Celebrating Five Years of Early Aspects The early aspects community had its origins in the "e;Early Aspects: Requirements En- neering and Architecture Design"e; workshop organized during the first international c- ference on Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD), in March 2002. Since then, the early aspects community has grown rapidly. At the time this project started, the Early Aspects Steering Committee (www. early-aspects. net) had organized nine editions of the Early Aspects workshop in conferences such as AOSD OOPSLA, ICSE and SPLC and edited two special issues in international journals. Workshop attendance has exceeded 200, and from these more than 60% were different individuals. This number corresponds to just over 20 participants per workshop, despite the fact that participation was allowed only to authors of accepted papers or invited researchers. However, the early aspects community is much larger than that. A considerable n- ber of papers have been published regularly in journals, books and conferences where the early aspects workshop has not yet been organized. The number and range of subm- sions to the workshop series have demonstrated that the field has a solid base of conti- ous research being done by established groups around the world. The early-aspects community is now self-sustaining and continuously expanding. Therefore, we felt that the fifth anniversary of the first early aspects workshop was an appropriate juncture to upgrade the autonomous standing of the community by providing it with its own formal publication.

The 3rd Asian Internet Engineering Conference (AINTEC) followed the ?rst two successful editions held in Bangkok, Thailand, and focused on developing synergies between researchers in Asia and worldwide, but was also a unique chanceforyoung,talentedregionalscientiststomeetandinteract.AINTEC2007 wasthereforeamajoropportunityforpresentationsanddiscussionsaroundthese objectives. In particular, it aimed at addressing issues pertinent to the Asian region with vast diversities of socio-economic and networking conditions while inviting high-quality and recent research results from the global international research community to be presented. The conference is single-track to favor discussions among a diverse set of participants. We want to thank the authors of the 66 papers submitted for considering AINTEC as the right target for their paper. The submissions came from 18 countries with, as expected, a majority from Asia. The program was composed of 14 accepted papers organized in 6 technical sessions including 7 invited talks by leading experts on innovative topics, presentations of papers, demos, posters and a pre-conference18th Asian School on Computer Science (November, 25-26 2007). You might think that AINTEC is yet another conference but it has di?erent objectives and spirit, it o?ers a great opportunity to discuss future challenges for a sustainable Internet, and to get to know the local and regional researchers and enjoy the great hospitality of Thailand.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the ACM/IFIP/USENIX 8th International Middleware Conference 2007, held in Newport Beach, CA, USA, in November 2007. The 22 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 108 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on component-based middleware, mobile and ubiquitous computing, grid and cluster computing, enhancing communication, resource management, reliability and fault tolerance.

The 26th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling in Auckland, New Zealand, hosted six workshops which allowed participants to focus their p- sentations and discussions on advanced topics that cannot easily ?t the general conference scope. Thirteen good quality proposals were received and nine were selected. Due to the similarity of their scope, two pairs were suggested to merge, leading to seven proposals. One workshop attracted fewer submissions than expected, so that its selected papers were integrated into the conference. Finally, six wo- shopswerekept.Interestingly,fourofthem(FP-UML,ONISW,QoIS,SeCoGIS) were a sequel of workshops that were held in the last few years, while two were new (CMLSA, RIGiM), exhibiting both the maturity and the innovation of the workshops. Following the call for papers, we received 114 complete submissions, from which 40 quality papers wereselected, giving an acceptance rate of 35% (a fairly standard score for workshops). The following six workshops were organized: - ConceptualModellingforLifeSciencesApplications (CMLSA2007),chaired by Yi-Ping Phoebe Chen and Sven Hartmann. This workshopaddressed the speci?c challenges posed by the large data volumes, the complexity and the data and software heterogeneity involved by life science applications. - Foundations and Practices of UML (FP-UML 2007), chaired by Juan Trujillo and Je?rey Parsons. The third edition of this workshop gathered researchers and practitioners on topics related to data warehouses, security, model transformation, state diagrams development and model quality.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Database Programming Languages (DBPL 2007), held in Vienna, Austria, on September 23-24, 2007. DBPL 2007 was one of 15 meetings co-located with VLDB (the International Conference on Very Large Data Bases). DBPLcontinues to presentthe verybest workat the intersectionof database and programming language research. The proceedings include a paper based on the invited talk by Wenfei Fan and the 16 contributed papers that were selected by the programcommittee from 41 submissions. Every submission was reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. In addition, the program committee sought the opinions of additional referees, selected because of their expertise on particular topics. The ?nal selection of papers was made during the last week of July. We would like to thank all of the authors who submitted papers to the c- ference, and the members of the program committee for their excellent work. The program committee did not meet in person, but carried out extensive d- cussions during the electronic PC meeting. We are grateful to Andrei Voronkov for his EasyChair system that made it so easy to manage these discussions. Finally, we would also like to thank Christoph Koch and Gavin Bierman for their assistance and sound counsel, and the organizers of VLDB 2007 for taking care of the local organization of DBPL.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Trends in Enterprise Application Architecture, TEAA 2006. It identifies issues in enterprise application architecture and proposes as well as evaluates a solution. Topics of interest include model driven architecture, enterprise development environments, service oriented architecture, data integration, enterprise grid computing, load balancing, and enterprise component platforms.

