The time frame is the early 1970's. RJ is just out of high school when he gets a low draft number. Not willing to take any chances he enlists in the US Airforce. He decides to go for adventure and rapid advancement so he opts for a career field called "Forward Air Controller," or Combat Controller.While on leave just before his first assignment to SE Asia he's enjoying civilian life for a few days prior to his departure. In a chance encounter at a casual restaurant; he meets a young lady that he spontaneously nicknames, 'Cotton Top' because of her beautiful white hair. Over the next few days, they fall madly in love with each other.
