TheAsiaInformationRetrievalSymposium(AIRS)wasestablishedbytheAsian information retrieval community after the successful series of Information - trieval with Asian Languages (IRAL) workshops held in six di?erent locations in Asia, starting from 1996. While the IRAL workshops had their focus on inf- mation retrieval problems involving Asian languages, AIRS covers a wider scope of applications, systems, technologies and theory aspects of information retrieval in text, audio, image, video and multimedia data. This extension of the scope re?ects and fosters increasing research activities in information retrieval in this region and the growing need for collaborations across subdisciplines. We are very pleased to report that we saw a sharp increase in the number of submissions and their quality, compared to the IRAL workshops. We received 106papersfromninecountriesinAsiaandNorthAmerica,fromwhich28papers (26%) were presented in oral sessions and 38 papers in poster sessions (36%). It was a great challenge for the Program Committee to select the best among the excellent papers. The low acceptance rates witness the success of this year's conference. After a long discussion between the AIRS 2004 Steering Committee and Springer, the publisher agreed to publish our proceedings in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series, which is SCI-indexed. We feel that this strongly attests to the excellent quality of the papers.

FIDJI 2004 was an international forum for researchers and practitioners int- estedinthe advancesin,andapplicationsof,softwareengineeringfordistributed application development. Concerning the technologies, the workshop focused on "e;Java-related"e; technologies. It was an opportunity to present and observe the latest research, results, and ideas in these areas. Allpaperssubmittedtothisworkshopwerereviewedbyatleasttwomembers of the International Program Committee. Acceptance was based primarily on originality and contribution. We selected, for these post-workshop proceedings, 11 papers amongst 22 submitted, a tutorial and two keynotes. FIDJI2004aimedatpromotingascienti?capproachtosoftwareengineering. The scope of the workshop included the following topics: - design of distributed applications - development methodologies for software and system engineering - UML-based development methodologies - development of reliable and secure distributed systems - component-based development methodologies - dependability support during system life cycle - fault tolerance re?nement, evolution and decomposition - atomicity and exception handling in system development - software architectures, frameworks and design patterns for developing d- tributed systems - integration of formal techniques in the development process - formal analysis and grounding of modelling notation and techniques (e. g. , UML, metamodelling) - supporting the security and dependability requirements of distributed app- cations in the development process - distributed software inspection - refactoring methods - industrial and academic case studies - development and analysis tools The organization of such a workshop represents an important amount of work.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Brazilian Symposium on Bioinformatics, BSB 2005, held in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil in July 2005.The 15 revised full papers and 10 revised extended abstracts presented together with 3 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 55 submissions. The papers address a broad range of current topics in computational biology and bioinformatics.

VECPAR is a series of international conferences dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of high-performance computing for computational science, as an industrial technique and academic discipline, extending the fr- tier of both the state of the art and the state of practice. The audience for and participants in VECPAR are seen as researchers in academic departments, g- ernment laboratories and industrial organizations. There is now a permanent website for the series, http://vecpar.fe.up.pt, where the history of the conf- ences is described. ThesixtheditionofVECPARwasthe?rsttimetheconferencewascelebrated outside Porto - at the Universitad Politecnica de Valencia (Spain), June 28-30, 2004. The whole conference programme consisted of 6 invited talks, 61 papers and26posters,outof130contributionsthatwereinitiallysubmitted.Themajor themes were divided into large-scale numerical and non-numerical simulations, parallel and grid computing, biosciences, numerical algorithms, data mining and visualization. This postconference book includes the best 48 papers and 5 invited talks presented during the three days of the conference. The book is organized into 6 chapters, with a prominent position reserved for the invited talks and the Best Student Paper. As a whole it appeals to a wide research community, from those involved in the engineering applications to those interested in the actual details of the hardware or software implementations, in line with what, in these days, tends to be considered as computational science and engineering (CSE).

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the Second International Workshop on Semantic Web and Databases, SWDB 2004, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2004 as a satellite workshop of VLDB 2004.The 14 revised full papers presented together with 2 papers by the invited keynote speakers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 47 submissions. Among the topics addressed are data semantics, semantic Web services, service-oriented computing, workflow composition, XML semantics, relational tables, ontologies, semantic Web algebra, heterogeneous data sources, context mediation, OWL, ontology engineering, data integration, semantic Web queries, database queries, and peer-to-peer warehouses.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing promises to o?er exciting new possibilities in d- tributed information processing and database technologies. The realization of this promise lies fundamentally in the availability of enhanced services such as structured ways for classifying and registering shared information, veri?cation and certi?cation of information, content-distributed schemes and quality of c- tent, security features, information discovery and accessibility, interoperation and composition of active information services, and ?nally market-based me- anisms to allow cooperative and non-cooperative information exchanges. The P2P paradigm lends itself to constructing large-scale complex, adaptive, - tonomous and heterogeneous database and information systems, endowed with clearly speci?ed and di?erential capabilities to negotiate, bargain, coordinate, and self-organize the information exchanges in large-scale networks. This vision will have a radical impact on the structure of complex organizations (business, scienti?c, or otherwise) and on the emergence and the formation of social c- munities, and on how the information is organized and processed. The P2P information paradigm naturally encompasses static and wireless connectivity, and static and mobile architectures. Wireless connectivity c- bined with the increasingly small and powerful mobile devices and sensors pose new challenges to as well as opportunities for the database community. Inf- mation becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and accessible anywhere and at any time over highly dynamic, unstable networks with very severe constraints on the information management and processing capabilities.