On behalf of the IEEE Communications Society, the Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM), the Manweek 2007 Organizing Committee, and the members of the IPOM Technical Program Committee, it is our pleasure to present the proceedings of the Seventh IEEE Workshop on IP Operations and Management (IPOM2007), held as part of Manweek 2007 during October 31-November 2, 2007. With the widespread deployment of IP-based networks, their operations and management have become increasingly important in terms of understanding emerging technical and scientific problems; lessons from such understanding are particularly important for future Internet design and management. Like the previous IPOM workshops, IPOM 2007 was co-located with several related events as part of the 3rd International Week on Management of Networks and Services (Manweek 2007). The other events were the 10th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia and Mobile Networks and Services (MMNS 2007), the 18th IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Distributed Systems: Operations and Management (DSOM 2007), the 2ndIEEE International Workshop on Modeling Autonomic Communications Environments (MACE 2007), and the 1st IEEE/IFIP International Workshop on End-to-End Virtualization and Grid Management (EVGM 2007). Co-locating those events provided the opportunity for an exchange of ideas between research communities that work on related topics, allowing participants to forge links and exploit synergies.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms, ESA 2007, held in Eilat, Israel, in October 2007 in the context of the combined conference ALGO 2007.The 63 revised full papers presented together with abstracts of three invited lectures address all current subjects in algorithmics reaching from design and analysis issues of algorithms over to real-world applications and engineering of algorithms in various fields.

High-accuracy Doppler shift measurements and high-precision spectroscopy are primary techniques in the search for exo-planets.Further extremely interesting applications include the analysis of QSO absorption lines to determine the variability of physical constants and the analysis of the isotopic ratios of absorption lines both in stars and in QSOs, and the determination of stellar oscillations through radial velocity measurements. Since the use of high-precision/resolution spectroscopy is closely connected to the ability to collect a large number of photons, the scientific domains using this technique benefit tremendously from the use of 8-meter class telescopes and will fully exploit the tremendous gain provided by future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). IR high-resolution spectroscopy should soon approach the same accuracy regime achieved in the optical range.This volume comprehensively covers the astrophysical and technical aspects of high-precision spectroscopy with an outlook to future developments, and represents a useful reference work for researchers in those fields.

Thousands of mini computers (comparable to a stick of chewing gum in size), equipped with sensors,are deployed in some terrain or other. After activation thesensorsformaself-organizednetworkandprovidedata,forexampleabout a forthcoming earthquake. The trend towards wireless communication increasingly a?ects electronic devices in almost every sphere of life. Conventional wireless networks rely on infrastructure such as base stations; mobile devices interact with these base stations in a client/server fashion. In contrast, current research is focusing on networks that are completely unstructured, but are nevertheless able to communicate (via several hops) with each other, despite the low coverage of their antennas. Such systems are called sensor orad hoc networks, depending on the point of view and the application. Wireless ad hoc and sensor networks have gained an incredible research momentum.Computerscientistsandengineersofall?avorsareembracingthe area. Sensor networks have been adopted by researchers in many ?elds: from hardware technology to operating systems, from antenna design to databases, from information theory to networking, from graph theory to computational geometry.

Contributions submitted to the journal and dealing with semantics of data will be considered even if they are not from the topics in the list. While the physical appearance of the journal issues is like the books from the we- known Springer LNCS series, the mode of operation is that of a journal. Contributions can be freely submitted by authors and are reviewed by the Editorial Board. Contributions may also be invited, and nevertheless carefully reviewed, as in the case for issues that contain extended versions of best papers from major conferences addressing data semantics issues. Special issues, focusing on a specific topic, are coordinated by guest editors once the proposal for a special issue is accepted by the Editorial Board. Finally, it is also possible that a journal issue be devoted to a single text.

