This volume contains two-page abstracts of the 698 papers presented at the ¿16th European Conference of Fracture,¿ (ECF16) held in Alexandroupolis, Greece, July 3-7, 2006. The accompanying CD attached at the back cover of the book contains the full length papers. The abstracts of the fifteen plenary lectures are included in the beginning of the book. The remaining 683 abstracts are arranged in 25 tracks and 35 special symposia/sessions with 303 and 380 abstracts, respectively. The papers of the tracks have been contributed from open call, while the papers of the symposia/sessions have been solicited by the respective organizers. Both tracks and symposia/sessions fall into two categories, namely, fracture of nanomaterials and structures and engineering materials and structures with 88 and 595 papers, respectively. Started in 1976, the European Conference of Fracture (ECF) takes place every two years in a European country. Its scope is to promote world-wide cooperation among scientists and engineers concerned with fracture and fatigue of solids. ECF16 was under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) and was sponsored by the American Society of Testing and Materials, the British Society for Stain Measurement, the Society of Experimental Mechanics, the Italian Society for Experimental Mechanics, and the Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers. ECF16 focused in all aspects of structural integrity with the objective of improving the safety and performance of engineering structures, components, systems and their associated materials.

Grasslands comprise more than a quarter of the Earth's land surface. In addition to supporting a wide range of vertebrates such as domestic livestock and a variety of games species, grassland is the natural habitat for a wide range of invertebrate species, and this book considers those which occur in grassland and their impact on soil fertility and herbage growth. It describes grassland as a habitat for invertebrates, the groups which occur there and their abudance. An extensive literature on grassland invertebrates scattered through numerous scientific journals and reports is drawn on in an attempt to develop an overview. In the opening chapter the major grassland types are considered and the features which influence the distribution and abudance of the invertebrates which inhabit them are discussed. Next the major taxonomic groups are reviewed in turn, with a brief account of their biology and ecology and of their ecosystem role. Some general features of grassland invertebrate communities are then described and teh factors which influence th epopulation densities of their constituent species are considered. Particular attentionm is given to the ways in which populations are influenced by management practices. The final and largest chapterdeals with the various ways in which invertebrates influence important grassland processes through ingestion of organic matter, interaction with injurious species is considered, with particular emphasis on the potential for achieving this through manipulating grassland management practices.

In the past few decades Computer Hardware Description Languages (CHDLs) have been a rapidly expanding subject area due to a number of factors, including the advancing complexity of digital electronics, the increasing prevalence of generic and programmable components of software-hardware and the migration of VLSI design to high level synthesis based on HDLs. Currently the subject has reached the consolidation phase in which languages and standards are being increasingly used, at the same time as the scope is being broadened to additional application areas. This book presents the latest developments in this area and provides a forum from which readers can learn from the past and look forward to what the future holds.

Previously published in hardback and now made available in paperback, this ground-breaking book is a must for all interested in butterflies, whether as conservation biologist, amateur or professional entomologist or as a student studying the phenomenon of butterfly populations as part of a number of biology, ecology or conservation courses. Recently, many British butterflies have suffered severe declines whole others have flourished and expanded in range. This is the first book to describe the results from a British scheme to monitor butterflies during this period of change. The Monitoring Scheme, initiated in 1976 by the senior author is based on frequent counts at some 90 sites throughout Britain. The combined efforts of both amateurs and professionals have thus produced a dataset with no equivalent elsewhere in the world. The book therefore provides a unique perspective on trends in numbers, extinction and foundation of populations; flight periods, local distributions, migration and other aspects of population ecology. Practical problems encountered during the conservation of butterflies of individual sites are outlined. The relevance of this monitoring for an understanding of the effects of the weather - climatic warming - is described.

A major challenge confronting the pharmaceutical scientist working with protein formulation is the instability during processing, storage and use of the protein drug. This book reviews stability aspects encountered since the pioneering isolation of insulin in 1921. An introductory chapter, treating insulin purity and stability in historical perspective, is followed by a chapter with a description of the structure of insulin. The main part of the book is a comprehensive review of the literature dealing with stability of insulin in pharmaceutical formulation, including biological stability and the physical and chemical decomposition of insulin. The physical stability (i.e. the tendency of insulin to form insoluble fibrils) is reviewed as are methods to stabilize insulin for long-term use in infusion pumps. The book will be of interest to research and clinical pharmacologists involved with insulin and other protein-based drug substances.

