This book explores the concept of 'resilience' in the context of militaries and militarization. Focusing on the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia, and continental Europe, it argues that, post-9/11, there has been a shift away from 'trauma' and towards 'resilience' in framing and understanding human responses to calamitous events. The contributors to this volume show how resilience-speech has been militarized, and deeply entrenched in imagined communities. As the concept travels, it is applied in diverse and often contradictory ways to a vast array of experiences, contexts, and scientific fields and disciplines. By embracing diverse methodologies and perspectives, this book reflects on how resilience has been weaponized and employed in highly gendered ways, and how it is central to neoliberal governance in the twenty-first century. While critical of the use of resilience, the chapters also reflect on more positive ways for humans to respond to unforeseen challenges.

Framework Decision 2009/948/JHA on the prevention and settlement of conflicts of exercise of jurisdiction in criminal proceedings established an ad hoc procedure for settling conflicts of criminal jurisdiction based on the mutual exchange of information and the establishment of direct consultations between the competent authorities with a view to reaching consensus on an effective solution. However, neither common legally binding criteria for deciding the best jurisdiction nor specific rules for the transfer of proceedings (which can occur after parallel proceedings have been identified) were established in this instrument, or in any other instrument adopted by the EU to date.This book analyses the current EU legal framework on conflicts of jurisdiction and transfer of criminal proceedings, paying special attention to its numerous shortcomings and loopholes from a fundamental rights and due process of law perspective. The book begins with an assessment of the various principles and grounds used by Member States for claiming criminal jurisdiction. Secondly, de lege lata EU procedure on the settlement of conflicts of criminal jurisdiction, as well as its implementation in Spain and Italy, are thoroughly examined. After discussing the main principles and fundamental rights at stake, the author proposes two alternative and original de lege ferenda models for the prevention and settlement of conflicts of criminal jurisdiction and transfer of criminal proceedings, exploring the different possibilities offered by the EU's primary law.

This book provides comprehensive insights into the theory, models, and unique characteristics of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and its appealing applications in wireless information and power transmission for B5G/6G. It is organized as follows:Chapter 1 gives an overview of the fundamentals of IRS, including the signal and channel models of IRS, its hardware architecture, advantages and practical constraints. Chapter 2, 3 and 4 focus on how to optimize the joint design of active and passive beamforming for three types of IRS-aided wireless information/energy transmission systems, namely IRS-aided power transfer (WPT), IRS-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) and IRS-aided wireless powered communication networks (WPCN).Chapter 2 specifically presents a general framework design for IRS-aided WPT systems from the perspectives of energy beamforming design and channel estimation, while the dynamic IRS beamforming design is also discussed.Chapter 3 thoroughly studies the IRS-aided SWIPT for achieving better R-E trade-off, wherein two different designs based on weighted sum-power maximization at energy users (EUs) and under individual quality-of-service (QoS), requirements at both information users (IUs) and EUs are investigated. Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere draws on criminology and social theory to explore and expand social historical themes in the analysis of perceptions of deviance and crime in the eighteenth century. Developing the theoretical device of Folk Devils and Moral Panics, instigated by Stanley Cohen and developed by Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda, the book explores the social discovery of, and public response to, crime and deviance in that period. Detailed contemporary case studies of youth violence, sexual deviance, and substance abuse are used to argue that Hanoverian London and its novel media can be identified as the initiating historical site for what might now be termed public order moral panics. The authors discuss trade-offs between power density and efficiency of the methodology for the 130 nm CMOS technology, and how to implement it on other CMOS technologies. The book describes the state-of-the-art of fully or near-fully integrated SC DC-DC converters with multiple conversion ratios and the techniques used to enhance the overall performance of these converters. Coverage includes the trade-off between the number of conversion ratios and overall extracted efficiency from a supercapacitor, as well as the sizing of the converter cells according to the desired output power and maximum clock frequency. This textbook is an approachable introduction to statistical analysis using matrix algebra. Prior knowledge of matrix algebra is not necessary. Advanced topics are easy to follow through analyses that were performed on an open-source spreadsheet using a few built-in functions. These topics include ordinary linear regression, as well as maximum likelihood estimation, matrix decompositions, nonparametric smoothers and penalized cubic splines. Each data set (1) contains a limited number of observations to encourage readers to do the calculations themselves, and (2) tells a coherent story based on statistical significance and confidence intervals. In this way, students will learn how the numbers were generated and how they can be used to make cogent arguments about everyday matters. This textbook is designed for use in upper level undergraduate courses or first year graduate courses.The first chapter introduces students to linear equations, then covers matrix algebra, focusing on three essential operations: sum of squares, the determinant, and the inverse.
