Traditional treatments of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have been designed to contain a neurobiological delay that renders individuals less capable of resisting shortsighted behaviors. In seventeenth-century France, Madame Guyon wrote about the concept of "pure love." "Love pure and holy, is a deathless fire," she wrote, and is "ethereal fare." Her popular books spread quickly through Europe and the New World, drawing the attention of Louis XIV and the court at Versailles. The Inquisition attacked her writing and concepts, resulting in her decade long incarceration, including years in the Bastille. Archbishop Fénelon defended Guyon while the leading cleric, Bishop Bossuet, demanded that the Vatican condemn Fénelon and Guyon as heretics. A contemporaneous historian wrote a history of the "Great Conflict" between Guyon, Bossuet, Fénelon, and the Vatican entitled Supplement to the Life of Madame Guyon, which is regarded as having been written in the eighteenth-century. Professor Nancy C. James''s translation of this manuscript from the Bodleian Library at Oxford University is featured in this book, coupled with an analysis of the powerful theology of Guyon that influenced both the growth of the Quakers and Romanticism. This work is a basic introduction to aesthetics and covers the major theories of art, while referring to various filmic examples to illustrate the complex ideas related to the philosophy of art. In addition, it addresses film itself as an art form, analyzes film studies, and discusses film''s ambiguous cultural/artistic position. The overarching theme of the book is the most basic aesthetic question: What is art? That eternal and critical question is explored by addressing representation, formalism, and expressivism, three classic aesthetic theories. Film, Art, and Filmart begins by focusing on Plato, including a look at the issue of censorship as it is raised in his Republic. Then formalism is discussed via Kant, and Roger Fry''s and Clive Bell''s theory of Significant Form. Expressivism is dealt with by utilizing views by Leo Tolstoy and R.G. Collingwood. Contemporary issues in aesthetics are illuminated with George Dickie''s theory of art, while also examining the cognitive theories of Nelson Goodman and Martha Nussbaum. The market women of India are poor, female, and untouchable (Dalit), all highly stigmatized statuses. They eek out a living for themselves and their children by doing "penny capitalism." Traditionally, the Hindu cosmology of hierarchy and stasis has circumscribed women''s and Dalits'' lives with notions of purity and pollution. But, since the advent of nineteenth century Protestant missions, a social reform movement has challenged traditional forms of debasement and exploitation. Still, Dalit communities are responding to unprecedented political opportunities by taking a socially conservative path. They are attempting to demonstrate their value by emulating higher caste practices. One of these practices is the giving of dowry. So, market women are painfully saving large amounts of money to marry off their daughters with dowries, thereby reinforcing Hindu values. Christianity advocates an ethic based on Jesus'' two commandments, love God and love your neighbor as yourself. That ethic has influenced market women''s lives more than they know through the construction of the Indian political arena. However, counter-forces are also evident in the public culture. Fundamentalist Hinduism, responding in part to the threat of global capitalism, is actively resisting these reforms and calling all Indians to a national identity that amalgamates race, language, and territory with Hinduism. In such a context, market women''s conservative response to stigmatization is counterproductive to their own interests. A more revolutionary response, one based on the Christian ethic of love, would offer them unprecedented freedom and dignity. This work explores changes in the treatment of the marginalized in Indian society and relates them to contemporary global issues.

This work explores the psychoanalytic constructs of transference and countertransference and explains how structures and activities in the human brain account for them. It identifies major transferential and countertransferential themes and ways in which displaced material is most likely to manifest. It provides clinicians with several management strategies, including formulating and using interpretations in a way that does not threaten clients. These Are Our Stories is a collection of women''s stories, thoughts, and poems about the domestic abuse they have experienced throughout their lives. Transcribed directly from Jan Rosenberg''s interviews with eleven women in the Florida panhandle, their histories embody the epidemic of domestic violence in America. The eleven survivors are lower to middle class women of various ethnic orientations, and range in age from their late twenties to mid-sixties. The survivors'' stories are clarified with the use of diagrams from The Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (DAIP), and examined as the women re-build their lives hours and days at a time. These Are Our Stories provides two resource guides following the women''s interviews. The first guide is adapted for use in north Florida to assist an abused woman in identifying her situation using these eleven women''s stories as a thread. The second resource is a brief bibliography of literature and resources for domestic violence victims that can be used throughout the U.S.

This volume examines one of the most controversial stories in the BibleΓÇöthe akedah, or sacrifice of Isaac recounted in the 22nd chapter of Genesis. Today, more than three thousand years later, the story continues to evoke controversy. It has had an impact on Judaism, Christianity and IslamΓÇöeach clinging to different interpretations. Even among adherents of a common faith, interpretations of the passage differ to such extremes that it can be used to justify unthinkable behavior ranging from infanticide, mass murder, and suicide bombings. Abraham''s actions have generated a sacrificial rhetoric that continues to exert a powerful influence on modern society. The rhetoric of sacrifice was born when the first person used the story of akedah to inspire another to sacrifice willingly on their behalf. Since then, a multitude of religious leaders and religious imposters have used the rhetoric of sacrifice to do their bidding. The akedah has proven itself as a tool that placed in the wrong hands can be used to commit unthinkable acts.

This work features an in-depth quantitative and qualitative set of studies on family issues in early adulthood among young adults born in Sweden of Swedish, Polish, and Turkish origins. The results are analyzed to explore the educational attainment of Swedish young adults of different origins, their transitions to marriage and cohabitation, inter-ethnic partnering, and the balance between work and family. The quantitative analyses are further enhanced by anthropologists'' examinations of transitions to adulthood by young men and women. These analyses add depth to the survey findings, and are the basis for creating a new understanding of the diversity among these communities in Sweden. This integrated volume represents the work of an interdisciplinary team of demographers, sociologists, and anthropologists whose findings are compared to immigration and family transitions in Sweden, Norway, and other similar communities throughout Europe.
