This book is intended to guide practicing structural engineers familiar with ear- lier ACI building codes into more profitable routine designs with the ACI 1995 Building Code (ACI 318-95). Each new ACI Building Code expresses the latest knowledge of reinforced concrete in legal language for safe design application. Beginning in 1956 with the introduction of ultimate strength design, each new code offered better uti- lization of high-strength reinforcement and the compressive strength of the con- crete itself. Each new code thus permitted more economy as to construction material, but achieved it through more detailed and complicated design calcula- tions. In addition to competition requiring independent structural engineers to follow the latest code for economy, it created a professional obligation to fol- low the latest code for accepted levels of structural safety. The increasing complexity of codes has encouraged the use of computers for design and has stimulated the development of computer-based handbooks. Before computer software can be successfully used in the structural design of buildings, preliminary sizes of structural elements must be established from handbook tables, estimates, or experienced first guesses for input into the com- puter.

This book deals with the analysis and design of analog integrated circuits that form the basis of present-day communication systems. The material is intended to be a textbook for class use but should also be a valuable source of information for a practicing engineer. Both bipolar and MOS transistor circuits are analyzed and many numerical examples are used to illustrate the analysis and design techniques developed in this book. A set of problems is presented at the end of the book which covers the subject matter of the whole book. The book has originated out of a senior-level course on nonlinear, analog integrated circuits at the University of California at Berkeley. The material contained in this book has been taught by the first author for several years and the book has been class tested for six semesters. This along with feedback from the students is reflected in the organization and writing of the text. We expect that the students have had an introductory course in analog circuits so that they are familiar with some of the basic analysis techniques and also with the operating principles of the various semiconductor devices. Several important, basic circuits and concepts are reviewed as the subject matter is developed.

The partnership between industrial microbiologists, the industries they serve, and the microbes upon which they rely is (or should be) a close one. Brewers, bakers, and those involved in fermented dairy products come to mind as being leaders in this regard. By comparison, the wine industry, with the notable exception of a few technologically astute wineries world- wide, has historically given relatively little attention to this crucial step in processing. In the last two decades, this pattern has reversed itself and the rank and file of winemaking personnel have become more intensely inter- ested in the subject of wine microbiology. Several reasons come to mind that, in part, account for this. First, prior to the late seventies, much of the research in the area of wine microbiology (particularly, the malolactic fermentation) had yet to crystalize to yield a cohesive enough picture to be of value to the winemaker. During this period and into the early eighties, the U. S. wine industry began to utilize lower levels of sulfur dioxide than did their predecessors-the goal being to reduce input of chemicals and to minimize concerns from an increasingly health conscious population of consumers. Unfortunately, the practice had a significant downside; micro- organisms that had previously been controlled suddenly reemerged as sig- nificant threats to wine production.

SystemVerilog is a rich set of extensions to the IEEE 1364-2001 Verilog Hardware Description Language (Verilog HDL). These extensions address two major aspects of HDL-based design. First, modeling very large designs with concise, accurate, and intuitive code. Second, writing high-level test programs to efficiently and effectively verify these large designs.The first edition of this book addressed the first aspect of the SystemVerilog extensions to Verilog. Important modeling features were presented, such as two-state data types, enumerated types, user-degined types, structures, unions, and interfaces. Emphasis was placed on the proper usage of these enhancements for simulation and synthesis.SystemVerilog for Design, Second Edition has been extensively revised on a chapter by chapter basis to include the many text and example updates needed to reflect changes that were made between the first edition of this book was written and the finalization of the new standard. It is important that the book reflect these syntax and semantic changes to the SystemVerilog language.In addition, the second edition features a new chapter that explanis the SystemVerilog "e;packages"e;, a new appendix that summarizes the synthesis guidelines presented throughout the book, and all of the code examples have been updated to the final syntax and rerun using the latest version of the Synopsys, Mentor, and Cadance tools.

