"e;Editing a book on editing"e; has a certain "e;tongue in cheek"e; connotation to it, and I must admit that I was not aware what the job truly entailed when the project started. However, over the many months that it took to complete the book, it was interesting to realize that indeed "e;printing-type editing"e; and "e;biological editing"e; have many matching characteristics. Therefore, the quote by the well-known ? lm editor Verna Fields (1918-1982), "e;I wish the word "e;editing"e; had never been invented, "e;editing"e; implies correcting, and it's not"e;, can function as a motto for the book: the various biological phenomena that are controlled by the different editing reactions are by far more complex than a simple correction process, and it is astounding how multifaceted the ? eld has become. All chapters of the book focus, as a general "e;editorial"e; subtext, on the corre- tion between RNA structure and function, and on complexity. This involves diff- ent length scales: from complex molecular machineries, to the interplay of complex biochemical pathways, and to evolutionary processes. The chapters are organized in a sequence beginning with a status quo account of RNA editing reactions from the focused perspective of RNA structure. This is followed by a chapter on the structure/function correlation in tRNA editing, and a chapter on RNA editing by adenosine deaminases that act on RNA (ADARs).

The main goal of this book is to present the methods used to calculate the most important parameters for ropes, and to explain how they are applied on the basis of numerous sample calculations. The book, based on the most important chapters of the German book DRAHTSEILE, has been updated to reflect the latest developments, with the new edition especially focusing on computational methods for wire ropes. Many new calculations and examples have also been added to facilitate the dimensioning and calculation of mechanical characteristics of wire ropes.This book offers a valuable resource for all those working with wire ropes, including construction engineers, operators and supervisors of machines and installations involving wire ropes.

Understanding cooperative phenomena far from equilibrium is one of the fascinating challenges of present-day many-body physics. Glassy behaviour and the physical ageing process of such materials are paradigmatic examples. The present volume, primarily intended as introduction and reference, collects six extensive lectures addressing selected experimental and theoretical issues in the field of glassy systems.

Model reduction and coarse-graining are important in many areas of science and engineering. How does a system with many degrees of freedom become one with fewer? The cell cycle is tightly regulated on many different levels to ensure properly controlled proliferation. Deregulation of cell cycle regulation is a hallmark of cancer. It serves researchers in academia and industry as an excellent and lasting reference and source of inspiration.

When no samples are available to estimate a probability distribution, we have to invite some domain experts to evaluate the belief degree that each event will happen. Perhaps some people think that the belief degree should be modeled by subjective probability or fuzzy set theory. However, it is usually inappropriate because both of them may lead to counterintuitive results in this case.In order to rationally deal with belief degrees, uncertainty theory was founded in 2007 and subsequently studied by many researchers. Nowadays, uncertainty theory has become a branch of axiomatic mathematics for modeling belief degrees.This is an introductory textbook on uncertainty theory, uncertain programming, uncertain statistics, uncertain risk analysis, uncertain reliability analysis, uncertain set, uncertain logic, uncertain inference, uncertain process, uncertain calculus, and uncertain differential equation. "e;Paleomicrobiology - Past Human Infections"e; features the methods and main achievements in this emerging field of research at the intersection of microbiology and evolution, history and anthropology. New molecular approaches have already provided exciting results, such as confirmation of a single biotype of Yersinia pestis as the causative agent of historical plague pandemics, and the closer proximity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from ancient skeletons to modern strains than to Mycobacterium bovis, shedding new light on the evolution of major human pathogens and pathogen-population relationships. Firm microbiological diagnoses also provide historians and anthropologists with new data on which to base evaluation of past epidemics.

¿Anything happens must have its own reason ¿. Although I cannot really recall exactly when I heard of this statement for the first time, it is always in my mind and in fact it has been one of the motivations for me to carry out research and study. When I asked myself again about the purpose of writing this book at the time of writing this preface, several ¿add on¿ rea sons that had never occurred to me at the start of writing this book in the spring of 2003 surprisingly came up. Back then, when I was preparing the progress report for the iJADE (2. 0) project, a ¿fuzzy¿ idea of whether it was feasible to write a book on intelli gent agents came to my mind. This book not only would discuss and deal with the theory but also the ¿spin off¿ applications from the iJADE pro ject, including: the iJADE WeatherMan, the iJADE Stock Advisor, the iJADE Surveillant and the latest works on iJADE Negotiator. The fact that I had to launch the iJADE development kit officially over the Web in the summer of 2003 (http://www. ijadk. org) and to arrange courses and semi nars to teach and train our undergraduate students to make use of this tool kit further supported the idea and the future use of this book. Hence, the ¿archetype¿ of this book emerged.

Evolutionary design of intelligent systems is gaining much popularity due to its capabilities in handling several real world problems involving optimization, complexity, noisy and non-stationary environment, imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness. This edited volume 'Engineering Evolutionary Intelligent Systems' deals with the theoretical and methodological aspects, as well as various evolutionary algorithm applications to many real world problems originating from science, technology, business or commerce. This volume comprises of 15 chapters including an introductory chapter which covers the fundamental definitions and outlines some important research challenges. Chapters were selected on the basis of fundamental ideas/concepts rather than the thoroughness of techniques deployed.