This book contains the Proceedings of the 5th Workshop on OpenMP Appli- tionsandTools(WOMPAT2004),whichtookplaceattheUniversityofHouston, Houston, Texas on May 17 and 18, 2004. Previous workshops in this series took place in Toronto, Canada, Fairbanks, Alaska, Purdue, Indiana, and San Diego, California.Thepurposeoftheworkshopwastobringtogetherusersanddevel- ers of the OpenMP API for shared memory parallel programming to disseminate their ideas and experiences and discuss the latest developments in OpenMP and its application. To support this aim, the program comprised a mixture of invited talks from research and industry, experience reports, and submitted papers, the last of which are presented in this volume. A tutorial introduction to OpenMP was held at the same location on May 18 by Ruud van der Pas from Sun Microsystems. Further, a two-day lab session called OMPlab was held immediately following the workshop and the tutorial on May 19 and 20, and was attended by both novice and advanced users. Many of the hardware vendors and several researchers gave in-depth tutorials on their softwareandmadetheirsystemsavailabletobothnoviceandadvancedattendees during OMPlab. Contributors to the WOMPAT 2004 OMPlab included IBM, Intel, Sun, the University of Tennessee, NASA, the University of Greenwich, Cornell University, the University of Oregon and the University of Houston. The Internet has now become an integral part of everyday life for hundreds of millions of people around the world. The uses of the Internet have augmented commerce, communication, education, governance, entertainment, health care, etc. E-mail has become an indispensable part of life; the Web has become an indispensable source of information on just about everything; people now use governmentWebsitestoreceiveinstructionsandinformation,and?lepaperwork with the government; many major online businesses have been created, such as Amazon, eBay, Google, Travelocity, eTrade, etc. However, the uses of the Internet have also had serious negative e?ects, - cluding spam, the spreading of viruses and worms, spyware, phishing, hacking, online fraud, invasions of privacy, etc. Viruses and worms often bring down tens of millions of computers around the world; many people get duped into furni- ing their personal identi?cations, and bank and insurance account information, etc. ; hackers break into government and corporation computers to steal cri- cal data; unsubstantiated rumors about individuals or organizations spread like wild?re on the Internet, etc. Further, the uses of the Internet are creating new paradigms in areas such as copyright, governance, etc. The widespread use of peer-to-peer ?le sharing systems, started by Napster,is forcing a reassessment of the value of holding copyright on digital media. Internet postings by vocal citizens to the Web sites of the news media, governmento?ces, and elected g- ernment o?cials are impacting government policies and swaying the opinions of other citizens. The UML 2004 conference was held in Lisbon (Portugal) from October 11 through October 15, 2004. It was the seventh conference in a series of annual events that started in 1998. UML has rapidly become one of the leading venues to present and discuss the development of object-oriented modeling. In order to re?ect the changes in the ?eld, the UML conference series will be continued from 2005 onwards under the name MODELS (Model Driven En- neering, Languages and Systems). Inane?orttomakethisyear'sconferencemoreusefulande?ectiveforawider community, including academics and practitioners working in areas related to UML and modeling in general, a set of satellite events was organized, including workshopsdedicatedtospeci?cresearchtopics,anindustrytrack,aposter/demo session, and a tools exhibit. This volume is a compilation of the contributions presented at these satellite events. Workshops at UML 2004 took place during the ?rst three days of the conference(fromOctober10to12). Followingthetraditionofprevious UML conferences, UML 2004workshopsprovidedacollaborativeforumforgroups of (typically 15 to 30) participants to exchange recent or preliminary results, to conduct intensive discussions on a particular topic, or to coordinate e?orts between representatives of a technical community. Ten workshops were held, covering a variety of hot topics, which have been covered in the workshop - ports contained in this volume. Each workshop lasted for a full day. A novelty with respect to previous UML conferences was the inclusion of a Doctoral Symposium, which was well received, to provide an explicit space for young - searchers developing their thesis on some aspect related to UML.

