ICARIS 2006 is the ?fth instance of a series of conferences dedicated to the comprehension and the exploitation of immunological principles through their translation into computational terms. All scienti?c disciplines carrying a name that begins with "e;arti?cial"e; (followed by "e;life,"e; "e;reality,"e; "e;intelligence"e; or "e;- munesystem"e;) aresimilarlysu?ering froma veryambiguousidentity.Their axis of research tries to stabilize an on-going identity somewhere in the crossroad of engineering (building useful artifacts), natural sciences (biologyor psychology- improving the comprehension and prediction of natural phenomena) and t- oretical computer sciences (developing and mastering the algorithmic world). Accordingly and depending on which of these perspectives receives more s- port, they attempt at attracting di?erent kinds of scientists and at stimul- ing di?erent kinds of scienti?c attitudes. For many years and in the previous ICARIS conferences, it was clearly the "e;engineering"e; perspective that was the most represented and prevailed through the publications. Indeed, since the o- gin of engineering and technology, nature has o?ered a reserve of inexhaustible inspirations which have stimulated the development of useful artifacts for man. Biology has led to the development of new computer tools, such as genetic - gorithms, Boolean and neural networks, robots learning by experience, cellular machines and others that create a new vision of IT for the engineer: parallel, ?exible andautonomous.Inthis type of informatics,complexproblemsareta- led with the aid of simple mechanisms, but in?nitely iterated in time and space.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems, IWSOS 2006. The book offers 16 revised full papers and 6 revised short papers together with 2 invited talks and 3 poster papers. The papers are organized in topical sections on dynamics of structured and unstructured overlays, self-organization in peer-to-peer networks, self-organization in wireless environments, self-organization in distributed and grid computing, self-managing and autonomic computing, and more.

The field of bioinformatics has two main objectives: the creation and maintenance of biological databases, and the discovery of knowledge from life sciences data in order to unravel the mysteries of biological function, leading to new drugs and therapies for human disease. Life sciences data come in the form of biological sequences, structures, pathways, or literature. One major aspect of discovering biological knowledge is to search, predict, or model specific patterns of a given dataset, which have some relevance to an important biological phenomenon or another dataset. To date, many pattern recognition algorithms have been applied or catered to address a wide range of bioinformatics problems. The 2006 Workshop of Bioinformatics in Pattern Recognition (PRIB 2006) marks the beginning of a series of workshops that is aimed at gathering researchers applying pattern recognition algorithms in an attempt to resolve problems in computational biology and bioinformatics. This volume presents the proceedings of Workshop PRIB 2006 held in Hong Kong, China, on August 20, 2006. It includes 19 technical contributions that were selected by the Program Committee from 43 submissions. We give a brief introduction to pattern recognition in bioinformatics in the first paper. The rest of the volume consists of three parts. Part 1: signal and motif detection, and gene selection. Part 2: models of DNA, RNA, and protein structures. Part 3: biological databases and imaging.

Modern software systems are becoming more complex in many ways and are having to cope with a growing number of abnormal situations which, in turn, are increasingly complex to handle. Exception handling is an essential part of software and system architectures and a crucial element in the tool-set that enables the building of resilient, robust and safe software systems. Two ECOOP workshops on exception handling were held in 2003 and 2005. This book is primarily an outcome of these two events - several workshop participants as well as a number of other leading researchers in the field were invited to contribute a chapter each.This book is composed of five parts; the first four deal with topics related to exception handling in the context of programming languages, concurrency and operating systems, pervasive computing systems, and requirements and specifications. The last part focuses on case studies, experimentation and qualitative comparisons. The 16 coherently written chapters by leading researchers competently address a wide range of issues in exception handling.

III. Latin American School of Mathematics

The 5th International Conference on Adhoc, Mobile and Wireless Networks (Adhoc-Now 2006) was held during August 17-19, 2006, in Ottawa, Canada. The ?rst four conferences in this series were held in Toronto (2002), Montreal (2003), Vancouver (2004) and Cancun (2005), respectively. The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for researchers from academia/industry and practitioners to meet and exchange ideas regarding recent developments in the areas of ad hoc wireless networks. We received more than 170 papers for the conference submitted by authors from the following 25 countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Norway,Poland, Spain, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Turkey, UK, USA and Venezuela. Each paper was assignedto three members of the Technical Program Committee (TPC). Since each TPC member was responsible for generating - views for six to nine papers, we encouraged TPC members to delegate some reviews to other quali?ed reviewers. The names of all the TPC members and the additional reviewers appear elsewhere in this volume. Based on the reviews, we decided to accept 25 submissions as regular papers and 10 as short papers. Regular papers were given 25 minutes for presentation while short papers were given 15 minutes. All of the accepted papers appear in this volume. We are indebted to the TPC and the other reviewers for their detailed and timely reviews which enabled us to put together an excellent technical program.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing, SAT 2006. The book presents 26 revised full papers together with 11 revised short papers and 2 invited talks. Coverage extends to all current research issues in propositional and quantified Boolean formula satisfiability testing. The papers are organized in topical sections on proofs and cores, heuristics and algorithms, and more.
