Software Design - Cognitive Aspects covers a variety of areas including software analysis, design, coding and maintenance. It details the history of the research that has been conducted since the 1970s in this fast-developing field before defining a computer program from a computing and cognitive psychology viewpoint. Detailed treatment is given to the two essential sides of programming; software production and software understanding and throughout the book parallels are drawn between studies on processing texts written in natural language and processing computer programs. This book will be of particular interest to researchers, practitioners and graduate students in Computer Science, Cognitive Psychology, and Cognitive Ergonomics.

The aim of this book is to provide a straightforward summary of the knowledge required for examinations in specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Part Two of the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists would be a good example. The volume is intended as a*companion to the highly successfulBasicSciencesforObstetricsandGynaecology which covers the knowledge required for preliminary examinations. Increasingly, examinations ofall types are based on multiple choice questions (MCQ) or structured answer questions (SAQ). No apology is made for the fact that the present book addresses the sort of "e;fact"e; which lends itself to testing by this approach. Thus, there is little discussion of speculative or contentious areas, no account of present or future research, and no references. Numerous excellent books are available which cover these topics in a much fuller and more discursive manner, and the present volume does not seek to emulate them. Even the most apparently immutable facts are subject to periodic revision. We have attempted to present the "e;state-of-the-art"e;: most of the material is generally if not universally accepted. A particular problem arises with numerical information. Frequencies of diseases, frequency of clinical findings, efficiency of diagnostic tests and therapies, have almost always been the subject ofnumerous different studies, each of which yields somewhat different results.

In Disasters and Accidents in Manned Spaceflight, David Shayler examines the challenges that face all crews as they prepare and execute their missions. The book covers all aspects that make up spaceflight by a human crew - training, launch to space, survival in space and return from space - followed by a series of case histories which tell of the major incidents in each of those categories over the past 40 years. The sixth section looks at the International Space Station and how it is planned, to try and prevent, as far as possible, major incidents occuring during the lifetime of the space station, and at the difficulties facing a settlement on the Moon or Mars during the next 40 years.

Network Algebra considers the algebraic study of networks and their behaviour. It contains general results on the algebraic theory of networks, recent results on the algebraic theory of models for parallel programs, as well as results on the algebraic theory of classical control structures. The results are presented in a unified framework of the calculus of flownomials, leading to a sound understanding of the algebraic fundamentals of the network theory. The term 'network' is used in a broad sense within this book, as consisting of a collection of interconnecting cells, and two radically different specific interpretations of this notion of networks are studied. One interpretation is additive, when only one cell is active at a given time - this covers the classical models of control specified by finite automata or flowchart schemes. The second interpretation is multiplicative, where each cell is always active, covering models for parallel computation such as Petri nets or dataflow networks. More advanced settings, mixing the two interpretations are included as well. Network Algebra will be of interest to anyone interested in network theory or its applications and provides them with the results needed to put their work on a firm basis. Graduate students will also find the material within this book useful for their studies.

Although transits of planets across the Sun are rare (only Mercury and Venus orbit the Sun closer than us, and so can transit the Sun's disc) amateur astronomers can observe, record and image other kinds of transit, which are very much more frequent. Transit is in two parts, the first telling the fascinating story of the early scientific expeditions to observe transits. The second part is for practical observers, and explains how to observe transits of all sorts - even transits of aircraft as they fly between the observer and the Sun!

10 The visible Universe is a little more than 10 years old - the best estimate is 15 billion 50 years. It contains approximately 10 tonnes of matter. Studying the ways in which this material is arranged, and the processes which shape it over time, provide the basis for the oldest science in the world: astronomy. Structures in space which have resulted from aeons of cosmic evolution combine immensity and delicacy in a way which gives astronomical photographs a rare aesthetic appeal. This book uses the artful astrophotography and electronic imaging of Michael Stecker to illustrate these structures, and to illuminate the descriptions and explanations from Bernard Abrams which surround them. Selections from the Stecker Files have been chosen for more detailed description, including matters of imaging technique, as we expect there will be active astrophotographers as well as armchair astronomers in our audience - both are most welcome. This selection was extremely difficult; all the images are worthy of such consideration while speaking eloquently for themselves.

The topics of control engineering and signal processing continue to flourish and develop. In common with general scientific investigation, new ideas, concepts and interpretations emerge quite spontaneously and these are then discussed, used, discarded or subsumed into the prevailing subject paradigm. Sometimes these innovative concepts coalesce into a new sub-discipline within the broad subject tapestry ofcontrol and signal processing. This preliminary batde between old and new usually takes place at conferences, through the Internet and in the journals of the discipline. After a litde more maturity has been acquiredhas been acquired by the new concepts then archival publication as ascientificorengineering monograph mayoccur. Anewconceptin control and signal processing is known to have arrived when sufficient material has developed for the topic to be taught as a specialised tutorial workshop or as a course to undergraduates, graduates or industrial engineers. The Advanced Textbooks in Control and Signal Processing Series is designed as a vehicle for the systematic presentation ofcourse material for both popular and innovative topics in the discipline. It is hoped that prospective authors will welcome the opportunity to publish a structured presentation of either existing subject areas or some of the newer emerging control and signal processing technologies.

Formal methods have already been shown to improve the development process and quality assurance in system design and implementation. This volume examines whether these benefits also apply to the field of human-computer interface design and implementation, and whether formal methods can offer useful support in usability evaluation and obtaining more reliable implementations of user requirements. Its main aim is to compare the different approaches and examine which particular type of implementation and problem each one is best suited to. To enable the reader to compare and contrast the approaches as easily as possible, each one is applied to the same case study: the specification of an ideal Netscape-like web browser and html page server. The resulting volume will provide invaluable reading for final year undergraduate and postgraduate courses on user interfaces, user interface design, and applications of formal methods.

Post-Operative Recovery and Pain Relief describes the major problems that may be encountered during recovery from anaesthesia and suggest how they may be avoided by careful monitoring, vigilant nursing and sound organization. The behaviour of patients during recovery is influenced by their pre-operative medical condition, by drugs they may receive both pre- and intra-operatively and by the nature of the surgery they have undergone. This updated and revised version of Eltringham's "e;Post Anaesthetic Recovery"e; contains sections devoted to each of these areas which reflect the current best practice. Post-Operative Recovery and Pain Relief will be of interest not only to nursing staff working in operating theatres and post-operative care units but also to those working in surgical units, house officers and junior anaesthetists.

Distance determination - finding out how far away different astronomical objects are - is an essential and currently highly topical subject in astronomy. A great deal of progress has been made during the last part of the 20th century. Measuring the Universe provides a unified treatment of the various techniques used for distance determination. It begins by describing methods to measure distances on Earth then gradually climbs the "distance ladder" to enable us to estimate the distance to the farthest objects, ending with a discussion of particle horizons within an expanding and inflationary universe. Aimed at first-year undergraduates of astronomy and astrophysics, the book emphasises general physical principles rather than mathematical detail. The text is enhanced and complemented by the use of many worked examples, and questions and problem solving exercises at the end of each chapter.
