Many plants produce enzymes collectively known as ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs). RIPs catalyze the removal of an adenine residue from a conserved loop in the large ribosomal RNA. The adenine residue removed by this depurination is crucial for the binding of elongation factors. Ribosomes modified in this way are no longer able to carry out protein synthesis. Most RIPs exist as single polypeptides (Type 1 RIPs) which are largely non-toxic to mammalian cells because they are unable to enter them and thus cannot reach their ribosomal substrate. In some instances, however, the RIP forms part of a heterodimer where its partner polypeptide is a lectin (Type 2 RIPs). These heterodimeric RIPs are able to bind to and enter mammalian cells. Their ability to reach and modify ribosomes in target cells means these proteins are some of the most potently cytotoxic poisons found in nature, and are widely assumed to play a protective role as part of the host plant's defenses. RIPs are able to further damage target cells by inducing apoptosis. In addition, certain plants produce lectins lacking an RIP component but which are also cytotoxic. This book focuses on the structure/function and some potential applications of these toxic plant proteins.

The 2010 International Conference on Web Information Systems and Mining (WISM 2010) was held October 23-24, 2010 in Sanya, China. WISM 2010 received 603 submissions from 20 countries and regions. After rigorous reviews, 54 hi- quality papers were selected for publication in the WISM 2010 proceedings. The acceptance rate was 9%. The aim of WISM 2010 was to bring together researchers working in many different areas of Web information systems and Web mining to foster the exchange of new ideas and promote international collaboration. In addition to the large number of submitted papers and invited sessions, there were several internationally well-known keynote speakers. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we thank Hainan Province Institute of Computer and Qiongzhou University for its sponsorship and logistics support. We also thank the members of the Organizing Committee and the Program Committee for their hard work. We are very grateful to the keynote speakers, invited session organizers, session chairs, reviewers, and student helpers. Last but not least, we thank all the authors and participants for their great contributions that made this conference possible. October 2010 Fu Lee Wang Gong Zhiguo Xiangfeng Luo Jingsheng Lei

  • - 11th International Conference, FC 2007, and First International Workshop on Usable Security, USEC 2007, Scarborough, Trinidad/Tobago, February 12-16, 2007. Revised Selected Papers
    von Sven Dietrich
    49,00 - 69,00 €

The 11th International Conference on Financial Cryptography and Data Security (FC 2007, http://fc07. ifca. ai), organized by the International Financial Crypt- raphy Association (IFCA, http://www. ifca. ai/), was held in Tobago, February 12-15, 2007. The conference is a well-established and premier international - rum for research, advanced development, education, exploration, and debate - garding security in the context of ?nance and commerce. We continue to cover all aspects of securing transactions and systems, which this year included a range of technical areas such as cryptography, payment systems, anonymity, privacy, - thentication, and commercial and ?nancial transactions. For the ?rst time, there was an adjacent workshop on Usable Security, held after FC 2007 in the same - cation. The papers are included in the last part of this volume. The conference goal was to bring together top cryptographers, data-security specialists, and c- puter scientists with economists, bankers, implementers, and policy makers. The goal was met this year: there were 85 submissions, out of which 17 research papers and 1 system presentation paper were accepted. In addition, the conference featured two distinguished speakers, Mike Bond and Dawn Jutla, and two panel sessions, one on RFID and one on virtual economies. As always, there was the rump session on Tuesday evening, colorful as usual.

  • - JSAI-isAI 2012 Workshops, LENLS, JURISIN, MiMI, Miyazaki, Japan, November 30 and December 1, 2012, Revised Selected Papers
    von Yoichi Motomura
    45,00 - 49,00 €

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the JSAI-isAI 2012 Workshops LENLS, JURISIN, ALSIP, MiMI, which tool place on November/December 2012, respectively, in Miyazaki, Japan. The 17 contributions in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 42 submissions. They are an excellent selection of papers that are representative of topics of AI research both in Japan an in other parts of the world. LENLS (Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics) is an annual international workshop on formal semantics and pragmatics; its topics are the formal and theoretical aspects of natural language. JURISIN (Juris-Informatics) deals with juris-informatics. This workshop brings together people from various backgrounds such as law, social science, information and intelligent technology, logic and philosophy, including the conventional "e;AI and law"e; area. MiMI (Multimodality in Multispace Interaction) focuses on how multispace is managed in socially, temporally, and sequentially complex environments.
