Marta Tomczok presents all Polish postmodern novels about the Holocaust, starting with "The First Splendor" by Leopold Buczkowski and ending with "The Suspected Dybbuk" by Andrzej Bart. She also presents their rich relationships with selected foreign-language prose, which intensified especially at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The culmination of the entire trend is a discussion around two novels: "Tworki" by Marek Bienczyk and "Fly Trap Factory" by Andrzej Bart, which reveals the aestheticizing and post-memorial profile of Polish postmodernization and its advantage over the historiosophical trend. This monograph is not only the first such collection of post-Holocaust postmodern novels, but also the first comprehensive study of postmodernism in the literature about the Holocaust, which, thanks to comparative analysis, tries to analyze and explain the circumstances of the appearance and later disappearance of this trend from cultural landscape of the world and Poland.

Diese L'Homme-Ausgabe widmet sich der Frauen- und Geschlechtergeschichte in der Ukraine von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die jüngste Gegenwart und möchte dazu beitragen, dass die innovativen Forschungen ukrainischer Kolleg*innen als integraler Bestandteil der europäischen Historiografie wahrgenommen werden. Dies erscheint in Zeiten des Krieges nicht nur wissenschaftlich, sondern auch geschichtspolitisch wichtiger denn je. It aims at a better perception of the innovative research of Ukrainian colleagues as an integral part of European historiography. In times of war, this seems more important than ever, not only in regard to scientific exchange but also in its relevance for a better understanding of Ukraine in terms of politics of history. Ukraine is the largest country in Europe in terms of area, it is an integral part of a European history of entanglements and transfers, and at the same time still a blank spot on the historiographical map of Western publics. This also applies to the lively research on gender history, which is received too little or only with great delay in the West.

Anlässlich des 125. Geburtstages Erich Maria Remarques am 22. Juni 2023 widmet sich dieser Band einzelnen Aspekten der Werke und des Wirkens des Autors. Wunderbares, Idyllisches und der Krieg in verschiedenen Romanen werden dabei ebenso betrachtet wie verschiedene Formen des sich Erinnerns. Behandelt wird auch die Frage nach der Aktualität der Bücherverbrennung von 1933 neunzig Jahre danach - und was die Ermordung von Remarques Schwester Elfriede Scholz mit uns heute zu tun hat. Ergänzt werden die Beiträge zu Remarque durch einen Aufsatz zur englischen und deutschen Lyrik des Ersten Weltkrieges sowie einige Rezensionen.On the occasion of Erich Maria Remarque's 125th birthday on June 22nd 2023 the present volume commits itself with the works and life of the author. Beautiful and idyllic aspects, the war in various novels as well as different forms of remembrance are being examined. The volume also questions the current interest in the burning of books of 1933 after ninety years. Additionally, it explores how the execution of Remarque's sister Elfriede Scholz affects us today. Furthermore, an essay of both English and German lyric of World War I as well as several recensions are included.

Der Band trägt durch Übersetzungen der Lyrik Bertolt Brechts dazu bei, sein Werk in Polen noch bekannter zu machen und schließt überdies eine Forschungslücke. Durch literatur- und sprachwissenschaftlich untermauerte Analysen, die zum Teil auf einer digital orientierten Übersetzungswissenschaft basieren, wird Brechts Lyrik in angemessener Weise für das moderne Zeitalter rezipierbar gemacht. Dies ist nichts anderes als eine konsequente Umsetzung und Weiterführung der eigenen Ideen und Absichten Brechts, der sich wie kaum ein anderer seiner Zeitgenossen die damaligen neuen Medien konsequent zunutze gemacht und sogar eine eigene Medientheorie entwickelt hat. Die Grundlage für die neuen Übersetzungen der Werke Bertolt Brechts ist das Konzept eines optimalen Übersetzungsmodells von Piotr Sulikowski.Through translations of Bertolt Brecht's poetry, the book contributes to making his work even better known in Poland and, moreover, fills a research gap. Through analyses underpinned by literary and linguistic studies, which are partly based on digitally oriented translation studies, Brecht's poetry is made appropriately receptive for the modern Digital Age. This is nothing other than a consistent implementation and continuation of Brecht's own ideas and intentions, who, more than almost any other of his contemporaries, consistently made use of the new media of the time and even developed his own media theory. The basis for the new translations of Bertolt Brecht's works is the concept of the optimal translation model by Piotr Sulikowski.

