    Autografen, die handschriftlichen Spuren, die ein Mensch hinterlassen hat, sind als unmittelbare Zeitzeugen aussagekräftige biografische Quellen. Grafologen und Psychologen extrahieren allein aus einer Unterschrift mitunter ganze Persönlichkeitsprofile, und auch der Laie schaut gerne mit Neugier und detektivischem Ehrgeiz auf das Schriftbild, bisweilen auch die Klaue (muss ein Genie sein!) prominenter Persönlichkeiten. Der brasilianische Schriftsteller, Verleger und Sammler Pedro Corrêa do Lago hält zwar nicht viel von der Grafologie, sammelt aber Autografen seit seiner Jugend mit einer Besessenheit, die ihm selbst nicht ganz geheuer ist: "Eigentlich müsste ich in einer Zwangsjacke stecken!" Im Laufe eines knappen halben Jahrhunderts hat er eine Sammlung zusammengetragen, die alle Dimensionen sprengt - sie umfasst rund 100.000 Dokumente: Briefe, Notizen, Tagebuchseiten, signierte Fotografien, Partituren, Manuskripte, Widmungsexemplare und andere handschriftliche Zeugnisse, von einem mittelalterlichen Pergament, das vier Päpste unterzeichneten, bis zu einer Buchwidmung inklusive Daumenabdruck von Stephen Hawking aus dem Jahre 2006. Die für diesen Band ausgewählten 140 Dokumente aus fast 900 Jahren stammen von Menschen aus Politik, Literatur, Kunst, Philosophie, Film, Musik und Wissenschaft, die ihren Platz im Who's Who der Geschichte behauptet haben und nicht im Meer des Vergessens untergegangen sind: Briefe von Lucrezia Borgia, Vincent van Gogh, Franz Kafka und Emily Dickinson, kommentierte Skizzen von Michelangelo, Jean Cocteau, Henri Matisse und Jackson Pollock, signierte Fotografien von Oscar Wilde, Rasputin, Emiliano Zapata, Sun Yat-sen, Josephine Baker und Allen Ginsberg, Handschriften von Giacomo Puccini, Jorge Luis Borges und Marcel Proust und viele Zeitzeugnisse mehr, darunter auch ein signierter Handabdruck von Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Zauber der Schrift bietet spannende, manchmal anrührende und mitunter verblüffende Einblicke in das Tun und Treiben prominenter Persönlichkeiten der westlichen Kultur und öffnet über den persönlichen Schriftzug im Idealfall einen Zugang zu einer privaten, intimen Welt, die uns sonst verborgen bliebe.