The 30 revised full papers were carefully selected for inclusion in the book and are presented along with an educators's and a doctorial symposium section comprising additional 13 short articles. The papers are organized in topical sections representing the various workshops

The 32nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP 2005) was held in Lisbon, Portugal from July 11 to July 15, 2005. These proceedings contain all contributed papers presented at ICALP 2005, - getherwiththepapersbytheinvitedspeakersGiuseppeCastagna(ENS),Leonid Libkin (Toronto), John C. Mitchell (Stanford), Burkhard Monien (Paderborn), and Leslie Valiant (Harvard). The program had an additional invited lecture by Adi Shamir (Weizmann Institute) which does not appear in these proceedings. ICALP is a series of annual conferences of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS). The ?rst ICALP took place in 1972. This year, the ICALP program consisted of the established track A (focusing on algorithms, automata, complexity and games) and track B (focusing on logic, semantics and theory of programming), and innovated on the structure of its traditional scienti?c program with the inauguration of a new track C (focusing on security and cryptography foundation). In response to a call for papers, the Program Committee received 407 s- missions, 258 for track A, 75 for track B and 74 for track C. This is the highest number of submitted papers in the history of the ICALP conferences. The P- gram Committees selected 113 papers for inclusion in the scienti?c program. In particular, the Program Committee for track A selected 65 papers, the P- gram Committee for track B selected 24 papers, and the Program Committee for track C selected 24 papers. All the work of the Program Committees was done electronically.

The 8th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satis?ability Testing(SAT2005)providedaninternationalforumforthemostrecentresearch on the satis?ablity problem (SAT). SAT is the classic problem of determining whether or not a propositional formula has a satisfying truth assignment. It was the ?rst problem shown by Cook to be NP-complete. Despite its seemingly specialized nature, satis?ability testing has proved to extremely useful in a wide range of di?erent disciplines, both from a practical as well as from a theoretical point of view. For example, work on SAT continues to provide insight into various fundamental problems in computation, and SAT solving technology has advanced to the point where it has become the most e?ective way of solving a number of practical problems. The SAT series of conferences are multidisciplinary conferences intended to bring together researchers from various disciplines who are interested in SAT. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: proof systems and proof c- plexity; search algorithms and heuristics; analysis of algorithms; theories beyond the propositional; hard instances and random formulae; problem encodings; - dustrial applications; solvers and other tools. This volume contains the papers accepted for presentation at SAT 2005. The conference attracted a record number of 73 submissions. Of these, 26 papers were accepted for presentation in the technical programme. In addition, 16 - pers were accepted as shorter papers and were presented as posters during the technicalprogramme.Theacceptedpapersandposterpaperscoverthefullrange of topics listed in the call for papers.

The British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD) was established in 1980 as a forum for research into the theory and practice of databases. The original conference in the series took place at the University of Aberdeen. To be precise, this conference was in fact entitled ICOD which stood for International Conference on Databases. It was the intention, when the series began, that an ICOD would take place every two years, whilst a BNCOD would run in the years in between. As the record shows ICOD was only held in 1980 and 1983. The more junior conference has managed to acquire a lifetime much longer than that of its senior relative! If truth wereknown,however,BNCOD has,overthe years,growninto ICOD and although the conference is still titled "e;British National,"e; it is, in fact, an international conference that takes place on a yearly basis. Proof of this can be obtained simply by looking at the table of contents of these proceeding which clearlyshowthatthe majorityofpaperspresentedatthis year'sconferencecame from contributors whose a?liations are outside the UK. Despitetherangeofpapersono?er,BNCODstillretainsitsuniquelyBritish ?avor. The Programme Committee is drawn from UK academics and the c- ference is always held at a British university (or in earlier years a polytechnic!).

The book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems, DCOSS 2005, held in Marina del Rey, California, USA in June/July 2005.The 26 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 85 submissions; also included are the abstracts of 3 invited talks, 2 short papers, 9 invited poster abstracts, and 10 contributed abstracts.The papers address all current aspects of distributed computing issues in large-scale networked sensor systems, including systematic design techniques and tools, algorithms, and applications.

Started on the inspired initiative of Prof. Alfred Strohmeier back in 1996, and spawned from the annual Ada-Europe conference that had previously run for 16 consecutive years, the International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies celebrated this year its tenth anniversary by going to York, UK, where the ?rst series of technical meetings on Ada were held in the 1970s. Besides being a beautiful and historical place in itself, York also hosts the Depa- ment of Computer Science of the local university, whose Real-Time Group has been tremendously in?uential in shaping the Ada language and in the progress on real-time computing worldwide. This year's conference was therefore put together under exc- lent auspices, in a very important year for the Ada community in view of the forthc- ing completion of the revision process that is upgrading the language standard to face the challenges of the new millennium. The conference took place on June 20-24, 2005. It was as usual sponsored by Ada-Europe, the European federation of national Ada societies, in cooperation with ACM SIGAda. The conference was organized by selected staff of the University of York teamed up with collaborators from various places in Europe, in what turned out to be a very effective instance of distributed collaborative processing. The conference also enjoyed the generous support of 11 industrial sponsors.