Scheitern ist eine menschliche Grunderfahrung, und auch das Erzählen vom Scheitern ist ein überzeitliches Phänomen. Die vorliegenden Beiträge untersuchen die narrative Auseinandersetzung mit dem Scheitern in unterschiedlichen literarischen und historiographischen Genres der Vormoderne und zeigen, welche Funktionen, Ziele und möglichen Sinnstiftungen damit verbunden sind. Gefragt wird außerdem nach Formen der Bewältigung durch Strategien der Erklärung, Abwehr oder Umdeutung, wobei transzendenten Mustern ein besonderer Stellenwert zukommt. Zudem wird das Scheitern in seinen rhetorischen Inszenierungen und seinen poetologischen Dimensionen betrachtet. Das Erzählen vom Scheitern erweist sich als produktives Moment der Sinnstiftung und als eine Reflexionsfigur mit weitreichender kultureller Signifikanz.Failure is a fundamental human experience, and narrating failure is also a phenomenon that transcends time. The contributions in this volume examine the narrative engagement with failure in various literary and historiographical genres of the pre-modern period and show what functions, aims and possible meanings are associated with it. They also investigate ways of coping with failure through strategies of explanation, repulse, or reinterpretation, with a special focus on transcendental patterns. Failure is also examined in its rhetorical stagings and its poetological dimensions. The narrative of failure proves to be a productive moment of meaning-making and a figure of reflection with far-reaching cultural significance.

Staatsrepräsentation bedient sich häufig musikalischer Elemente. Der Band thematisiert diese spezifische Koppelung von Musik und Politik mit besonderem Akzent auf dem Aufführungscharakter staatlicher Veranstaltungen. Musik stiftet mehrfach Sinn: durch ihre Präsenz in der Performanz und durch ein historisch gewachsenes, politisch konnotiertes Repertoire. Während Letzteres bereits politologische und musikologische Forschungstraditionen begründet hat, ist das Performative bislang eher rudimentär beleuchtet worden. Der Band schließt diese Lücke, indem er den Staat als musikalischen Akteur ins Zentrum rückt. Theoretische Ansätze treten neben interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Perspektiven, ergänzt durch Erfahrungsberichte von Entscheidungsträger*innen aus Politik und Verwaltung, u. a. dem Diplomatischen Dienst. Die wissenschaftliche Kommentierung dieser Darstellungen von Zeitzeug*innen eröffnet weitere Forschungsfelder.The representation of a state is often combined with musical elements. This book explores the specific relationship between music and politics. A special focus reveals some performance character within state ceremonies and events, and the significance of music in creating meaning through its presence by performances and its politically charged repertoire. While previous musicological and politological research has focused on that, this volume seeks to fill a current gap by examining the performative nature of music in state events. Theoretical approaches are combined with interdisciplinary perspectives, including inside perspectives of decision-makers in politics, administration, and the diplomatic service. Scholarly commentary on these eyewitness' memories opens up further areas of research.