The two premier annual European conferences in the areas of machine learning and data mining have been collocated ever since the ?rst joint conference in Freiburg, 2001. The European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) traces its origins to 1986, when the ?rst European Working Session on Learning was held in Orsay, France. The European Conference on Principles and Practice of KnowledgeDiscoveryinDatabases(PKDD) was?rstheldin1997inTrondheim, Norway. Over the years, the ECML/PKDD series has evolved into one of the largest and most selective international conferences in machine learning and data mining. In 2007, the seventh collocated ECML/PKDD took place during September 17-21 on the centralcampus of WarsawUniversityand in the nearby Staszic Palace of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The conference for the third time used a hierarchical reviewing process. We nominated 30 Area Chairs, each of them responsible for one sub-?eld or several closely related research topics. Suitable areas were selected on the basis of the submission statistics for ECML/PKDD 2006 and for last year's International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2006) to ensure a proper load balance amongtheAreaChairs.AjointProgramCommittee(PC)wasnominatedforthe two conferences, consisting of some 300 renowned researchers, mostly proposed by the Area Chairs. This joint PC, the largest of the series to date, allowed us to exploit synergies and deal competently with topic overlaps between ECML and PKDD. ECML/PKDD 2007 received 592 abstract submissions. As in previous years, toassistthereviewersandtheAreaChairsintheir?nalrecommendationauthors had the opportunity to communicate their feedback after the reviewing phase.

The World Wide Web is a rich source of information about human behavior. It containslarge amount of data organizedvia interconnected Web pages,traces of information search, user feedback on items of interest, etc. In addition to large data volumes, one of the important characteristics of the Web is its dynamics, where content,structure and usagearechanging over time. This showsup in the rise of related research areas like communities of practice, knowledge mana- ment, Web communities, and peer-to-peer. In particular the notion of colla- rative work and thus the need of its systematic analysis become more and more important. For instance, to develop e?ective Web applications, it is essential to analyze patterns hidden in the usage of Web resources, their contents and their interconnections. Machine learning and data mining methods have been used extensively to ?nd patterns in usage of the network by exploiting both contents and link structures. The International Conference on Life System Modeling and Simulation (LSMS) was formed to bring together international researchers and practitioners in the field of life system modeling and simulation as well as life system-inspired theory and methodology. The concept of a life system is quite broad. It covers both micro and macro c- ponents ranging from cells, tissues and organs across to organisms and ecologic niches. These interact and evolve to produce an overall complex system whose beh- ior is difficult to comprehend and predict. The arrival of the 21st century has been marked by a resurgence of research interest both in arriving at a systems-level und- standing of biology and in applying such knowledge in complex real-world appli- tions. Consequently, computational methods and intelligence in systems, biology, as well as bio-inspired computational intelligence, have emerged as key drivers for new computational methods. For this reason papers dealing with theory, techniques and real-world applications relating to these two themes were especially solicited. Building on the success of a previous workshop in 2004, the 2007 International Conference on Life System Modeling and Simulation (LSMS 2007) was held in Shanghai, China, September 14-17, 2007. The conference was jointly organized by The Shanghai University, Queen's University Belfast together with The Life System Modeling and Simulation Special Interest Committee of the Chinese Association for System Simulation.

This book constitutes the refereed joint proceedings of seven international workshops held in conjunction with the 5th International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Applications, ISPA 2007, held in Niagara Falls, Canada in August 2007. The 53 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from many high quality submissions. The workshops contribute to enlarging the spectrum of the more general topics treated in the ISPA 2007 main conference.

"e;Reviews of Plasma Physics Volume 24"e;, edited by V.D. Shafranov, presents two reviews from the cutting-edge of Russian plasma physics research. The first review by V.A. Rozhansky devoted to the mechanisms of transverse conductivity and generation of self-consistent electric fields in strongly ionized magnetized plasma. The second review by O.G. Bakunin considers numerous aspects of turbulent transport in plasma and fluids. This review is focused on scaling arguments for describing anomalous diffusion in the presence of complex structures. These topics are especially important for fusion plasma research, plasma astrophysics, discharge physics, and turbulence.

Welcome to the proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Network- Based Information Systems (NBiS-2007), in conjunction with the 18th Inter- tional Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications DEXA-2007, which was held in Regensburg, Germany, September 3-4, 2007. The main objective of NBiS-2007 was to bring together scientists, engineers, and researchers from both network systems and information systems with the aimofencouragingtheexchangeofideas,opinions,andexperiencebetweenthese two communities. NBiS started as a workshop and for 9 years it was held together with DEXA International Conference and is the oldest among DEXA Workshops. The wo- shop has been very successful in quantity and quality. We received many paper submissions every year, but as a workshop we could accept only a limited n- ber of papers. This was the ?rst year that NBiS was run as an international conference together with DEXA. We received 122 research papers from all over the world. The submitted papers were carefully reviewed by at least two reviewers. Based on the review results, the Program Committee members selected 55 high-quality papers to be presented during the NBiS-2007 conference.
