Dadurch hat der Band mit den meisten BUchem Uber diesen Gegenstand wenig gemeinsam. Die Ublichen storungstheoretischen Rechnungen fehlen hier, denn mit die­ sen Methoden gelangt man nie zu einer echten Aussage. Auch wenn man diesen Reihen, die meistens nicht konvergieren, eine asymptotische Bedeutung zu­ billigt, laBt sich nicht abschiitzen, wie weit der Term n-ter Ordnung yom Resul­ tat entfemt ist. Da bei den nicht trivialen Problemen eine analytische Losung jenseits menschlicher Fahigkeiten liegt, muB man sich wohl oder Ubel mit exak­ ten Schranken zum Resultat begnUgen und kann nur trachten, fUr diese eine befriedigende Genauigkeit zu erreichen. Was die grundsatzlichen Fragen anlangt, so sind in den letzten zwei Jahr­ zehnten vielfach schone Erfolge erzielt worden. Ich denke insbesondere an die Ordnung von Zustanden (2.1), Eigenschaften der Entropie (2.2), nichtkommu­ tative Ergodentheorie (3.1), den Existenzbeweis der thermodynamischen Funk­ tionen (4.3), femer die mathematische Analyse der Thomas-Fermi-Theorie (4.1,2), welche zu einem Verstandnis der Stabilitat der Materie fiihrt. Es ist zu erwarten, daB manche der LUcken dieses Gedankengebaudes zuwachsen und etliche der zur Zeit noch unbefriedigend gel osten Fragen in nicht allzu femer Zukunft auch auf der Erfolgsliste stehen werden.