Die Rechtsextremismusforschung hat in Österreich eine lange Tradition. Dennoch fehlen zu vielen AkteurInnen und Netzwerken, Diskursen und Praktiken der extremen Rechten in Österreich seit 1945 wissenschaftliche Studien. Ausgehend von der Überzeugung, dass gerade das Fach Zeitgeschichte mit dem Blick für längere Zeiträume sowohl ideologische Kontinuitäten und langfristig wirksame Strukturen als auch Veränderungen und Transformationen des österreichischen Rechtsextremismus seit 1945 aufzeigen kann, möchte das vorliegende Themenheft der zeithistorischen Rechtsextremismusforschung in Österreich neue Impulse geben. Die Beiträge beleuchten den "klassischen" Rechtsextremismus nach 1945, seine (vergeblichen) Anpassungsversuche, die transnationale Vernetzung der extremen Rechten am Beispiel des Südtirol-Terrorismus sowie Transformationsprozesse im Bereich rechtsextremer Medien. Außerdem wird untersucht, wann und wie sich österreichische SozialwissenschaftlerInnen und HistorikerInnen in den letzten Jahrzehnten mit dem Phänomen Rechtsextremismus auseinandergesetzt haben und welche unterschiedlichen Konzepte, Terminologien und Methoden sie dabei verwendeten.Research on right-wing extremism has a long tradition in Austria. However, there is a lack of academic research on numerous actors, networks, discourses, and practices of the extreme right in Austria since 1945. Convinced that contemporary history in particular with its perspective on longer time periods can unveil not only ideological continuities but also long-term efficient structures as well as changes and transformations in Austrian right-wing extremism since 1945, this special issue aims to give new impetus to contemporary research. The contributions explore "traditional" right-wing extremism after 1945, its (unsuccessful) adaption attempts, the transnational networking of the extreme right using the example of South Tyrolean terrorism and transformation processes in right-wing extremist media. Furthermore, the issue will also explore when and how Austrian social scholars and historians dealt with the phenomenon of right-wing extremism in recent decades and what different concepts, terminologies and methods they used.

This book presents numerous instruments which create postmortal succession on the example of Polish law. Alongside the solution in inheritance law, one may apply specific inheritance (e.g. of agricultural farms) that benefits only such heirs who meet additional requirements, as well as undertake legal acts that allow to decide on heritability (or non-heritability) character of rights and duties (e.g. within the contract of mandate or company contracts). There are also numerous legislative instruments that allow for succession otherwise than by inheritance so that particular persons (and not heirs) benefit after the decedent. Such instruments include regulations of civil law but also e.g. banking law, social insurance law which are often comparable with nonprobate instruments (or willsubstitutes) under American law or German Sonderrechtsnachfolge.

Anhand der Schlacht am Morgarten (1315) sowie der Schlachten von Gammelsdorf (1313), Mühldorf (1322) und Sempach (1389) untersucht Helen Wiedmaier exemplarisch, wie in der spätmittelalterlichen Historiographie Schlachten beschrieben und Männer als Kämpfer konstruiert wurden. Dafür werden die Schlachtenschilderungen in den Chroniken als Erzählungen verstanden und mittels narratologischer Analyseinstrumente untersucht. Die gewählten Schlachten bieten sich für eine solche Untersuchung aufgrund ihrer reichhaltigen Überlieferung an, da in allen Fällen die Perspektive der Sieger und Besiegten weitergegeben wurde, was die Möglichkeit bietet, unterschiedliche Intentionen und deren Umsetzung als Erzählungen zu untersuchen und zu vergleichen.In this book, Helen Wiedmaier analyses the depiction of men as fighters in written sources from the 14th and early 15th century which depict the battles at Gammelsdorf (1313), Morgarten (1315), Mühldorf (1322) and Sempach (1389). For this purpose, she used methods from narratological theories and considered different levels of meaning. Aside from including the point of view of the different authors and their audience, Wiedmaier also created categories such as 'individual fighter' or 'combatants operating in groups' to be able to analyse the different narrations about fighters. The existing sources provide the perspective of both the winning and the forfeiting parties. This makes it possible to analyse the different intentions of the writers and to compare their different depictions of men as fighters.

Die Konstruktionsgrammatik gehört als theoretisches Paradigma mittlerweile auch in der Romanistik zum "state of the art". Doch stellt die Beschreibung vieler sprachlicher Phänomene auch die Konstruktionsgrammatik in der Praxis immer wieder vor Probleme. Vor allem die Umfelder des Sprechens geraten dabei in den Fokus. Dies gilt einerseits für die Berücksichtigung des Kontextes sprachlicher Ausdrücke in Theorie und Praxis. Andererseits stellt die Beschreibung kommunikativer Gattungen (oder "speech genres") im Sinne von Konstruktionen die Theorie vor neue Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes widmen sich diesen Themen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und bieten Fallstudien zu zahlreichen interessanten Sprachphänomenen der romanischen Sprachen sowie des Englischen.Construction Grammar has now become an established theoretical paradigm within Romance linguistics, forming part of the current "state of the art." Nevertheless, the description of linguistic phenomena frequently presents challenges for its practical application. Above all, the contexts of speech come into focus in this regard. This applies, on the one hand, to the consideration of the usage contexts of linguistic expressions in both theory and practice. On the other hand, the description of communicative genres (or "speech genres") in terms of constructions introduces the theory to a set of new challenges. The contributions to this volume address these topics from various perspectives and provide case studies on numerous interesting language phenomena in Romance languages as well as in English.

