original L^2 setting. Analytic and geometric properties of the underlying functions interact in a seamless symbiosis which underlines the wide range influences and applications of the concepts under consideration.

Since the publication of the first edition of this seminar book in 1994, the theory and applications of extremes and rare events have enjoyed an enormous and still increasing interest. The volume originates from the 'Conference on Nonlinear Parabolic Problems' held in celebration of Herbert Amann's 70th birthday at the Banach Center in Bedlewo, Poland.

In the 1680s Isaac Newton wrote the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. At the same time he was also working on a recreation of the plan of Solomon's Temple. In an unpublished manuscript entitled Introduction to the Lexicon of the Prophets, Part two: About the appearance of the Jewish Temple, or more commonly known by its call name Babson MS 0424, he described the architecture of the Temple. His main source for his recreation was the Book of Ezekiel, but he also used and compared it with a wide selection of Jewish, Classical, and contemporary sources, and he demonstrated a good knowledge and understanding of Vitruvius in his search for the truth of Solomon's Temple. The aim of this book is three-fold. First it contains a translation of Babson MS; this is the first translation of this manuscript into English. This manuscript contains two reconstructions of the Temple. Both are working documents that attempt to reconstruct the plan of the Temple using the text of Ezekiel which is supported with a mixture of classical and contemporary sources. The first reconstruction is illustrated. One particular image is of the Temple precinct and it is annotated with letters to match the description in the first reconstruction. This is a well known image and is often reproduced as the plan of Newton's Temple. Although the first description lays out the ground plan it only gives a few details of the uprights and cannot be fully reconstructed. However the second reconstruction is a great deal more detailed in its description and it reveals changes to the first reconstruction in its ground plan - it also gives enough description to be full reconstruction. Second, the book provides a commentary to accompany the translation which puts Babson Ms 0434 into context with Newton's other works on science, chronology, prophecy and theology. Although Babson Ms 0434 is a architecture work, Newton also discusses the Temple and its rituals in many of his unpublished papers in its religious context. He conceived the Principia as the exoteric knowledge of nature while the prophets held the esoteric knowledge of nature. The prophets could only be interpreted through hieroglyphs understood through the framework of the architecture and rituals of Solomon's Temple. The Temple was also important to his works on chronology After his death Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended was published in 1728; this contains a small description of Solomon's Temple of barely 3000 words with detailed three drawings, this detail is not reflected in his description. These topics are discussed in detail. Third, the book contains a reconstruction of Newton's plan of the Temple. The three reconstructions, the two in Babson Ms 0434 and the one in Chronology are discussed and compared. The first reconstruction in Babson Ms 0434 and in Chronology are only ground plans and cannot be reconstructed in a three-dimensional model. However, the second reconstruction is a full description of the ground plan and the uprights. The book creates a reconstruct of Newton's verbal description of the Temple using ArchiCad. This reconstruction brings Newton's plan of the Temple alive. This reconstruction is contained within the sample chapter at the end of this proposal.

In this book the author presents a comprehensive study of Diophantos' monumental work known as Arithmetika, a highly acclaimed and unique set of books within the known Greek mathematical corpus. Its author, Diophantos, is an enigmatic figure of whom we know virtually nothing. Starting with Egyptian, Babylonian and early Greek mathematics the author paints a picture of the sources the Arithmetika may have had. Life in Alexandria, where Diophantos lived, is described and, on the basis of the limited available evidence, his biography is outlined. Of Arithmetika's 13 books only 6 survive in Greek. It was not until 1971 that these were complemented by the discovery of 4 other books in an Arab translation. This allows the author to describe the structure, the contents and the mathematics of the Arithmetika in detail. Furthermore it is shown that Diophantos had a remarkable skill to solve higher degree equations. In the second part, the author draws our attention to the survival of Diophantos' work in both Arab and European mathematical cultures. Once Xylander's critical 1575 edition reached its European public, the fame of the Arithmetika grew. It was studied, translated and modified by such authors as Bombelli, Stevin and Vite. It reached its pinnacle of fame in 1621 with the publication of Bachet's translation into Latin. The marginal notes by Fermat in his copy of Diophantos, including his famous "e;Last Theorem"e;, were the starting point of a whole new research subject: the theory of numbers.

This book systematically studies the asymptotic behavior, in particular "stability" in some sense, for discrete and continuous linear dynamical systems on Banach spaces. Of special concern is convergence to an equilibrium regarding various topologies.

This text is based on lectures Couturat gave at the University Caen. It is an outstanding document of the popularization and propagation of symbolic logic around 1900, and it is the only manuscript mentioned in his correspondence that has been rediscovered.

This book deals with the constructive Weierstrassian approach to the theory of function spaces and various applications. The first chapter is devoted to a detailed study of quarkonial (subatomic) decompositions of functions and distributions on euclidean spaces, domains, manifolds and fractals. This approach combines the advantages of atomic and wavelet representations. It paves the way to sharp inequalities and embeddings in function spaces, spectral theory of fractal elliptic operators, and a regularity theory of some semi-linear equations. The book is self-contained, although some parts may be considered as a continuation of the author's book Fractals and Spectra. It is directed to mathematicians and (theoretical) physicists interested in the topics indicated and, in particular, how they are interrelated. - - - The book under review can be regarded as a continuation of [his book on "e;Fractals and spectra"e;, 1997] (...) There are many sections named: comments, preparations, motivations, discussions and so on. These parts of the book seem to be very interesting and valuable.
