Anitta M. Hipper examines to what extent and under what conditions the EU's transformative power met with resistance in Romania. The book touches upon a raw nerve for most post-communist societies: justice and anti-corruption reform. Through the use of a context-sensitive approach, it assesses how domestic factors influenced the implementation of EU conditionality towards Romania from 1990 to 2012. Empirical investigations reveal a struggle between various interested parties in complying with EU conditionality. As a result, a complex layer of (non-)compliance emerged and it became a Herculean task to ensure the sustainability of reform by reformist forces within Romania and the EU.

Martin Bergaus investigated Service Delivery Platforms (SDP), focussing on their challenges and design aspects from a user's perspective. Qualitatively he incorporated user experience in SDP research, developing a Grounded Theory (GT) then set out parameters needed when developing SDP investigations from a user viewpoint, before technical implementation. This study indicates usability factors for future SDP systems and contributes to the exploratory framework represented by the six GT categories. The results of this study benefit Information Systems (IS) experts developing SDP based ICT systems and those interested in practical applications of GT.

The research focus of Rahamatullah Khondoker is on Future Internet Architectures, Network Security, Software-Defined Networking, and Network Function Virtualization. In his PhD thesis, the author tackles challenges of today's layered network architecture (such as TCP/IP protocol stack) which is inflexible. He proposes that the evolution of the network can be achieved by first, decoupling applications from the networks and second, selecting the best network or protocol automatically based on the applications' requirements. With the provided language, applications are able to express their requirements, and networks expose their capabilities such that the most appropriate network and protocol are selected automatically. 

Michael Nofer examines whether and to what extent Social Media can be used to predict stock returns. Market-relevant information is available on various platforms on the Internet, which largely consist of user generated content. For instance, emotions can be extracted in order to identify the investors' risk appetite and in turn the willingness to invest in stocks. Discussion forums also provide an opportunity to identify opinions on certain companies. Taking Social Media platforms as examples, the author examines the forecasting quality of user generated content on the Internet.

The objective of Kai Zhang and his research is to assess the existing process monitoring and fault detection (PM-FD) methods. His aim is to provide suggestions and guidance for choosing appropriate PM-FD methods, because the performance assessment study for PM-FD methods has become an area of interest in both academics and industry. The author first compares basic FD statistics, and then assesses different PM-FD methods to monitor the key performance indicators of static processes, steady-state dynamic processes and general dynamic processes including transient states. He validates the theoretical developments using both benchmark and real industrial processes.

Dr.-Ing. Hao Luo demonstrates the developments of advanced plug-and-play (PnP) process monitoring and control systems for industrial automation processes. With aid of the so-called Youla parameterization, a novel PnP process monitoring and control architecture (PnP-PMCA) with modularized components is proposed. To validate the developments, a case study on an industrial rolling mill benchmark is performed, and the real-time implementation on a laboratory brushless DC motor is presented.

Philipp Meisen introduces a model, a query language, and a similarity measure enabling users to analyze time interval data. The introduced tools are combined to design and realize an information system. The presented system is capable of performing analytical tasks (avoiding any type of summarizability problems), providing insights, and visualizing results processing millions of intervals within milliseconds using an intuitive SQL-based query language. The heart of the solution is based on several bitmap-based indexes, which enable the system to handle huge amounts of time interval data. 

Holger A. Kastler untersucht Rechtsschutzdefizite im transnationalen Polizei- und Sicherheitsrecht sowie die wechselseitige Beeinflussung von staatlichem Recht, Europarecht und Volkerrecht. Der Autor entwickelt das Modell einer Foderation von mehrfach verbundenen Staaten, die zwar rechtlich selbstandig bleiben, aber nicht nur an die Grundrechte, sondern auch an die Menschenrechte der Verfassung der Foderation sowie weitere, regionale und internationale Verpflichtungen gebunden sind. Die im Buch gewahlte foderale Perspektive ermoglicht eine Verbesserung des individuellen Daten- und Rechtsschutzes, verdeutlicht aber auch strukturelle Grenzen foderaler Verbindungen. Die nationale Implementierung international gewahrter Rechte wird daher als wesentliche Aufgabe angesehen.

Alexander Buhmann develops a new model for measuring the constitution and effects of country images by combining well-established concepts from national identity theory and attitude theory with a recent model from reputation management. The model is operationalized and tested in two surveys. Results show how different cognitive and affective dimensions of the country image affect each other and ultimately lead to the facilitation of behavioral intentions. The book introduces a theory-grounded approach to clarify the dimensionality of the country image. It is the first to operationalize and test the dimensions of the country image by combining formative and reflective measures in a mixed-specified model.

Gregor Wiedemann evaluates text mining applications for social science studies with respect to conceptual integration of consciously selected methods, systematic optimization of algorithms and workflows, and methodological reflections relating to empirical research. In an exemplary study, he introduces workflows to analyze a corpus of around 600,000 newspaper articles on the subject of "e;democratic demarcation"e; in Germany. He provides a valuable resource for innovative measures to social scientists and computer scientists in the field of applied natural language processing. 

