This book compares network governance practices and public service delivery in England and China. Adopting a political ethnographic approach, it assesses whether networked forms of governance are used in provision of care for the elderly and those with learning disabilities in the two countries. It also examines several concepts from network governance theory - including interdependence and resource exchange, trust and reciprocity, and diplomatic skills - in the context of English and Chinese local state engagement with NGOs providing and managing care. The book explores current characteristics of the urban built environment in view of possible future transformations. A cross-reading analysis of existing public social housing buildings is proposed, based on the investigation of their architectural, structural, and energetic characteristics. The study aims to provide an integrated approach that captures the link between typology, construction, and energy demands, offering a key to understanding the main critical issues and transformation readiness. It focuses on large-scale interventions composing public social housing stocks, realized during the second half of the twentieth century. More than other public interventions, such building stocks clearly lack in meeting current housing needs such as modern apartment architectural layout, energy and structural regulations, and social mix. However, due to their numerical presence, strategical and widespread distribution across urban areas, and transformability, these buildings can bethe target for future strategic regeneration projects. In particular, the book thoroughly investigates the social housing estate constructed in Rome (Italy) after the approval in 1964 of the first urban economic and social housing plan.

This monograph studies the synchronization control of Markovian complex neural networks with time-varying delays, and the structure of the book is summarized as follows. Chapter 1 introduces the system description and some background knowledges, and also addresses the motivations of this monograph. In Chapter 2, the stochastic synchronization issue of Markovian coupled neural networks with partially unknown transition rates and random coupling strengths is investigated. In Chapter 3, the local synchronization issue of Markovian neutral complex networks with partially information of transition rates is investigated. The new delay-dependent synchronization criteria in terms of LMIs are derived, which depends on the upper and lower bounds of the delays. In Chapter 4, the local synchronization issue of Markovian nonlinear coupled neural networks with uncertain and partially unknown transition rates is investigated. The less conservative local synchronization criteria containing the bounds of delay and delay derivative are obtained based on the novel augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a new integral inequality. In Chapter 5, the sampled-data synchronization issue of delayed complex networks with aperiodic sampling interval is investigated based on enhanced input delay approach, which makes full use of the upper bound of the variable sampling interval and the sawtooth structure information of varying input delay. In Chapter 6, the sampled-data synchronization issue of Markovian coupled neural networks with mode-dependent interval time-varying delays and aperiodic sampling intervals is investigated based on an enhanced input delay approach. Furthermore, the mode-dependent sampled-data controllers are proposed based on the delay dependent synchronization criteria. In Chapter 7, the synchronization issue of inertial neural networks with time-varying delays and generally Markovian jumping is investigated. In Chapter 8, we conclude the monograph by briefly summarizing the main theoretical findings.

After providing an in-depth introduction to derivative-free global optimization with various constraints, this book presents new original results from well-known experts on the subject. A primary focus of this book is the well-known class of deterministic DIRECT (DIviding RECTangle)-type algorithms. This book describes a new set of algorithms derived from newly developed partitioning, sampling, and selection approaches in the box- and generally-constrained global optimization, including extensions to multi-objective optimization. DIRECT-type optimization algorithms are discussed in terms of fundamental principles, potential, and boundaries of their applicability. The algorithms are analyzed from various perspectives to offer insight into their main features. This explains how and why they are effective at solving optimization problems. As part of this book, the authors also present several techniques for accelerating the DIRECT-type algorithms through parallelization and implementing efficient data structures by revealing the pros and cons of the design challenges involved. A collection of DIRECT-type algorithms described and analyzed in this book is available in DIRECTGO, a MATLAB toolbox on GitHub.
