The first ICANNGA conference, devoted to biologically inspired computational paradigms, Neural Net works and Genetic Algorithms, was held in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1993. We have chosen the Liechtenstein palace under the Prague Castle as the conference site to enhance the traditionally good atmosphere of the meeting.

Wiener Asthma Forum 1998 hat an die ursprüngliche Tendenz der deutschsprachigen Publikation angeknüpft, als zur Erörterung des brisanten Themas des therapieresistenten Asthma vier österreichische und zwei deutsche Referenten aufgeboten wurden. R. W. Pahl (Wien) stellte die theoretischen Grundlagen der Steroid resistenz heraus, besonders im Hinblick auf deren Beziehung zu teil weise reversiblen molekularbiologischen Vorgängen. W. Heindl (Wien) ist zu danken, daß er uns die modernen und sehr spezifischen Methoden der mechanischen Atemhilfe beim schwerem Asthma nahebrachte. Frau Prof M. Eibl (Wien) vermochte es, unseren Blick auf die Möglichkeiten einer Therapie mit Immunglobulinen zu erweitern, die bereits vielversprechende Erfolge beim therapieresistenten Asthma aufweisen. M. Zach (Graz) erinnerte eindringlich an die Asthmakatastrophen im Kindes- und Aduleszentenalter, die sich um die generellen Fortschritte in der Asthmatherapie nicht zu kümmern scheinen. K. Kenn (Schönau am Königsee) wartete mit den hochinteressanten Varianten des "Pseudoasthma" auf, die einen nicht unerheblichen Anteil am sogenannten therapieresistenten Asthma bilden. Schließlich vermochte R. Wettengel (Bad Lippspringe) alle praxis relevanten Aspekte des schwer zu behandelnden Asthmatikers in seinem sehr differenzierten Referat zusammenzufassen. Der Dank der Veranstalter gilt der Subvention durch die Firma MSD. Der besondere Dank der Herausgeber gilt der Firma Boehringer Ingelheim, Wien, für die großzügige Unterstützung des veranstaltenden Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes für bronchoalveolare Lavage, wodurch die Drucklegung dieses Tagungsberichtes ermöglicht wurde. During the last couple of years we learned that infonnation and communication technologies have to be seen as key factors for the success in various industries.
In the first of these areas, there are several contributions on real-world model acquisition and display, on using image-based techniques for illumination and on efficient ways to parameterize and compress images or light fields, as well as on clever uses of texture and compositing hardware to achieve image warping and 3D surface textures.

The objectives of the pre sent workshop, which was supported by a grant from the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, were to take stock of the progress in the five years to 1990 and to extend the scope of the community to include soil deterioration (and dust release) and those beach processes which link with aeolian activity on the coast.

Bereits im Energieplan, den das Bundesministerium für Handel, Gewerbe und Industrie im März 1975 veröffentlicht hat, wurde bei den Möglichkeiten für die Substitution von Energieträgern auf die Elektrotraktion hingewiesen. So heißt es dort im Punkt 18. 2. 3. 3 u. a. : "Im Straßenverkehr in Ballungszentren empfiehlt sich ein erweiterter Ein satz der Elektrotraktion, dem vorläufig durch das ungünstig hohe Lei stungsgewicht der Batterien gewisse Grenzen, vor allem hinsichtlich der Reichweite der Fahrzeuge, gesetzt sind. Verbesserungen werden hier durch die Entwicklung der Zink-Chlorbatterien und später durch den Ein satz von Akkumulatoren mit nicht-wässrigen Elektrolyten erhofft. Nach dem derzeitigen Stand ist nicht anzunehmen, daß der Verbrennungsmotor in den Städten vollkommen substituiert werden kann. Lediglich ein Teil wird auf Elektrotraktion umgestellt werden können . . . . Die Auswirkungen eines erweiterten Einsatzes der Elektrotraktion auf den Ausbau der Er zeugungs-und insbesondere der Verteilungsanlagen für elektrische Energie sind noch eingehend zu prüfen. " Diese Feststellungen stützten sich vornehmlich auf die in Fachpublikatio nen enthaltenen Angaben über Stand und Aussichten der Batterieentwicklung. Diese Angaben waren jedoch teilweise widersprüchlich und in vieler Hin sicht mangelhaft. So wurde es als ein Gebot empfunden, dem Mangel abzuhel fen und die Einschätzung der Chancen der Elektrotraktion auf eine sicherere Basis zu stellen. In dankenswerter Weise hat zunächst das Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung durch die Einsetzung eines Projektteams "Elektrochemische Energiespeicherung" eine Bestandsaufnahme nationaler und internationaler Forschungen und Entwicklungen von elektrochemischen Ener giespeicherndurchgeführt, deren Ergebnisse von diesem Ressort im Jahr 1976 veröffentlicht wurden.

The possible forms of the second law of thermodynamics are discussed within the frame work ofaxiomatic thermodynamics.
