In this book, Eva-Maria Maggi argues that the European Union (EU) had an impact on institutional reform processes in North Africa in cases where major domestic actors agreed. She analyzes how political actors in Morocco used EU neighborhood policies to shape economic and environmental policy between 1995 and 2008. Maggi argues that it was not the design of the EU's neighborhood policies but rather the will of change of domestic actors in Morocco that determined the pace, direction of reform and the extent to which the EU continues to play a role in them. This monograph is concerned with the analysis and numerical solution of a stochastic inverse anomaly detection problem in electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Martin Simon studies the problem of detecting a parameterized anomaly in an isotropic, stationary and ergodic conductivity random field whose realizations are rapidly oscillating. For this purpose, he derives Feynman-Kac formulae to rigorously justify stochastic homogenization in the case of the underlying stochastic boundary value problem. The author combines techniques from the theory of partial differential equations and functional analysis with probabilistic ideas, paving the way to new mathematical theorems which may be fruitfully used in the treatment of the problem at hand. Moreover, the author proposes an efficient numerical method in the framework of Bayesian inversion for the practical solution of the stochastic inverse anomaly detection problem.

This book presents the first multidimensional investigation of KIE in the context of low-tech industries and gives insights in paradox conditions and specific mechanisms, using the example of the German textile industry. Therefore, the author solves conceptual inconsistencies and develops an alternative framework referring to systemic concepts of sectoral innovation systems and KIE as well as to the concept of institutional entrepreneurs. As a result, the deviation of willful actors from a restricting institutional environment and sources of entrepreneurial opportunities can be investigated more comprehensively.

Die vorliegende Arbeit mochte anhand des Gehirn-Geist-Problems zeigen, warum eine radikale methodologische Neubegrundung der Philosophie notwendig ist. Sie umfasst zwei Teile: Im ersten Teil wird eine philosophische Methode und Methodologie im engeren Sinne begrundet und ausgearbeitet, im zweiten Teil  eine hieraus folgende begriffliche Neubestimmung des Menschseins (in Form einer Fundamentalanthropologie) unternommen.  Anders als in der platonisch-cartesianischen Tradition und im gegenwartigen Naturalismus wird der Mensch hierbei nicht auf ein (Korper) oder zwei Aspekte (Korper und Geist) reduziert, sondern als das komplexe Zusammenspiel von sechs Grundmomenten (Anthropoialien) verstanden.  Neben Korper und Geistigkeit sind dies: der Leib, die Umwelt, das Erleben und das Ich. Durch diese holistische Beschreibung gelingt dann auch eine originelle Auflosung des Gehirn-Geist-Problems.

Richard Moser shows how to use and upgrade toy bricks for the construction of a lightweight, low-cost and easy to reproduce tensile testing setup. Tailored for the characterization of elastomers and stretchable electrodes, the setup is capable of performing stress-strain studies along with resistance-strain measurements. Based on the underlying theory of material deformation and rubber elasticity, the author applies the setup to mechanically characterize polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with different grades of stiffness. The versatility of the device is highlighted with the electromechanical characterization of stretchable thin film metal electrodes on PDMS. Applications of the author's setup range from using it as an educational tool in practical physics and engineering courses over being showcase in scientific exhibitions to its utilization as an inexpensive and reliable laboratory tool.

Astrid Bothmann examines historical, political and socioeconomic factors that explain the absence of transitional justice in Nicaragua from 1990 to 2012. The author provides the first systematic analysis of the reasons for the lack of transitional justice in Nicaragua after the end of the Sandinista regime and the civil war (1990). Contrary to other Latin American states of the third wave of democratization, which put the perpetrators of past crimes on trial, established truth commissions, purged political and military officials, and made reparations to the victims, Nicaragua's first post-war government opted for a policy of national reconciliation that was based on amnesty and oblivion. Subsequent governments followed this course so that the past has not been dealt with until today.

Comparing Germany's and Brazil's government perspectives, Sybille Roehrkasten reveals that the ideas on global renewable energy governance are highly contested. In her study, the author sheds light on the politics behind the definition of global governance issues, focusing on two pioneers in the worldwide promotion of renewables and two decisive players in this emergent area of global cooperation. Fernanda Antunes Carvalho addresses an issue of key importance to the field of systematics, namely how to foster taxonomic work and the dissemination of scientific knowledge about species by taking full advantage of electronic data and bioinformatics tools. The first part focuses on the development of an electronic monograph of the papaya family (Caricaceae) using existing infrastructures of Information Technology (IT) and bioinformatic tools that together set the stage for a new era of systematics. Based on the plastid and nuclear DNA data, the author inferred historical processes in the second part that may have shaped the evolution of the Caricaceae and explain their current geographic distribution. Ralf Karrenberg presents Whole-Function Vectorization (WFV), an approach that allows a compiler to automatically create code that exploits data-parallelism using SIMD instructions. Data-parallel applications such as particle simulations, stock option price estimation or video decoding require the same computations to be performed on huge amounts of data. Without WFV, one processor core executes a single instance of a data-parallel function. WFV transforms the function to execute multiple instances at once using SIMD instructions. The author describes an advanced WFV algorithm that includes a variety of analyses and code generation techniques. He shows that this approach improves the performance of the generated code in a variety of use cases.

Sebastian Uhlig presents the first experimental investigation of self-organized surface structures (LIPSS) generated by ablation from different (semiconductor and metallic) targets with an ultrafast white-light continuum (WLC) spreading in wavelength from 400-750 nm. The main goal is to study the possibility of LIPSS formation upon irradiation with an incoherent and polychromatic light source (e.g. the WLC) in order to discriminate between the two debated formation scenarios. The generation of a suitable WLC in terms of sufficient white-light pulse energy, broad spectral bandwidth, and low spatial coherence for the LIPSS generation, as well as the characterization of this WLC are additional important objectives of this work.
