Extending the nth order DD scheme to double electron-electron resonance (DEER) experiments require the addition of multiple pump pulses for = 1. Incomplete excitation of pump spin packets introduce signal artefacts which are minimized by pump pulse optimization including linear-chirp and asymmetric hyperbolic secant pulses. Prolonging the dipolar evolution time with decreased signal artefact allows to extent the measurable interspin distances in biomolecules which were otherwise not accessible due to spin echo relaxation.

Miriam Schader shows that migrants can use religion as a resource for political involvement in their (new) country of residence - but under certain circumstances only. The author analyses the role religious networks and symbols play for the politicization and participation of Muslim and Christian migrants from sub-Saharan Africa in Berlin and Paris. Against the widely held belief that Islam is a 'political religion' in itself, this study demonstrates that Christian migrants draw on their religion for political action more easily than their Muslim counterparts. Eva Bernauer predicts civil conflicts based upon the political exclusion of identity groups and their transnational links to external governments. The innovation lies in a simultaneous consideration of three identities - ethnicity, religion, and class-based ideology - thus extending previous studies with merely an ethnic focus. Most importantly, such a perspective implies a shift towards a society's unique three-dimensional identity setup, upon which the excluded population and their transnational links can be determined. The author presents original data on the three-dimensional identity setup for 57 countries and introduces a formal model where rebel leaders strategically use identities to garner the support of the population. Key quantities of interest, such as the largest excluded subgroup or the number of identity links to external governments, are tested in several quantitative analyses as predictors for the onset of civil conflicts. The author shows that there is an added value of extending the mere ethnic perspective to also encompass religion and class-based ideology.  

Sarah Lange examines the effectiveness of cascade training, which constitutes a cost-effective training model in teacher training. In development cooperation countries, teaching quality is expected to improve with teacher professional development; for this purpose, she explores the effectiveness of training multipliers in schools in Cameroon. This research question is analysed with a design, which encompasses a questionnaire survey provided to teachers, students and principals as well as a teacher video survey and a student achievement test. The empirical results show the effects of cascade training on the learner-oriented teaching practice, if the trained teachers are supported in their role as change agents. Among the conditions for the conceptual quality and the implementation of cascade training, the continuity of school-based professional development is particularly emphasized in light of the results.

Andreas Barmann develops novel approaches for the solution of network design problems as they arise in various contexts of applied optimization. At the example of an optimal expansion of the German railway network until 2030, the author derives a tailor-made decomposition technique for multi-period network design problems. Next, he develops a general framework for the solution of network design problems via aggregation of the underlying graph structure. This approach is shown to save much computation time as compared to standard techniques. Finally, the author devises a modelling framework for the approximation of the robust counterpart under ellipsoidal uncertainty, an often-studied case in the literature. Each of these three approaches opens up a fascinating branch of research which promises a better theoretical understanding of the problem and an increasing range of solvable application settings at the same time.

This book investigates knowledge interactions in China's foreign enterprises. It reveals that cultural differences strongly account for knowledge-related obstacles, namely knowledge leakage and insufficient knowledge sharing. Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, widespread cultural arguments such as Confucianism or collectivism hardly apply to Chinese employees' handling of knowledge. In fact, more subtle cultural logics are relevant in daily work, which are connected to the perceived stability of the enterprise itself. But these usually go unnoticed. Thus, rather than being distracted by a national "e;Chinese culture"e;, managers can take real action to solve knowledge conflicts in their particular enterprise.

This thesis presents a scalable, generic methodology for microbial phenotype prediction based on supervised machine learning, several models for biological and ecological traits of high relevance, and the deployment in metagenomic datasets. The results suggest that the presented prediction tool can be used to automatically annotate phenotypes in near-complete microbial genome sequences, as generated in large numbers in current metagenomic studies. Unraveling relationships between a living organism's genetic information and its observable traits is a central biological problem. Phenotype prediction facilitated by machine learning techniques will be a major step forward to creating biological knowledge from big data.

Barbara Gornicka presents a sociological investigation - both historical and contemporary - into the problems surrounding naked bodies. She draws on her own participation in a nudist swimming club and goes on to study the often very complex and paradoxical emotions that have been associated with nakedness in the Western world for centuries. The book provides answers not only to why we find exposing our naked bodies shameful, but also why we find it sexual and erotic in the first place. It looks beneath taboos surrounding nakedness today and offers a theoretical explanation for their development over time. On the basis of her historical analysis, the author demonstrates that it was not until the late nineteenth or twentieth century that we began to see nudity as erotic.

Ruth Achenbach develops a model of individual return migration decision making, which examines both the process and the decisive factors in return migration decision making of Chinese highly skilled workers and students in Japan. She proposes to answer a question yet insufficiently explained by migration research: why do migrants deviate from their migration intentions and return sooner or later than planned, or not at all? Her study integrates factors from the spheres of career, family and lifestyle, and redefines stages in long-term decision-making processes, thereby contributing to decision and migration theory. She analyzes migrants' shifting priorities over the course of migration, including a perspective on life course and on the impact of the triple catastrophe of March 11, 2011.

Thomas Hubauer addresses the challenge of providing reasonable interpretations of incomplete observational data in the context of imperfect domain models - a situation often encountered in the context of industrial diagnostics. To tackle this problem, the author proposes a novel approach called Relaxed Abduction, which is able to derive pragmatic interpretations in situations where existing methods either fail or provide overly complex solutions. Matthias Wurlpresents two essential steps to implement offline PET monitoring of proton dosedelivery at a clinical facility, namely the setting up of an accurate MonteCarlo model of the clinical beamline and the experimental validation ofpositron emitter production cross-sections. In the first part, the field sizedependence of the dose output is described for scanned proton beams. Both theMonte Carlo and an analytical computational beam model were able to accuratelypredict target dose, while the latter tends to overestimate dose in normaltissue. In the second part, the author presents PET measurements of differentphantom materials, which were activated by the proton beam. The resultsindicate that for an irradiation with a high number of protons for the sake ofgood statistics, dead time losses of the PET scanner may become important andlead to an underestimation of positron-emitter production yields.

Manuel Kroiss examines the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells using machine learning methods. This work is based on experiments focusing on the lineage choice of CMPs, the progenitors of HSCs, which either become MEP or GMP cells. The author presents a novel approach to distinguish MEP from GMP cells using machine learning on morphology features extracted from bright field images. He tests the performance of different models and focuses on Recurrent Neural Networks with the latest advances from the field of deep learning. Two different improvements to recurrent networks were tested: Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) cells that are able to remember information over long periods of time, and dropout regularization to prevent overfitting. With his method, Manuel Kroiss considerably outperforms standard machine learning methods without time information like Random Forests and Support Vector Machines.
