Clinical pharmacology plays an important role in today's medicine. Due to the high sensitivity, selectivity, and affordability of a mass spectrometer (MS), the high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analytical technique is widely used in the determination of drugs in human biological matrixes for clinical pharmacology. Fundamentals of Biomechanics introduces the exciting world of how human movement is created and how it can be improved. Teachers, coaches and physical therapists all use biomechanics to help people improve movement and decrease the risk of injury. The book presents a comprehensive review of the major concepts of biomechanics and summarizes them in nine principles of biomechanics. Fundamentals of Biomechanics concludes by showing how these principles can be used by movement professionals to improve human movement. Specific case studies are presented in physical education, coaching, strength and conditioning, and sports medicine.

Why yet another book on antennas ? The aim of the authors was to offer a didactic text appropriate for advanced graduate students, as well as a practical work for practicing engineers; to combine a solid theoretical treatment with a practical development which should allow the serious reader to undertake antenna design from fIrst principles. To accomplish these goals, the authors bring together their contributions from both industry and the academic environment. The developments of the various topics start at a level which is accessible to a novice in the speciality, but give a treatment which culminates at an advanced level. Another important feature of the book is its use of practical examples illustrating real engineering problems and designs. In most cases, the explanation is sufficient to grasp the principles of operation of the related equipment, and, where appropriate, the reader is referred to a relevant bibliography for more complete and hence more sophisticated methodologies of design. Of particular note are the chapters on specialist subjects such as antennas and signal theory, and signal processing antennas, showing how the antenna may be combined with signal processing techniques in imaging applications, in angular superresolution, and in adaptive arrays to suppress interference and jamming. Another example is the chapter on the use of polarimetry to enhance the wealth of information which may be extracted, for example, from radar signals.

The analysis and prediction of nonlinear behavior in electronic circuits has long been a topic of concern for analog circuit designers. The recent explosion of interest in portable electronics such as cellular telephones, cordless telephones and other applications has served to reinforce the importance of these issues. The need now often arises to predict and optimize the distortion performance of diverse electronic circuit configurations operating in the gigahertz frequency range, where nonlinear reactive effects often dominate. However, there have historically been few sources available from which design engineers could obtain information on analysis tech- niques suitable for tackling these important problems. I am sure that the analog circuit design community will thus welcome this work by Dr. Wambacq and Professor Sansen as a major contribution to the analog circuit design literature in the area of distortion analysis of electronic circuits. I am personally looking forward to hav- ing a copy readily available for reference when designing integrated circuits for communication systems.

The ?eld of ferroelectricity is a very active one. Many hundreds of papers in this ?eld are published each year and a large number of local and international conferences are held. We felt that it wouldbeappropriate at this time to publish a set of papers in a single journal describing some of the most active areas in the ?eld. The Journal of Materials Science agreed to publish a special issue on ferroelectricity. Accordingly, we sent requests for papers to a number of research groups around the world. It was diff?culttoselect a small number of groups from among the many excellent ones in the ?eld and we apologize to those not included. We received 24 manuscripts from groups in North America, Asia and Europe, each one of which was reviewed by two referees. The papers include reviews and current research, both experimental and theoretical. It was especially satisfying that the authors included not only established researchers but also manyyounger people who are destined to continue in the ?eld in the future. The special issue entitled "e;Frontiers of Ferroelectricity"e;appeared as Volume 41, Issue 1 of the Journal of Materials Science in January 2006. Because webelieved that many researchers and students would ?nd great value in having the complete set of papers on their bookshelf, we suggested to the editors of Springer that Frontiers of Ferroelectricity shouldbe published in book form.

Hepatitis Delta Virus is an up-to-date guide to hepatitis D virus (HDV), a human virus with a number of distinctive features. Each chapter of this book describes one of the broad aspects of HDV from virology to molecular biology, and from diagnosis to therapy.

