As software systems become ubiquitous, the issues of dependability become more and more crucial. Given that solutions to these issues must be considered from the very beginning of the design process, it is reasonable that dependability is addressed at the architectural level. This book was born of an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures and dependability. This state-of-the-art survey contains expanded and peer-reviewed papers based on the carefully selected contributions to two workshops: the Workshop on Architecting Dependable Systems (WADS 2007), organized at the 2007 International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2007), held in Edinburgh, UK in June 2007 and the Third Workshop on the Role of Software Architecture for Testing and Analysis (ROSATEA 2007) organized as part of a federated conference on Component-Based Software Engineering and Software Architecture (CompArch 2007), held in Medford, MA, USA in July 2007. It also contains a number of invited papers written by recognized experts in the area. The 14 papers are organized in topical sections on critical infrastructures, rigorous design/fault tolerance, and verification and validation.

Information technology has now pervaded the legal sector, and the very modern concepts of e-law and e-justice show that automation processes are ubiquitous. European policies on transparency and information society, in particular, require the use of technology and its steady improvement. Some of the revised papers presented in this book originate from a workshop held at the European University Institute of Florence, Italy, in December 2006. The workshop was devoted to the discussion of the different ways of understanding and explaining contemporary law, for the purpose of building computable models of it -- especially models enabling the development of computer applications for the legal domain. During the course of the following year, several new contributions, provided by a number of ongoing (or recently finished) European projects on computation and law, were received, discussed and reviewed to complete the survey. This book presents 20 thoroughly refereed revised papers on the hot topics under research in different EU projects: legislative XML, legal ontologies, semantic web, search and meta-search engines, web services, system architecture, dialectic systems, dialogue games, multi-agent systems (MAS), legal argumentation, legal reasoning, e-justice, and online dispute resolution. The papers are organized in topical sections on knowledge representation, ontologies and XML legislative drafting; knowledge representation, legal ontologies and information retrieval; argumentation and legal reasoning; normative and multi-agent systems; and online dispute resolution.

The Grid computing concept, which allows users to integrate administratively and g- graphically dispersed computing resources, has been gaining traction in a number of application areas during the past few years. By interconnecting many - heterogeneous, though usually virtualized - computing resources, virtual computer centers or superc- puters can be created, providing a seamless supply of computing resources. Grid comp- ing provides benefits not only for scientific computing (e.g., SETI@home, which interconnects one million computers across 226 countries with a total processing power of 711 TFLOPS) but also in a commercial environment. It is projected that computing Grids can lower the total IT costs of businesses by 30%. The report "e;Grid Computing: A Vertical Market Perspective 2005-2010"e; (by The Insight Research Corporation) estimates an increase of worldwide Grid spending from $714.9 million in 2005 to approximately $19.2 billion in 2010. One of the most prominent activities in academia is the EGEE project being funded with 30 MEuro by the European Commission. EGEE brings together researchers from over 27 countries with the common aim of developing a service Grid infrastructure, which is suited for scientific computing with very high demand for processing power.

    50,00 €

This year, we received about 170 submissions to ICWL 2008. There were a total of 52 full papers, representing an acceptance rate of about 30%, plus one invited paper accepted for inclusion in this LNCS proceedings. The authors of these accepted papers came from many different countries. We would like to thank all the reviewers for spending their precious time reviewing the papers and for providing valuable c- ments that aided significantly in the paper selection process. Authors of the best papers presented in this conference will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for possible publication in a special issue of IEEE Internet Computing. This was the second time that the ICWL conference was organized in China. It was particularly special this year to hold ICWL 2008 in China, as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games were co-located in the same country during the conference period. We would like to especially thank our Organization Co-chair, Lanfang Miao, for spending an enormous amount of effort in coordinating the local arrangements. In fact, we would like to thank the entire conference Organizing Committee for their hard work in putting together the conference. In particular, we would like to express our appreciation to our Registration Chairs, Jiying (Jean) Wang and Lanfang Miao, and Treasurer Howard Leung for their tremendous efforts in communicating with the authors regarding registration matters and maintaining the registration lists up-to-date.

  • - Second International Conference, GSN 2006, Boston, MA, USA, October 1-3, 2006, Revised Selected and Invited Papers
    von Silvia Nittel
    52,00 €

This volume serves as the post-conference proceedings for the Second GeoSensor Networks Conference that was held in Boston, Massachusetts in October 2006. The conference addressed issues related to the collection, management, processing, ana- sis, and delivery of real-time geospatial data using distributed geosensor networks. This represents an evolution of the traditional static and centralized geocomputational paradigm, to support the collection of both temporally and spatially high-resolution, up-to-date data over a broad geographic area, and to use sensor networks as actuators in geographic space. Sensors in these environments can be static or mobile, and can be used to passively collect information about the environment or, eventually, to actively influence it. The research challenges behind this novel paradigm extend the frontiers of tra- tional GIS research further into computer science, addressing issues like data stream processing, mobile computing, location-based services, temporal-spatial queries over geosensor networks, adaptable middleware, sensor data integration and mining, au- mated updating of geospatial databases, VR modeling, and computer vision. In order to address these topics, the GSN 2006 conference brought together leading experts in these fields, and provided a three-day forum to present papers and exchange ideas.

