Scholarship in public relations, however, is more recent in origin with a history of less than four decades. However, there is potential for growth and improvement in many areas of the public relations literature. Over the decades, among other things, public re- tions scholarship has largely remained parochial to specific regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Latin America, German speaking Europe, etc. as evidenced in the bibliographic references of many essays in this volume itself where authors predo- nantly cite work from their own regions. This is often necessitated by linguistic differences with only English serving as the universal language that helps permeate knowledge through most regions. It is possible to observe the particular positions and movements of an individual dancer and thereby identify the performance as a speci?c dance, while it is impossible to observe the performance of the dance devoid of the positions and movements of the dancer. Still, any other dancer may well perform the same dance, and just therefore it is possible to distinguish the particular positions and movements that constitute a speci?c dance from any individual performance. ¿Such remarks indicate that we are aware of two ontologically distinct entities within one perceptual phenomenon,¿ Gill (1975) highlights. Knowing the dancer from the dance is neither purpose nor objective of the following contemplation. Nonetheless, the paradox that it is both possible and impossible to know the dancer from the dance is intriguing enough to introduces this work¿s genuine purpose and objective. 1. 1 Purpose and Objective The primary interest of this work rests with organizational knowledge and the associated concepts of organizational learning and memory, not the least because many argue that organizational knowledge is the main source of competitive advantage (e. g. , Grant, 1996; Kogut & Zander, 1992; Nahapiet & Ghoshal, 1998; Nonaka, 1991, 1994; Prahalad & Hamel, 1990).

Foreword A diversified firm¿s withdrawal from a business unit (i.e. business exit) is a very - portant phenomenon in management practice. In fact, studies from the U.S. show that approximately 2,500 business units are sold each year. According to a survey of the consulting firm Accenture among 150 executives from the Fortune 1000 companies, 59 % of the persons polled are momentarily divesting at least one business unit. - though divestitures are highly relevant in practice, researchers in strategic management tend to prefer investigating the counterpart of exit, namely the acquisition of business units. Trying to fill this gap, Ms. Decker¿s dissertation aims to shed light on the impact of business exit on the corporate strategy of the divesting parent firm. First, Ms. Decker summarizes the literature on business exit from the last three d- ades in a systematic and comprehensible way. This is a deserving task since the l- erature on this topic is widely dispersed, e.g. in the field of finance, amongst others. Referring to the existing findings, the literature review shows that prior research has mainly focused on two questions: ¿What factors promote business exit?¿ and ¿What are the financial outcomes of business exit for the divesting parent firm?¿. Drawing on this background, the author convincingly argues that, up to now, the strategic impli- tions of business exit for the divesting parent firm have largely been ignored.

During the past few years, determining the ¿value of IT¿ has ranked high on the agenda of IT managers and Chief Information O?cers (CIOs). The rather broad and abstract topic has been intensively discussed in the Information Systems literature for many years. It turns into a very tangible problem in the ?eld of IT cost accounting. Nowadays, c- porate information systems are distributed systems. A detailed measurement of resource demands of IT services on a distributed IT-infrastructure and respective accounting and cost allocation turns out to be very expensive and impractical in most cases. The large proportion of indirect costs and the di?culty of ?nding adequate allocation rates are a signi?cant problem in practice, regularly leading to free-rider problems. This problem has largely been ignored in the academic literature so far. Dr. Brandl proposes a method to derive estimators for the resource demand of service requests in a distributed IT infr- tructure. This estimator is based on a set of load tests and respective measurements as they are often performed during the deployment phase of new information systems. Cost allocation keys can now be determined based on the number of service invocations per user or per department and the respective estimators. While these measurements provide a lean method for the determination of usage-based cost allocation keys, it is not obvious that the estimators have su?cient accuracy, in p- ticular concerning di?erent types of services and volatile workloads.

To select the most suitable simulation algorithm for a given task is often difficult. This is due to intricate interactions between model features, implementation details, and runtime environment, which may strongly affect the overall performance. An automated selection of simulation algorithms supports users in setting up simulation experiments without demanding expert knowledge on simulation.  Roland Ewald analyzes and discusses existing approaches to solve the algorithm selection problem in the context of simulation. He introduces a framework for automatic simulation algorithm selection and describes its integration into the open-source modelling and simulation framework James II. Its selection mechanisms are able to cope with three situations: no prior knowledge is available, the impact of problem features on simulator performance is unknown, and a relationship between problem features and algorithm performance can be established empirically. The author concludes with an experimental evaluation of the developed methods.
