Thirty years ago, all the La Unión mines closed. The metals didn't run out, but the ever-changing market values and the health problems of the miners were part of the reason that the industry died. This is by no means the whole story. The whole history involves many minor closedowns, fluctuations in the price of metals, other factors like War and, finally, issues of contamination. There are still vast quarries, but these seem to be used, largely, for building stone or dumping. The landscape is littered with ruined mining buildings and thousands of well-like ventilation shafts. 265 Mines are indexed, over 140 collectible minerals are covered, with over 50 of the commonest illustrated in colour. "Washing Amethysts in the Bidet" is more than a comprehensive look at the huge range of minerals that can be collected in this fascinating area in Murcia it also reveals where they can found and what the terrain is like. Fiona has filled the book with her own experiences, real stories about the abandoned mines, the people she has met on the way and fascinating historical anecdotes about the places she visited whilst exploring. This is more than a book about collecting geological specimens, although that aspect is well covered. It is a book about people, mining communities and stories of a way of life that is now gone.

'Realistic Business Forecasting' bridges the gap between the academic methodology of forecasting and the practical application of these techniques in any business. There are plenty of books which cover topics of business strategy, such as an assessment of political and legal influences on an industry (a PEST analysis) or an analysis of the market and competitors. Similarly, people wishing to find books on the topic of forecasting will find an abundance of books which go into detail on a wide array of techniques. What Adam felt was missing was a text which blended these two issues; for example, once a firm has determined that a country's economy is likely to weaken and its currency is expected to decline, how can this information be quantified and incorporated into a practical business strategy? In business, a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis is not an academic exercise, it is a means to build on a company's strengths, relative to its competitors. It is conducted to eliminate (or at least mitigate) relative weaknesses and assess factors in the macro-environment which the firm can use to its advantage, or against which it can build defences. The missing link is how all these factors are related to forecasting and this book provides that link.A critical part of any project is whether it is economically viable, but too many organisations leave the forecasting element as an afterthought. Adam Simmons has combined his commercial and academic experience to overcome this problem. He has created a practical and accessible guide for any business large or small, in any sector, to help them build their strategies, in advance, based on 'Realistic Business Forecasting'.

  • - A Theory of Time
    von Ken Hughes
    39,00 €

Theoretical physics is driven by the ideas of the mathematical physicist and the sometimes, subjective interpretations of the mathematics of Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics. Yet today, we are still faced with many paradoxes and conundrums in our attempts to understand the laws of nature. This visionary book stands back from the grindstone of mainstream physics and presents a down to earth, Engineer's view of Special and General Relativity, together with an insightful understanding of the physical nature of time that affects our view of the quantum world. The author adheres strictly to causality throughout his deductive reasoning and, with just a little mathematics, arrives at an intuitive concept of the Grand Unification, Einstein's unfinished, unified field theory. The field provides a common source of energy for all processes (including gravitation), all matter from the beginning of the universe itself.Ken Hughes demonstrates why we are living in a binary universe and his theory offers fascinating explanations for many present-day conundrums in physics.Updated with even more explanations, examples and supporting research, this second edition of The Binary Universe revisits the conclusion of the first edition, with more detail and additional information.Contents include: Causality of gravitation, Wavelike time, Quantum time, Binary time, Entanglement and the quantum world. The Binary Universe opens up a radical new approach to Space and the universe that surrounds us.

  • - A Caffeinated Photo-Journal
von Paul Kelly & Fred Shively
    44,00 €

Cafés in the major European conurbations - from Amsterdam to Budapest, Paris to Milan, Barcelona to Vienna - have been well celebrated and documented. The Balkan countries, however, have been largely ignored. In Balkan Caffeination Paul Kelly and Fred Shively go off the beaten track to examine and document the café culture of four Balkan countries - Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.Getting under the skin of café culture in the Balkans, through its neighbourhood joints and their denizens, Paul and Fred hear the stories from, and of, the people who dispense this most aromatic and social beverage. They also trace the evolution of 'café society' in the Balkans; from tiny, traditional coffee shops and grand cafés, to chic, sleek, new venues housing an artisanal third wave of coffee as cult and culture. As for the images, Paul and Fred endeavoured to capture what is real. Not just the art nouveau/art deco splendour of the grand cafes, not the usual sidewalk-umbrella-beautiful-people snaps, but telling portraits of human faces and interaction.Paul Kelly and Fred Shively have been professional communicators, sometimes photographers, always café/coffee lovers and insatiable travellers/flaneurs for more years than many of you have had... hot drinks.

Anyone who likes Mac Black's "Please call me Derek" (and the rest in the series covering his grown-up adventures) will enjoy introducing younger friends and family to his new series, "Sweaty and Pals". 'Sweaty and Pals Again' continues Derek's exploits with his gang in the eighties, with quirky illustrations (by Mac Black), the stories build on Derek's ability to find disasters and get himself into one mess after another.Sweaty's tales are about little kids enjoying life, before smartphones and computer games came along. Of course, it is just possible - if you are older than five - that you did all these things yourself…Mac has embraced writing for younger readers with the same quirky clean humour that permeates his YA series. From Sweaty's days at school, we meet some of the wonderful characters who pepper the adult books, subtly dealing with issues around prejudice, being different, living with the elderly, dealing with life's issues - but in a gentle, no-nonsense way that exposes the social discrimination and values that we took for granted, in those days, but we would not accept, today. This makes these stories a perfect springboard for class discussions about daily life for children thirty years ago compared with now.