  • - International Conference on Software Process, ICSP 2008 Leipzig, Germany, May 10-11, 2008, Proceedings
    von Qing Wang
    69,00 €

This volume contains papers presented at the International Conference on Software Process (ICSP 2008) held in Leipzig, Germany, during May 10-11, 2008. ICSP 2008 was the second conference of the ICSP series. The theme of ICSP 2008 was "e;Making Globally Distributed Software Development a Success Story. "e; Software developers work in a dynamic context of frequently changing technologies and with limited resources. Globally distributed development teams are under ev- increasing pressure to deliver their products more quickly and with higher levels of qu- ity. At the same time, global competition is forcing software development organizations to cut costs by rationalizing processes, outsourcing part of or all development activities, reusing existing software in new or modified applications, and evolving existing systems to meet new needs, while still minimizing the risk of projects failing to deliver. To address these difficulties, new and modified processes are emerging, including agile methods and plan-based product line development. Open Source, COTS, and com- nity-developed software are becoming more and more popular. Outsourcing coupled with 24/7 development demands well-defined processes to support the coordination of organizationally-and geographically-separated teams. The accepted papers present completed research or advanced work-in-progress in all areas of software and systems development process including: agile software pr- esses, CMMI, novel techniques for software process representation and analysis; process tools and metrics; and the simulation and modeling of software processes. Contributions reflecting real-world experience, or derived directly from industrial or open-source software development and evolution, were particularly welcome.

Parallelanddistributedprocessing, althoughwithinthefocusofcomputerscience researchforalongtime, isgainingmoreandmoreimportanceinawidespectrum of applications. These proceedings aim to demonstrate the use of parallel and distributed processing concepts in di?erent application ?elds, and attempt to spark interest in novel research directions to advance the embracing model of high-performance computing research in general. The objective of these workshops is to speci?cally address researchers c- ing from university, industry and governmental research organizations and application-oriented companies, in order to close the gap between purely s- enti?c research and the applicability of the research ideas to real-life problems. Euro-Par is an annual series of international conferences dedicated to the promotionandadvancementofallaspectsofparallelanddistributedcomputing. The 2007 event was the 13th issue of the conference. Euro-Par has for a long time been eager to attract colocated events sharing the same goal of promoting the development of parallel and distributed computing, both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. Since 2006, Euro-Par o?ers researchersthe chance to colocate advanced technical workshops back-to-back with the main conference. This is for a mutual bene?t: the workshops can take advantage of all technical and social facilities which are set up for the conference, so that the organizational tasks are kept to a minimal level; the conference can rely on workshopstoexperimentwithspeci?careasofresearchwhicharenotyetmature enough, or too speci?c, to lead to an o?cial, full-?edged topic at the conference.

    von Max H. Garzon
    55,00 €

Biomolecular/DNA computing is now well established as an interdisciplinary field where chemistry, computer science, molecular biology, physics, and mathematics come together with the common purpose of fundamental scientific understanding of biology and chemistry and its applications. This international meeting has been the premier forum where scientists with different backgrounds and a common focus meet to present their latest results and entertain visions of the future. In this tradition, about 100 participants converged in Memphis, Tennessee to hold the 13th International Meeting on DNA Computing during June 4-8, 2007, under the auspices of the International Society for Nanoscale Science, Computation and Engineering (ISNSCE) and The University of Memphis. The call for papers encouraged submissions of original, recent, and promising experimental and theoretical results in the field. The Call for Papers elicited some 62 submissions, almost perfectly balanced among the major theoretical and experimental categories. It is evidence of how well the interdisciplinary nature of the conference has truly matured that the major criterion of quality, agreed upon in advance by the Program Committee (PC), produced a nearly balanced program as well across the two major categories, full papers and talks with an abstract only. The program with the greatest perceived impact consisted of 24 papers for plenary oral talks; in addition, 15 full-paper posters and 10 poster abstracts were accepted, of which 5 authors were invited to give five short demos in a new submission category this year. The conference program retained the structure now customary for this meeting.

The advent of the Internet has opened up a wealth of applications, but also given rise to a host of new problems. Many of those problems have led to - citing new research directions in mathematics and theoretical computer science, especially in the areas of combinatorics and algorithms. The Fourth Workshop on Combinatorial and Algorithmic Aspects of Networking (CAAN 2007) was organized to be a place where the latest research developments on all aspects of networking could be presented. The topics covered were diverse, with talks on strategies for searching in networks, for cleaning networks of unwanted - truders, on di?erent routing strategies, and on scheduling and load balancing. The workshop started with an invited lecture by Peter Winkler of Dartmouth College, who gave a general talk on a topic related to probability, a concept central to network modeling and managing. The afternoon opened with a short invited talk by Alejandro Lop ' ez-Ortiz, who gave an overview of various issues in designing resilient backbone networks. CAAN 2007 took place on August 14, 2007, at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, co-located with the Workshop on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS 2007). Three previous CAAN workshops were held in Chester, UK (CAAN 2006), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada (CAAN 2005), and in Ban?, Alberta, Canada (CAAN 2004), respectively.
