The 1980 Maratea NATO Advanced Study Institute (= ASI) followed the lines of the 1976 Liege NATO ASI. Indeed, the interest of boundary problems for linear evolution partial differential equations and systems is more and more acute because of the outstanding position of those problems in the mathematical description of the physical world, namely through sciences such as fluid dynamics, elastodynamics, electro­ dynamics, electromagnetism, plasma physics and so on. In those problems the question of the propagation of singularities of the solution has boomed these last years. Placed in its definitive mathematical frame in 1970 by L. Hormander, this branch -of the theory recorded a tremendous impetus in the last decade and is now eagerly studied by the most prominent research workers in the field of partial differential equations. It describes the wave phenomena connected with the solution of boundary problems with very general boundaries, by replacing the (generailly impossible) computation of a precise solution by a convenient asymptotic approximation. For instance, it allows the description of progressive waves in a medium with obstacles of various shapes, meeting classical phenomena as reflexion, refraction, transmission, and even more complicated ones, called supersonic waves, head waves, creeping waves, ¿¿¿¿¿¿ The !'tudy of singularities uses involved new mathematical concepts (such as distributions, wave front sets, asymptotic developments, pseudo-differential operators, Fourier integral operators, microfunctions, ¿¿¿ ) but emerges as the most sensible application to physical problems. A complete exposition of the present state of this theory seemed to be still lacking.

The author provides an introduction to automated reasoning, and in particular to resolution theorem proving using the prover OTTER. He presents a new clausal version of von Neumann-Bernays-Gödel set theory, and lists over 400 theorems proved semiautomatically in elementary set theory. He presents a semiautomated proof that the composition of homomorphisms is a homomorphism, thus solving a challenge problem. The author next develops Peano's arithmetic, and gives more than 1200 definitions and theorems in elementary number theory. He gives part of the proof of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic (unique factorization), and gives and OTTER-generated proof of Euler's generalization of Fermat's theorem. Next he develops Tarski's geometry within OTTER. He obtains proofs of most of the challenge problems appearing in the literature, and offers further challenges. He then formalizes the modal logic calculus K4, in order to obtain very high level automated proofs of Löb's theorem, and of Gödel's two incompleteness theorems. Finally he offers thirty-one unsolved problems in elementary number theory as challenge problems.

The 157th IAU Symposium on 'The Cosmic Dynamo' was the first which was entirely dedicated to dynamo processes, which are fundamental on all cosmic scales. Dynamo theory concerns one of the few truly key questions of recent cosmic physics. A complicated interplay of rotation, magnetism and turbulence determines stellar and galactic activity for almost all the short and medium time scales. Behind these multiform phenomena, the cosmic dynamo works in various guises, all involving inductive and dissipative equilibria in rotating turbulent cosmic plasmas. This book presents an up-to-date survey on investigations and results of dynamo theory and related observations, and is intended for graduate scientists working in the field of cosmical magnetism and the related problems, especially convection, turbulence and, more general, nonlinear physics.

The usual book on the theory of spectral line formation begins with an in-depth dis­ cussion of radiation transfer, including the elegant methods of obtaining analytical solutions for special cases, and of the physics of line broadening. Neither of those features will be found in this book. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the essentials of transport theory and of line broadening and is ready to investi­ gate some of the particular applications of the theory to the flow of line photons through the outer layers of a star, or other tenuous media. The main thrust of this book is toward the compilation and presentation of a vast quantity of computational material available to the author in the form of computer output. The material presented represents a highly filtered sample of the published work in this subject plus an extensive set of previously unpublished results. To present large quantities of computer output in an intelligible and efficient way is a difficult task, for which I have found no really satisfactory solution. Chapters III and IV, in particular, contain almost exclusively this type of presentation. The reader may find these chapters somewhat tedious because of the level of condensation of the material. I have tried to reach a reasonable balance between over condensation and excessive detail, which in the long run may be irrelevant.

