The 1819 term of the Supreme Court stands preeminent in John Marshall's chief justiceship as the year of three major constitutional pronouncements. This volume, covering 1814 to 1819, reproduces these and other important Marshall opinions given in the Supreme Court and the U.S. Circuit Court for Virginia.

Collected here are correspondence, papers, and legal documents - including selected judicial opinions - of American jurist John Marshall. The documents presented in these volumes - with introductory material and notes - shed light not only on Marshall's life and thought but on the evolution of American jurisprudence as well.

Introduces some of the major substantive themes in environmental law and gives students insight and experience with critical thinking about these themes. Isaac Johnson was born in in 1844. His father was a white farmer and his mother an enslaved African from Madagascar. After a succession of owners and two failed escape attempts, Johnson finally achieved freedom during the Civil War. Published in 1901, Slavery Days in Old Kentucky, was written to argue against what Johnson saw as a romanticized nostalgia for slavery.

Published in 1921, The History of the Negro Church traces the construction of the black church in America from colonial times through the early years of the twentieth century. The book unfolds a series of biographical sketches of male church leaders through the decades, and offers a broad critique of church experience.

A Sketch of the Life of Okah Tubbee, published in 1852, begins with testimonials regarding Okah Tubbee's flute-playing abilities and with a lightly edited version of Lewis Allen's "Essay Upon the Indian Character" from the earlier edition of Tubbee's narrative, as well as the so-called Indian Covenant "between the Six Nations and the Choctaws." Tubbee's narrative begins with brief recollections of his father and Tubbee's childhood with his "unnatural mother." Tubbee's visit to Choctaw Indians in Alexandria is described before his apprenticeship to the cruel blacksmith Mr. Russell, and his subsequent apprenticeship to Dr. A.P. Merrill, leading to his desire to become an "Indian Doctor." Tubbee's details his travels and voyages by steamboat, first as a musician with the Louisiana Volunteers and later on his own. Towards the end of his narrative, Tubbee expresses a desire to let his wife, Laah Ceil, speak for herself. In this final, additional section, Laah Ceil describes her birth, her education, her Christian convictions, and the manner in which she met and married Tubbee. She also recounts their travels together and their advocacy "in behalf of the Indians" and against forced relocation. The Sketch concludes with an original poem by Laah Ceil and a collection of letters, documents, and vouchers attesting to Okah Tubbee's identity and his medical skill.A DOCSOUTH BOOK. From the fall of 1975 to the spring of 1977, as Grandin, a public school in North Carolina, was desegregating, four anthropologists carried out an ethnographic study of the fifth and sixth grade classes. Their research highlighted the interactional, cultural, and institutional processes of making race and race relations in the school.

The abolition of judicial torture was one of the most consequential issues debated in eighteenth century continental Europe. Home Away from Home: Immigrant Narratives, Domesticity, and Coloniality in Contemporary Spanish Culture examines ideological, emotional, economic, and cultural phenomena brought about by migration through readings of works of literature and film featuring domestic workers. In the past thirty years, Spain has experienced a massive increase in immigration. Since the 1990s, immigrants have been increasingly female, as bilateral trade agreements, migration quotas, and immigration policies between Spain and its former colonies (including the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, and the Philippines) have created jobs for foreign women in the domestic service sector. These migrations reveal that colonial histories continue to be structuring elements of Spanish national culture, even in a democratic era in which its former colonies are now independent. Migration has also transformed the demographic composition of Spain and has created complex new social relations around the axes of gender, race, and nationality. Representations of migrant domestic workers provide critical responses to immigration and its feminization, alongside profound engagements with how the Spanish nation has changed since the end of the Franco era in 1975. Throughout Home Away from Home, readings of works of literature and film show that texts concerning the transnational nature of domestic work uniquely provide a nuanced account of the cultural shifts occurring in late twentieth- through twenty-first-century Spain.
