The following listing represents a survey and a short description of 'Earth Observing Mis- sions' in alphabetical order. The listing in Part A considers completed-, operational-as well as planned missions on an international scale (Earth observations from space know no na- tional boundaries). A look into past activities is important for reasons of heritage, context and of perspective. The document is intended for all who want to keep track of missions and sensors in the fast -growing field of Earth observations. There cannot be any claim to com- pleteness, although a considerable effort was made to collect and integrate all known mis- sions and sensors into this book. Earth observation by remote sensing changes our view and perception of the world. We be- gin to realize the global character of remote sensing, its multidimensional and complemen- tary nature, its vast potential to many disciplines, its importance to mankind as a whole. Re- mote sensing permits for the first time in history a total system view of the Earth. The view from space toward Earth has brought about sweeping revisions in the Earth sciences, in par- ticular in such fields as meteorology, oceanology, hydrology, geology, geography, forestry, agriculture, geodynamics, solar-terrestrial interactions, and many others.

Since the first edition more than 10 years ago many new information material about tropical diseases have been collected. New technologies were established (e.g. hybridization techniques, flow cytometry, image analysis, telepathology, serologic analysis etc.). The continuous and rapid improvement of tourism in all countries of the world and the increasing emigration of peoples of the developing countries to the old continents have changed the classical image of tropical diseases which are seen with greater frequency in temporative and highly developed countries. For these reasons new concepts were necessary for the second edition of the pathology of tropical diseases. The 27 chapters are written by well reputed experts in these fields.

Enzymes are applied in organic synthesis and in analytical chemistry, in industrial production processes of pharmaceuticals and in food processing. Finding a suitable enzyme for a desired transformation or with a de- fined specificity is not always an easy task. More than 3000 enzymes are well described to date. The Enzyme Handbook provides all the information for selecting the proper enzyme to perform defined transformations in a given environment. The Enzyme Handbook devotes a variable number of pages for each enzyme, depending on the amount of information available with the EC number as ordering criterion within a volume. Revised data sheets can be released for individual enzymes and newly characterized enzymes and they can easily be sorted into the binders at the appropriate place. Each data sheet is divided into 7 sections: - Nomenclature (EC number, Systematic name, Recom- mended name, Synonyms, CAS Reg. No.) - Reaction and specificity (Catalysed reaction, Reaction type, Natural substrates, Substrate spectrum, Product spectrum, Inhibitors, Cofactors/prosthetic groups, Metal compounds/salts, Turnover number, Specific activity, KM-value, pH-optimum, pH-range, Tem- perature optimum, Temperature range) - Enzyme structure (Molecular weight, Subunits, Glyco-/Lipoprotein) - Isolation/Preparation (Source organism, Source tissue, Localisation in source, Purification, Crystallization, Cloned, Renatured) - Stability (pH, Temperature, Oxidation, Organic sol- vent, General stability information, Storage) - Cross-References (to Structure Data Banks) - Literature references