Verschiedene Einflussfaktoren (z. B. erhöhte Konsolidierungstendenzen aufgrund eines erhöhten Wettbewerbsdrucks oder fehlende familieninterne Nachfolgeregelungen) führen dazu, dass sich inzwischen auch akquisitionsunerfahrene Familienunternehmen vermehrt mit anorganischen Wachstumsmöglichkeiten auseinandersetzen. Akquisitions- und Integrationsprozesse von und durch mittelständische Familienunternehmen sind dabei extrem voraussetzungsreich, da Führungsprozesse in diesem Organisationstypus typischerweise eher auf die Beziehung zwischen Personen als auf transparent geplante Ablaufprozesse ausgerichtet sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund führt die vorliegende Arbeit die Besonderheiten in den Führungsprozessen von mittelständischen Familienunternehmen aus und leitet anschließend daraus ab, welche spezifischen Herausforderungen sich für Akquisitions- und Integrationsprozesse durch die Partizipation von dieser Unternehmen ergeben.Various influencing factors (e.g. increased consolidation tendencies due to greater competitive pressure or the lack of succession arrangements within the family) mean that even family businesses with no experience of acquisitions are now increasingly looking at inorganic growth opportunities. Acquisition and integration processes of and by medium-sized family businesses are extremely prerequisite-rich, since management processes in this type of organization are typically geared more to the relationship between individuals than to transparently planned processes. Against this backdrop, this paper discusses the special features of the management processes of medium-sized family businesses and then derives the specific challenges that arise for acquisition and integration processes as a result of the participation of medium-sized family businesses.

Volume 9 of the Alexander Kluge-Jahrbuch begins with a compilation of his most recent works, the images of which express astonishment at the public crises of the 21st century. Kluge's astonishment-whether in the form of animals photographed in war zones, the clash of physical opposites on screens and stages, or machine-generated invisibility on screens-is a constant challenge to our capacity for differentiation. In addition to dialogues with painter Katharina Grosse and poet Ben Lerner, the volume includes a cluster of essays on decolonialism as well as other scholarly contributions on related topics such as technology, iconoclasm, the political and the labor of theory.

Dieser Band nimmt mit seinen vierzehn Beiträgen an der Diskussion über die Bedeutung der Geschichte, ihrer Bewahrung und ihrer Erforschung teil und liefert Beispiele wissenschaftlicher Analysen historischer Quellen unterschiedlicher Art. Er beginnt mit Betrachtungen von Andrzej Radziminski über heikle Prozesse der Geschichtsüberlieferung, die von verschiedenen Faktoren gestört werden können, »viele Fakten werden leider nie in die Geschichte eingehen, während andere, bewusst verändert oder vergessen, ein völlig verfälschtes Bild erschaffen werden.« Durch neue Fakten und/oder neuartige Analyse der Quellen bleibt die Erforschung der Geschichte im ständigen Prozess. Der Gedanke spiegelt sich in den weiteren Beiträgen wider, in denen anerkannte polnische und deutsche Wissenschaftler:innen verschiedene Themen neu aufnehmen oder aufs Neue erforschen.This volume with its fourteen scientific contributions takes part in the discussion on the importance of history, its preservation, and investigation and provides examples of scientific analysis of historical sources of various kinds. It begins with reflections by Andrzej Radziminski on delicate processes of historical transmission. They can be disturbed by various factors, "unfortunately, many facts will never go down in history, while others, deliberately changed or forgotten, will create a completely distorted picture." Through new facts and/or novel analysis of the sources, the investigation of history remains eternal. The idea is reflected in the other contributions, in which recognized Polish and German scientists take up new topics or research them anew.