Selenium is one of the most intensively studied of the inorganic components of the diet. Ever since it was recognised in the 1950s that the element, which effects, was also an essential had until then been known only for its toxic nutrient, it has attracted growing interest in both human and agricultural fields of science. The literature on selenium is overwhelming. Possibly 100000 publica- tions dealing with the element have appeared since it was discovered in 1817. They continue to appear in numbers that make it difficult to keep up with even major aspects of the subject. Selenium specialisations have developed, not simply in agriculture and human studies, but also in molecular biology, metabolism, paediatric, enteral and parenteral nutrition, public health, toxicology and environmental health. All are developing their own literature and often an exclusiveness that results in loss of shared ideas and the fruitfullness of cross-boundary communication. This growth of knowledge and exclusiveness can place many readers at a disadvantage since it limits access to important new information. An appreciation of the role played by selenium in metabolism and health is far more than just an extra item in the intellectual database of modern food and health scientists. The first two editions of this title had a tremendous impact in neuroscience. Between the Second edition in 1989 and today, there has been an explosion of information in the field, including advances in molecular techniques, such as genomics and proteomics, which have become increasing important in neuroscience. A renaissance in fluorescence has occurred, driven by the development of new probes, new microscopes, live imagers, and computer processing. The introduction of new markers has enormously stimulated the field, moving it from tissue culture to neurophysiology to functional MRI techniques.

The first edition of this book, published in 1994, provided an exposition of the LAPW method and its relationship with other electronic structure approaches, especially Car-Parrinello based planewave methods. Since publication of that book, the LAPW method has been transformed from a specialized method used mostly by researchers running their own home made versions, to a popular, widely used method, where most users run standard codes to investigate ma- terials of interest to them. This is an exciting development because it opens the door to widespread use of first principles calculations in diverse areas of condensed matter physics and materials science. The positive impact of this on scientific progress is already becoming clear. Also as a result of this trend, the great majority of researchers using the LAPW method are no longer directly in- volved in the development of LAPW codes. Nonetheless, it remains important to understand how the LAPW method works, what its limitations are, and how its parameters determine the quahty and efficiency of calculations. System on Chip (SOC) having both digital and analog circuits has become increasingly prevalent in integrated circuit manufacturing industry. Electronic tests are classified as digital, analog and mixed signal. Current methodologies for the testing of digital circuits are well developed. In contrast, methodologies for the testing of analog circuits remain relatively underdeveloped due to the complex nature of analog signals. Compared to digital testing, analog testing lags far behind in methodologies and tools and therefore demands substantial research and development effort.Fault Diagnosis of Analog Integrated Circuits is a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate level students as well as practicing engineers. The objective of this book is to study the testing and fault diagnosis of analog and analog part of mixed signal circuits. A background in analog integrated circuit, artificial neural network is desirable but not essential.The text covers the testing and fault diagnosis of both bipolar and Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) circuits. Fault model of the devices in analog domain has been introduced in the text. The test stimulus generations are also discussed in details. Experimental verification of some state of the art techniques has also been presented in the book. It also contains problems that can be used as quiz or homework. This book enables the reader to test an analog circuit that is implemented either in bipolar or MOS technology.

OBJECTIVES The primary purpose of this book is to convey insight into why semiconductors are the way they are, either because of how their atoms bond with one another, because of mistakes in their structure, or because of how they are produced or processed. The approach is to explore both the science of how atoms interact and to connect the results to real materials properties, and to show the engineering concepts that can be used to produce or improve a semiconductor by design. Along with this I hope to show some applications for the topics under discussion so that one may see how the concepts are applied in the laboratory. The intended audience of this book is senior undergraduate students and graduate students early in their careers or with limited background in the subject. I intend this book to be equally useful to those teaching in electrical engineering, materials science, or even chemical engineering or physics curricula, although the book is written for a materials science audience primarily. To try to maintain the focus on materials concepts the details of many of the derivations and equations are left out of the book. Likewise I have not delved into the details of electrical engineering topics in as much detail as an electrical engineer might wish. It is assumed that students are familiar with these topics from earlier courses.