Emmanuel Levinas est le philosophe de la non-indifference; il n'est en aucune sorte un philosophe indifferent. Son inquietude personnelle et engagement politique ont trouve une expression philosophique dans une quete a deux versants. Dans le versant ontologique, il cherche a montrer que meme si l'homme est l'evenement de comprehension de l'etre, tout l'homme et toute signification ne se reduisent pas a la comprehension de l'etre seul. Dans le versant politique, il s'interroge sur la possibilite de soumettre la tendance totalitaire de toute politique a une recherche de justice qui ne depend pas finalement de la politique meme. Mais ces deux versants n'en font qu'un. La decouverte d'une signification qui excede la comprehension de l'etre - l'ethique - fournit en meme temps la source de renouvellement de la justice. Ainsi, par cette double question, Levinas nous presente les fils conducteurs de notre enquete: une signification au-dela de la comprehension de l'etre et sa portee ethique, que nous appelons langage et que nous explorons dans la perspective de son importance politique. Les etudes analytiques dans lesquelles les notions de politique et de langage fonctionnent comme clef d'interpretation mutuelle debouchent sur une critique centree sur deux problemes: l'impossibilite d'interpreter la signifiance de l'autre et le danger inherent a la conception d'une justice depassant l'Etat.

Das Erscheinen der Gesammelten Schriften Franz Rosenzweigs stellt ein Ereignis von besonderem geistigen Rang dar. Denn es ist ganz unbestritten, da Franz Rosenzweig zu den bedeutend- sten judischen Denkern unseres Jahrhunderts gehort, ja, da er vermutlich sogar weit uber unsere Epoche hinaus von Bedeutung sein wird. E. Levinas hat Rosenzweig nicht zu Unrecht Gestalten wie Blaise Pascal und Soren Kierkegaard an die Seite gestellt!. Gleichwohl ist das Werk Rosenzweigs bis jetzt nur schwer zu- ganglich gewesen. Und zwar nicht nur aus den Grunden, derent- wegen auch sonst ein Werk, das Entscheidendes zu sagen hat, seine Zeit braucht, bis es zuganglich wird, sondern auch deshalb, weil sich dem Schicksal des Werkes Rosenzweigs die leidvollen Spuren der judischen Emigration deutlich eingegraben haben. Franz Rosenzweig starb 42-jahrig im Dezember 1929, drei Jahre vor dem Ausbruch der braunen Diktatur. Edith Rosen- zweig, seine Gattin, konnte zwar 1935 und 1937 noch die Kleine- ren Schriften und eine Auswahl aus Rosenzweigs Briefen ver- offentlichen. Die beiden Bande gehoren zu den wenigen umfang- reicheren von Juden verfaten Buchern, deren Druck in jenen Jahren moglich war. An weitere Veroffentlichungen war damals aber nicht zu denken.

Dieser Buchtitel ist Teil des Digitalisierungsprojekts Springer Book Archives mit Publikationen, die seit den Anfangen des Verlags von 1842 erschienen sind. Der Verlag stellt mit diesem Archiv Quellen fur die historische wie auch die disziplingeschichtliche Forschung zur Verfugung, die jeweils im historischen Kontext betrachtet werden mussen. Dieser Titel erschien in der Zeit vor 1945 und wird daher in seiner zeittypischen politisch-ideologischen Ausrichtung vom Verlag nicht beworben.

TOPOLOGIE DES LOGOS UND KANT-INTERPRET A TION I. Topologie des Logos Die Geschichte der Philosophie ist die Geschichte der Entwicklung des Logos. Jedes System der Philosophie hat seinen Logos. Jedes System der Philosophie, welches seinen Logos hat, ist vom Standpunkte der Entwicklung der Philosophie als Ganzem gesehen eine notwendige Entwicklung des Logos. Die Geschichte der Philosophie ist, wie Hegel sagte, eine Entwicklung des absoluten Geistes. Aber diese Entwicklung des Logos soll man nicht als dialektische Entwicklung, wie Hegel sie sah, bezeichnen. Vielmehr befindet sich das System der Hegelschen Philosophie selber an einer besonderen Stelle der Entwicklung des Logos. Die Entwicklung des Logos ist nicht immer dialektisch-formelle Entwicklung und wird nicht in Dialektik bis zum Auersten getrieben. Wir mussen uns davor huten, die Entwicklung des Logos formell dialek- tisch zu sehen. Vielmehr mussen wir die Entwicklung des Logos - in der Phase der notwendigen Entwicklung, in der er sich befinde- positiv betrachten. Dialektische Konstruktion der Geschichte der Philosophie auf Kosten der Tatsachen, wie Hegel sie trieb, ist dogma- tisch-idealitisches Verhalten, und unser Verhalten soll nicht solches sein. Betrachten wir positiv die Entwicklung des Logos in der Geschich- te der Philosophie, so entsteht nicht dialektische Geschichtsauffassung, sondern Topologie der Entwicklung des Logos: kurz, die Topologie des Logo::. Nach der Topologie des Logos wird jedem System der Philoso- phie sein Topos in der Entwicklung des Logos als Ganzem gegeben.