Magda Grzybowska untersucht den aktuellen Stand der philologischen sowie didaktischen Ausbildung im Rahmen der Germanischen Philologie in Polen. Sie setzt sich mit der Fremd- und Fachsprachenvermittlung für berufliche Zwecke sowie mit der Ausbildung von Fachsprachenlehrenden auseinander. Grundlage ist eine erstmals erstellte Erhebung, Zusammenstellung, Auswertung und Diskussion von Lehrplänen des Studienfachs Germanistik/Germanische Philologie an sämtlichen staatlichen Universitäten Polens, deren Kern eine quantitative und qualitative Aufschlüsselung der untersuchten Curricula bildet. Ihre Arbeit leistet damit einen Beitrag zum aktuellen internationalen Diskurs über die Chancen, Herausforderungen und Grenzen für die Fremd- und Fachsprachendidaktik im germanistischen Studium im Kontext einer engen Zusammenarbeit von Hochschulen mit dem wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Umfeld.Magda Grzybowska examines the current state of philological and didactic training in German Philology in Poland. She analyses both the teaching of foreign and specialised languages for professional purposes as well as the training of specialised language teachers. Her analysis is based on the first-ever survey, compilation, evaluation and discussion of curricula in German Studies and German Philology of all Polish state universities and focuses on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the curricula examined. Therefore, her work contributes to the current international discourse on the opportunities, challenges and limits of foreign and specialised language didactics in German studies in the framework of a close cooperation between universities and the economic and social environment.

The authors analyse macro-level political decisions across various societies as well as individual actions and experiences to advocate for a more inclusive and effective education system capable of driving social change. They consider relationships between politics, education and social change - in various contexts and dimensions. The macro level of educational policy (and politics) is confronted with the micro realities of human biographies. However, the authors do not consider people who are influenced by political decisions as incapacitated "mass". Thus, social change always results from these macro-micro connections. This interdisciplinary book includes themes related to political sciences, education, and sociology, which resulted from the authors' study of contemporary social and education phenomena. It gives insight into interesting paradoxes and controversies.

Forderungen nach Nachhaltigkeit und nachhaltiger Entwicklung werden angesichts der aktuellen Vielfachkrise immer lauter und eindringlicher. Bildung soll Lernende dazu befähigen, an einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung der Gesellschaft und der Umwelt mitzuwirken. Das Konzept Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung umfasst dabei alle Bereiche von Bildung, auch den Religionsunterricht. In den letzten Jahren sind einige konzeptionelle Arbeiten zu religiöser Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung entstanden. In dieser empirischen Untersuchung wird nun die Perspektive der Religionslehrer*innen in den Blick genommen. Sie beschreiben ihre Einstellungen zu und ihre Erfahrungen mit Nachhaltigkeit im Alltag und im Religionsunterricht. Es gelingt Jennifer Jakob dabei, die Rolle der Lehrer*innen in Bezug auf Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung in den Fokus zu rücken.In the light of current multiple crises, calls for sustainability and sustainable development are becoming louder and more powerful. Education should enable learners to contribute to a sustainable development of society and environment. The education concept for a sustainable development encompasses all areas of education, thus also religious education. In recent years, a number of conceptual works on religious education for sustainable development have been published. This empirical study highlights the perspective of religious education teachers. They describe their attitudes and experiences with sustainability in everyday life and in religious education lessons. Jennifer Jakob succeeds in exploring the role of teachers in education for sustainable development.

Aussage und Wert eines Kunstwerkes hängen in besonderem Maße von der Künstlerpersönlichkeit ab, mit der man es verbindet. Dennoch kommt es vor, dass Kunstschaffende die Verbindung zu einem Werk lösen wollen, etwa weil sie sich nicht mehr mit ihm identifizieren können oder weil es sich um eine Fälschung handelt. Juliane Kotzur untersucht unter rechtlichen Gesichtspunkten, auf welche Art und Weise ein Werk verstoßen werden kann: von der einfachen Weigerung, es öffentlich anzuerkennen, bis hin zur Forderung, das Werkstück zu vernichten. Als starkes Gegengewicht werden dabei die Interessen des Eigentümers des betreffenden Kunstwerkes berücksichtigt. Die Integrität und der Wert seines Sacheigentums würden durch eine Desavouierung des Werkes mitunter schwer beeinträchtigt. Dieser Konflikt zwischen Eigentümer und Urheber währt mitunter lang, setzt er sich nach dessen Tod doch mit seinen Erben und Angehörigen fort. The message and value of a work of visual art depend to a great extent on the artist with whom it is associated. Nevertheless, it happens that artists want to cut the ties to an artwork, for example because they can no longer identify with it or because it is a fake. Juliane Kotzur examines from a legal perspective the ways in which a work can be repudiated: From a mere refusal to acknowledge it publicly to a demand to destroy the work. As a strong counterweight, the interests of the owner of the work of art in question are taken into account. The integrity and value of his property could be severely impaired by a disavowal. The conflict between the owner and the author continues with his legal successors after his death.

