This book gives a detailed discussion of the initial enthusiasm triggered by the discovery of x-rays and radioactive radiation which later turned into fear and repulsion in a significant part of the global population up to the 21st century.After a historical review, the author discusses the effect of ionizing radiation on living cells, tissues and organisms. He then describes the relationship between the dose of radiation and the effect it produces. He shows how the dose-effect dependence is measured and what models of describing such dependences are used. He also discusses how radiation acts on living organisms: disorders in the genetic apparatus, mutation formation and so on. The book also includes detailed descriptions of the results of numerous health studies of large groups of people who, for one reason or another, were exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation, including those that significantly exceed the natural radiation background. The author concludes that low doses of radiation are safe and can even be beneficial (as known from medical radiation treatment); and also that the natural radiation background is necessary for the normal growth and development and well-being of a living organism. The author also discusses cases and effects of large doses, arguing, however, that dangerous doses of radiation are very unlikely. This book challenges radio-phobia. It not only offers arguments helping to overcome an unreasonable fear but, based on the latest understanding of science, argues to gradually move back, not to the former radio-euphoria, but to a new, conscious attitude towards radiation.

This textbook approaches the history of English from a theoretical perspective. The book provides a brief chronological overview describing the way in which the English language has changed over time from Old English to Modern English, while subsequent parts adopt a theoretical focus that is thematically organised to deal with the question of how and why English changed in the way it did, including a part addressing some specific contact-induced changes and key topics such as English as a Lingua Franca. Supported throughout with information boxes with empirical studies, the examples given are all drawn from English, but boxes with examples from other languages tie the development of the English language into changes in other contexts and settings. This book is an ideal resource for undergraduate students of the English Language and historical linguistics.

The aim of this work is to present, in a unified and reasonably self-contained way, certain aspects of functional analysis which are needed to treat function spaces whose topology is not derived from a single norm, their topological duals and operators between those spaces. We treat spaces of continuous, analytic and smooth functions as well as sequence spaces. Operators of differentiation, integration, composition, multiplication and partial differential operators between those spaces are studied. A brief introduction to Laurent Schwartz¿s theory of distributions and to Lars Hörmander¿s approach to linear partial differential operators is presented.The novelty of our approach lies mainly on two facts. First of all, we show all these topics together in an accessible way, stressing the connection between them. Second, we keep it always at a level that is accessible to beginners and young researchers. Moreover, parts of the book might be of interest for researchers in functional analysis and operator theory. Our aim is not to build and describe a whole, complete theory, but to serve as an introduction to some aspects that we believe are interesting. We wish to guide any reader that wishes to enter in some of these topics in their first steps. Our hope is that they learn interesting aspects of functional analysis and become interested to broaden their knowledge about function and sequence spaces and operators between them.The text is addressed to students at a master level, or even undergraduate at the last semesters, since only knowledge on real and complex analysis is assumed. We have intended to be as self-contained as possible, and wherever an external citation is needed, we try to be as precise as we can.
