Venous valves rank among the smallest and most delicate organs of the human and animal bodies - so why devote an entire book to them? In the pathogenesis of a number of widespread diseases, such as varicose veins or the post-thrombotic syndrome, venous valves are involved as the underlying cause or at least a factor contributory to the symptoms.

The development of various swarm techniques, such as the temperature variable selected ion flow tube or the selected ion flow drift tube, has provided the prerequisite for detailed investigations into ion molecule reactions both in binary and three body collisions, and the mechanisms of many reactions are now understood quite satisfactorily.

This book is a collection of critical reviews about a diverse group of virus families with two features in common: the stable repository of genetic information in each virus is RNA, and each virus modifies and appropriates a particular patch of the eukaryotic cell membrane system to complete its structure.

In 1977 I wrote a grant proposal in which I applied to study developmental patterns in enzymatic methylation of DNA in eukaryotes. The great skepticism about the significance of DNA methylation is based in part on the evidence that it is absent or very little used in Drosophila, a favorite organism for genetic and developmental studies.