This book contains the refereed proceedings of the Fourth Annual Mediterranean Ad Hoc Networking Workshop, Med-Hoc-Net 2005. After Sardinia (Italy), Mahdia (Tunisia), Bodrum (Turkey), the workshop took place this year on the beautiful island, fle de Porquerolles (France). The Med-Hoc-Net 2005 event consolidates the success of the previous editions of the workshop series. It aims to serve as a platform for researchers from academia, research, laboratories and industry from all over the world to share their ideas, views, results and experiences in the field of ad hoc networking. This year, 73 papers were submitted. We accepted 39 papers as full papers and 10 papers as short papers. Each full paper consists in 10 pages in these proceedings and was presented orally at the workshop whereas each short paper consists in 5 pages in these proceedings and was presented as a poster at the workshop. The selected papers were grouped according to the following topics: Physical and MAC layers, Power Consumption, Quality of Service, Routing, Connectivity, Optimization and Testbeds, Multicast and Broadcast, Clustering, Sensor networks, Auto-organization and Adaptation, Security and Evolution and finally Analysis. The accepted papers came from all over the world, mainly from diverse countries in Europe, but also from USA, Brazil, Tunisia, China and Taiiwan. We thank all authors for submitting their papers to Med-Hoc-Net 2005. For each paper, we provided two reviews (sometimes three reviews).

The 2nd edition emphasizes two areas not emphasized in the 1st edition: 1) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) magnets; 2) NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) magnets. Despite nearly 40 years of R and D on superconducting magnet technology, most areas, notably fusion and electric power applications, are still in the R and D stage. One exception is in the area of NMR and MRI. NMR magnets are very popular among chemists, biologists, genome scientists, and most of all, by drug manufacturers for drug discovery and development. MRI and NMR magnets have become the most successful application of superconducting magnet technology and this trend should continue. The 2nd edition will have new materials never treated formally in any other book of this kind. As with the 1st, most subjects will be presented through problem format to educate and train the designer.

Undergraduate courses in mathematics are commonly of two types. On the one hand are courses in subjects - such as linear algebra or real analysis - with which it is considered that every student of mathematics should be acquainted. On the other hand are courses given by lecturers in their own areas of specialization, which are intended to serve as a preparation for research. But after taking courses of only these two types, students might not perceive the sometimes surprising interrelationships and analogies between different branches of mathematics, and students who do not go on to become professional mathematicians might never gain a clear understanding of the nature and extent of mathematics. The two-volume Number Theory: An Introduction to Mathematics attempts to provide such an understanding of the nature and extent of mathematics. It is a modern introduction to the theory of numbers, emphasizing its connections with other branches of mathematics. Part A, which should be accessible to a first-year undergraduate, deals with elementary number theory. Part B is more advanced than the first and should give the reader some idea of the scope of mathematics today. The connecting theme is the theory of numbers, at first sight one of the most abstruse and irrelevant branches of mathematics. The deployment of surveillance systems has captured the interest of both the research and the industrial worlds in recent years. The aim of this effort is to increase security and safety in several application domains such as national security, home and bank safety, traffic monitoring and navigation, tourism, and military applications. The video surveillance systems currently in use share one feature: A human operator must monitor them at all times, thus limiting the number of cameras and the area under surveillance and increasing cost. A more advantageous system would have continuous active warning capabilities, able to alert security officials during or even before the happening of a crime. Existing automated surveillance systems can be classified into categories according to:The environment they are primarily designed to observe;The number of sensors that the automated surveillance system can handle;The mobility of sensor.The primary concern of this book is surveillance in an outdoor urban setting, where it is not possible for a single camera to observe the complete area of interest. Multiple cameras are required to observe such large environments. This book discusses and proposes techniques for development of an automated multi-camera surveillance system for outdoor environments, while identifying the important issues that a system needs to cope with in realistic surveillance scenarios. The goal of the research presented in this book is to build systems that can deal effectively with these realistic surveillance needs.

This is a book for engineers concerned with jitter: the e ects of noise visible in the time domain. The material presented will be helpful for work at both the system level and the circuit level: At the system level, the challenge is to describe, specify, and measure time domain uncertainty and when necessary, relate jitter to phase noise speci cations in the frequency domain. At the circuit level, the challenge is to design low noise circuitry within power, area, and process constraints so that ultimate performance meets system level requirements. Throughout the book concepts are presented in the context of an - gineering application requiring low jitter performance: the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) used in a phase-locked loop (PLL). Techniques are presented for circuit-level design of low jitter delay elements for use in ring oscillators, as well as relating the circuit-level characteristics to system-level performance. Although the emphasis is on time-domain (jitter) measures of oscillator p- formance, a simple method of translating performance to frequency domain (phase noise) measures is presented as well. Structure of this Book This book is divided into nine chapters. The diagram on the following page shows the relationship between material in each chapter as well as placement in the system-level vs. circuit-level design hierarchy. Wherever possible, - perimental veri cation is presented in the same chapter as the corresponding theoretical development, rather than being isolated in a separate chapter.