Florian Brauner addresses the risk reduction effects of security measures (SecMe) as well as economic and social effects using terrorist threats in public transportation as use case. SecMe increase the level of security but cause interferences and restrictions for customers (e.g. privacy). This study identifies the interferences and analyzes the acceptance with an empirical survey of customers. A composite indicator for the acceptance of different SecMe is developed and integrated into a risk management framework for multi-criteria decision analysis achieving the right balance of risk reduction, costs, and social acceptance.

Attila Jaeger develops an application which notifies a vehicle's driver of upcoming road weather dangers. This application maps the information evaluated by in-vehicle sensors in order to draw conclusions on the current weather condition. Comprehensive data basis is gained by sharing information with other vehicles using Car-to-X communication. In order to prove usability of the presented approaches, the developed application and selected concepts are implemented and deployed within the context of large scale Car-to-X field operational trials simTD and DRIVE C2X. Car-to-X communication is considered as the next major step towards a significant increase in road safety and traffic efficiency.

Almut Braun carried out forensic phonetic speaker identification experiments (voice lineups) with 306 lay listeners. Blind listeners significantly outperformed sighted listeners when the speech recordings were presented in studio quality. For recordings in mobile phone quality or of whispering voices, blind and sighted listeners achieved similar results. The data can be used as reference material for real cases with blind earwitnesses. Furthermore, it is discussed whether blind individuals are particularly suitable to work as forensic audio analysts for law enforcement agencies.

Arbeit und Produktion sind im 21. Jahrhundert immer starker grenzuberschreitend vernetzt. Dies galt aber bisher nicht in gleichem Mae fur die Regulierung der Arbeits-, Beschaftigungs- und Partizipationsbedingungen der erwerbstatigen Menschen. Der globalisierte Kapitalismus' agiert zwar grenzberschreitend, aber nicht ungebndigt.

Andreas Bihlmaier describes a novel method to model dynamic spatial relations by machine learning techniques. The method is applied to the task of representing the tacit knowledge of a trained camera assistant in minimally-invasive surgery. The model is then used for intraoperative control of a robot that autonomously positions the endoscope. Furthermore, a modular robotics platform is described, which forms the basis for this knowledge-based assistance system. Promising results from a complex phantom study are presented.

Silvia Castellazzi shows how companies can implement their corporate responsibility and support employability and access to training in an incentive-compatible manner. The study provides insights into unrealized cooperation and disincentives which prevent companies from investing in a shared pool of employable and skilled people. The research draws on the theoretical framework of the economic ethics and on in-depth interviews with key stakeholders in two European countries. Findings show that incentives for investments in training are selective and might reinforce path-dependencies and exclusion, while not supporting cooperation and productive competition. The study also shows the value of conceptualizing employability as a social rather than a psychological contract to facilitate investments and the implementation of corporate responsibility. 

In this thesis accurate predictions for the spectroscopic parameters of l-C3H+ and C4 are made from state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. Both molecules are of interest to interstellar cloud chemistry and only scarce experimental information about their rovibrational properties is available. Christopher J. Stefanie Walter examines the visibility of European Union citizens in the mass mediated European public sphere and argues that it can help facilitate an exchange between decision-makers and ordinary citizens. The results show that in comparison to other actor groups, such as political parties or civil society organisations, the visibility of European Union citizens is not marginal. Yet, the image of the European Union citizenry that becomes visible via the news media remains nationally entrenched and references to a truly European citizenry are rare. The study also uses multilevel regressions to explain the visibility of European Union citizens in the news coverage. The empirical analyses are based on a large-scale content analysis of TV news and newspaper articles of the 2009 European Parliament election.p>

Sophie Hahn analyses downward mobility in educational attainment from a sociological life-course perspective. In order to avoid status loss children of higher-educated parents have to persevere through long educational careers. How large is their risk of intergenerational downward mobility in educational attainment and how does it shape their educational pathways? Does their parents' education still play a role in decisions at late stages of the educational career such as dropping out of and re-entering higher education? Drawing on retrospective longitudinal data of the German National Education Panel Study (NEPS) this book addresses these questions.

The current work follows the premise that fictional oral narratives represent socio-emotionally and academically relevant communicative practices. Two studies are presented, aiming to (1) analyze the narrative skills of preschool-age Turkish-German dual language learners (DLLs) and (2) explore a peer-assisted approach to supporting DLLs' narrative skills in early childhood education and care. The findings relate to the influence of dual language learning on narrative production and provide emerging evidence for the effectiveness of a peer-assisted narrative intervention approach.

Max Gath presents a multiagent system for the optimization of transport logistics in highly complex and dynamic domains. The described solution dynamically optimizes processes and provides a high flexibility, scalability, robustness, and adaptability to individual customer demands. The experimental evaluation points out the effectiveness and efficiency by using the example of commonly applied benchmarks as well as two case studies in groupage traffic and in courier, express, and parcel services with same-day deliveries. Both case studies were performed with leading transport companies in Germany. The results demonstrate that the multiagent-based solution satisfies domain-specific requirements and exploits high optimization potential in real-world processes.
