This delightful book, abundantly illustrated, reviews the historic badges and devise of many families and organisations and includes a table in the back listing the main devices and mottoes. Devices and badges form a branch of heraldic study rarely appreciated and the author offers her opinions on the origins of these symbols along with archaeological, mythical and historical information. The book is in three parts with part one dealing with devices, part two deals with badges and part three deals with "War Cries,". It includes biographical information, genealogical information, as well as a description of the arms, crest, and motto. Other information listed include clubs and societies the individual belonged to, and the persons' residences along with a list of Royal Warrant Holders. 358 pages and numerous images.

First published in 1900. A detailed history of the baronetage.Francis William Pixley was an English accountant, barrister and author. Pixley was instrumental in the efforts made to form a Roll of Baronets, which is now kept at the Home Office, and was Registrar of the Standing Council of the Baronetage. He was at one-time lieutenant-colonel commanding the 1st Cadet Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was a Knight of Justice and Receiver-General of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England, a member of the City Lieutenancy, and Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. for Buckinghamshire.