The use of hermit crabs as an experimental model for motivational studies is discussed in this book by expert behavioural ecologists. The book is timely since there is a growing recognition that the integration of causal and functional studies are needed, which is discussed by the authors. This book should be of interest to a wide range of behavioural ecologists.

This book is a direct result of a symposium held in December 1988, in Washington, DC, honoring Professor Emeritus Miodrag Ristic for his contributions to rickettsial disease research, in general, and, to ehrlichiosis, in particular. He and his colleagues in the United States Army Medical Research Unit brought to the world's attention an epidemic of ehrlichiosis, that occurred in German shepherd dogs during the Vietnam War. The group was able to culture the microorganism Ehrlichia canis and to fulfill Koch's postulates. They eventually developed an indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test which has been adopted internationally. The same group joined a national effort to decipher another mysterious disease known as Potomac horse fever (PHF). They used the same technology developed by Nyindo in Dr. Ristic's laboratory to isolate, characterize, and again develop a similar IFA test for PHF. Today PHF has been diagnosed, at least serologically, practically across the entire United States, in some provinces of Canada, and reports are beginning to trickle in of its occurrence in European countries. Thus, the etiologic agent of PHF, now named after Professor Ristic, Ehrlichia risticii, historically places this scientist side by side with the other 2 "R's", i. e. , Ricketts and da Rochalima. Ehrlichiosis is not limited to domestic animals. Sennetsu rickettsiosis, long known by Japanese scientists as an imitator of "infectious mononucleosis," was subsequently shown to be caused by an ehrlichial agent, through collaborative efforts among the United States Army, the University of Illinois, and Dr.

This book is designed as a self-contained introduction to both the understanding and solution of theoretical and practical design problems in single- and multimode planar optical waveguides and devices in silica-based technologies. It provides both a qualitative physical description and quantitative analytical and numerical derivations of the fundamental attributes of waveguiding, device response and simple passive optical circuitry.

Radiochemical methodology constitutes the most important base for the successful functioning of a PET group in the routine production and development of radiopharmaceuticals. Of the several hundred products which have been labelled with positron emitters during the past two decades about 35 are presently considered to be of major interest. The time for a state-of-the-art review is right, since this field has advanced over the past fifteen years to reach a level where guidelines can now be suggested. Chapters of this book deal with each of the main methodological aspects of the chemistry needed to develop an effective radiopharmaceutical, namely radionuclide production, automation and metabolite analysis. A further chapter on QA/QC is written by a broadly-based expert group and is meant to provide a guideline and a base for future monographs and regulations on major PET radiopharmaceuticals of today. This book will help the increasing numbers of scientists who are now entering the field of PET to appreciate the methodological aspects that are normally addressed by chemists in relation to PET radiopharmaceuticals; it provides many useful practical guidelines and will promote early success in their own endeavours, since these will often necessarily begin by establishing chemical methodology of the kind discussed here.

Prominences are amazing objects of great beauty whose formation, basic structure and eruption represent one of the basic unsolved problems in Solar Physics. It is now 14 years since the last book on prominences appeared (Tandberg-Hanssen, 1974), during which time much progress in our knowledge of the physics of prominences has been made, and so the time is ripe for a new text book which it is hoped will be a helpful summary of the subject for students, postdocs and solar researchers. Indeed, the last few years has seen an upsurge in interest in prominences due to high­ resolution ground-and space-based observations and advances in theory. For example, an IAU colloquium was held in Oslo (Jensen et al, 1978), a Solar Maximum Mission Workshop took place at Goddard Space Right Center (poland, 1986), an IAU Colloquium is planned in Yugoslavia in September 1989 in prominences and it is expected that the SOHO satellite will be a further stimulus to prominence research. In November 1987 a Workshop on the Dynamics and Structure of Solar Prominences was held in Palma Mallorca at the invitation of Jose Luis Ballester with the aim of bringing observers and theorists together and having plenty of time for in-depth discussions of the basic physics of promi­ nences.
