    von Christos G. Athanassiou
    185,00 €

This book aims to assess, evaluate and critically analyze the methods that are currently available for a judicious pest management in durable food. It presents and analyzes a vast amount of methods that are already in use in "e;real world"e; industrial applications. After the phase-out of methyl bromide, but also the withdrawal of several insecticides and the continuously updated food safety regulations, there is a significant knowledge gap on the use of risk-reduced, ecologically-compatible control methods that can be used with success against stored-product insect species and related arthropods. The importance of integrated pest management (IPM) is growing, but the concept as practiced for stored products might differ from IPM as historically developed for field crops. This book discusses a wide variety of control strategies used for stored product management and describes some of the IPM components. The editors included chemical and non-chemical methods, as both are essential in IPM. They set the scene for more information regarding emerging issues in stored product protection, such as emerging, alien and invasive species as threats for global food security, as well as the importance of stored-product arthropods for human health. Finally, the analysis of the economics of stored product protection is presented, from theory to practice.

The Turkish Artificial Intelligence and Neural Network Symposium (TAINN) is an annual meeting where scientists present their new ideas and algorithms on artificial intelligence and neural networks with either oral or poster presentation. The TAINN- Turkish Conference on AI and NN Series started in 1992 at Bilkent University in Ankara, envisioned by various researchers in AI and NN then at the Bilkent, Middle East Technical, Bo azici and Ege universities as a forum for local researchers to get together and communicate. Since then, TAINN has been held annually around early summer. This year the 14th TAINN conference was organized by the EE and CE departments of the zmir Institute of Technology with an emphasis on international contributions. Among the 75 papers, 41 were accepted for oral presentation and 12 for poster presen-tation. In addition to the presentations, invited lectures were given by Burhan Turk en (Knowledge/Intelligence Systems Laboratory, University of Toronto) and Joerg Siekmann (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI, Saarland University), providing us with new developments in the field. We are very grateful to the contributions of such pioneer scientists.

The aim of this book is twofold: to provide an introduction for newcomers to state of the art computer simulation techniques in space plasma physics and an overview of current developments. Computer simulation has reached a stage where it can be a highly useful tool for guiding theory and for making predictions of space plasma phenomena, ranging from microscopic to global scales. The various articles are arranged, as much as possible, according to the - derlying simulation technique, starting with the technique that makes the least number of assumptions: a fully kinetic approach which solves the coupled set of Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic ?eld and the equations of motion for a very large number of charged particles (electrons and ions) in this ?eld. Clearly, this is also the computationally most demanding model. Therefore, even with present day high performance computers, it is the most restrictive in terms of the space and time domain and the range of particle parameters that can be covered by the simulation experiments. It still makes sense, therefore, to also use models, which due to their simp- fying assumptions, seem less realistic, although the e?ect of these assumptions on the outcome of the simulation experiments needs to be carefully assessed.

The 20 revised full papers presented in this book together with 4 section surveys were carefully reviewed and selected from the papers contributed to the 14th International Conference on Applications of Prolog, INAP 2001, held in Tokyo, Japan, in October 2002.The papers are devoted to the four tightly interwoven aspects knowledge acquisition, knowledge management, knowledge processing, and knowledge distribution, all in the context of the World Wide Web; they are organized in topical sections on Web languages and logic, knowlege acquisition and knowledge representation, decision support by advanced logic programming, and Web-knowledge management and data mining. The book is targeted to designers and users of e-business systems and e-government systems, for IT professionals who build such systems, as well as for the wider audience interested in the technical background of knowledge processing for the Web.

The Twelfth International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming was held in Sydney, Australia, July 9-11, 2002. The conference was colocated with two other events, the Nineteenth International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML2002) and the Fifteenth Annual Conference on Computational Learning Theory (COLT2002). Startedin1991,InductiveLogicProgrammingistheleadingannualforumfor researchers working in Inductive Logic Programming and Relational Learning. Continuing a series of international conferences devoted to Inductive Logic Programming and Relational Learning, ILP 2002 was the central event in 2002 for researchers interested in learning relational knowledge from examples. The Program Committee, following a resolution of the Community Me- ing in Strasbourg in September 2001, took upon itself the issue of the possible change of the name of the conference. Following an extended e-mail discussion, a number of proposed names were subjected to a vote. In the ?rst stage of the vote, two names were retained for the second vote. The two names were: Ind- tive Logic Programming, and Relational Learning. It had been decided that a 60% vote would be needed to change the name; the result of the vote was 57% in favor of the name Relational Learning. Consequently, the name Inductive Logic Programming was kept.
