    Hematology, the study of the blood and its disorders, has existed as a science for about one hundred years. During that period it has remained true to its goals. Despite many advances in the submicroscopic and biochemical realm, hematology has clung to its basic postulate that the majority of blood disorders are expressed in morphologically distinct cell changes. Even modern hematology relies largely on the morphologic examination of cells, and the microscope con- tinues to be its main diagnostic tool. Today we may describe hematology as the only morphologically oriented clinical science. It owes its existence chiefly to the development of staining methods which make it possible to assign mor- phologic structures to specific cellular functions and thus to specific pathologic states. The first step in this direction was the brilliant discovery of panoptic stains in the early part of this century by Pappenheim, Wright, and others. This was followed in the 1950s and 1960s by the development of numerous cytochemical procedures for the differentiation of diverse biochemical reactions and cell types. In the last decade, immunologic methods have been employed to identify cell type-specific antigens as a means of classifying lymphoid and other cells more precisely and more objectively. This has aided in the differentia- tion of many important hematologic diseases. In this fourth edition of the Atlas of Clinical Hematology, we have attempted to update the text and bring it in line with recent developments.

    Quantum dots, often denoted artificial atoms, are the exquisite tools by which quantum behavior can be probed on a scale appreciably larger than the atomic scale, that is on the nanometer scale. In this way, the physics of the devices is closer to classical physics than that of atomic physics but they are still sufficiently small to clearly exhibit quantum phenomena. The present volume is devoted to an introduction to some of these fascinating aspects, addressing in particular graduate students and young researchers in the field. In the first lecture by R. Shankar, the general theoretical aspects of Fermi liquids are addressed, in particular the renormalization group approach. This is then aptly applied to large quantum dots. A completely different approach is encountered in the second contribution by J.M. Elzerman et al., in that it is a thorough experimental expose of what can be done or expected in the study of small quantum dots. Here the emphasis lies on the electron spin to be used as a qubit. In the third lecture series by M. Pustilnik and Leonid I. Glazman, mechanisms of low-temperature electronic transport through a quantum dot ¿ weakly coupled to two conducting leads ¿ are reviewed. The fourth series of lectures, by C.W.J. Beenakker, deals with a very interesting aspect of nanophysics: a peculiar property of superconducting mirrors discovered by Andreev about forty years ago and still a challenge to experimental physicists.

The impetus for wri­ ting these volumes was the opportunity to teach the subject matter to both undergraduate and graduate students in engineering at several universities. The approach is distinctly different to that which would adopted should such a course be given to students in pure mathematics; in this sense, the teaching of partial differential equations within an engineering curriculum should be viewed in the broader perspective of "The Modelling of Problems in Engineering" . An engineering student should be given the opportunity to appreciate how the various combination of balance laws, conservation equa­ tions, kinematic constraints, constitutive responses, thermodynamic restric­ tions, etc. , culminates in the development of a partial differential equation, or sets of partial differential equations, with potential for applications to en­ gineering problems. This ability to distill all the diverse information ab out a physical or mechanical process into partial differential equations is a par­ ticular attraction of the subject area.