Amateur film and amateur media practices have attracted increasing interest in recent decades in the context of the "visual turn". Questions of agency, participatory and political/militant film practices, and of representations of "self" and "other" are of interest as well as the institutions and networks of amateur productions. This special issue of "zeitgeschichte" contributes to this field of research by examining international and transnational developments of amateur films in the period after the Second World War. The collected contributions analyze national specifics and regional shapings of practices as well as cultural constructions in amateur film and video, they trace transnational entanglements of amateur media and tackle cross-border amateur filmmaking and internationally and globally shared discursive references and uses of metaphors in video activism. The authors elaborate parallels to organizational structures in amateur film practices in specific sociopolitical and cultural contexts and discuss aspects of memory and the appropriation of hegemonic visual cultures in individual film practices.

Johann Roch untersucht, inwiefern der Wahrnehmungszweifel als philosophisch-skeptischer Inhalt in den beiden Werken der höfischen Epik >Partonopier< und >Diu Crône< literarisch produktiv wird. Unter Einbezug skeptizistischer Debatten in ihrer historischen Dimension argumentiert der Autor dafür, dass auch in literarischen Texten des deutschen Mittelalters ähnliche Problematiken verhandelt werden. Unter dieser Perspektive ergeben sich interessante neue Interpretationsmöglichkeiten, die die bisherige Forschung in eine eher ungewohnte Richtung erweitern.Johann Roch examines to what extent perception-related skepticism serves as a philosophically skeptical theme in the two works of courtly epic literature, 'Partonopier' and 'Diu Crône', and how it becomes creatively productive in a literary sense. By incorporating skeptical debates in their historical dimension, it argues that similar issues are addressed in literary texts of the german Middle Ages. This perspective opens up interesting new possibilities for interpretation, expanding the existing research in a rather unconventional direction.

Der vierte und letzte Teil der Darstellung der »Preußenreisen« beschreibt, wie sie zu Ende gingen und was sie ersetzte. Als 1386/87 der heidnische Großfürst von Litauen zum katholischen König von Polen wurde, beschloss der Deutsche Orden, seinen Kampf gegen Litauen und besonders das noch dreißig Jahre lang heidnisch bleibende Niederlitauen (Samaiten) fortzusetzen. Zunächst folgte ihm die europäische Ritterschaft, dann aber wandte sie sich gegen den neuen, wirklichen Feind, die Osmanen. Eine Verpflanzung an andere Heidenfronten hat der Orden dagegen stets abgelehnt. Die neue Legitimation, die Preußen als Eigentum und Zuflucht des deutschen Adels betrachtete, erlaubte es dem Orden, den Angriffen seiner Feinde während des Konzils von Konstanz zu widerstehen und veranlasste 1422 erneut deutsche Fürsten, nach Preußen zu kommen, zu spät, um den Lauf der Dinge zu wenden. Diese neue Geschichte der verlorenen und wiedergewonnenen Legitimität stützt sich auf intensive Recherchen. Ein Gesamtfazit der vier Teile wird gegeben. Dokumente, Ergänzungen und Indizes werden folgen.The fourth and last part of the study of the "Prussian Voyages" tells how it ended and which were the consequences. When in 1386/87 the pagan grand-duke of Lithuania became the catholic king of Poland, the Teutonic Order decided to continue nevertheless his combat against this pagan country, during a decade with considerable success. Only then the European chivalry turned against it's true ennemy, the Osmanic expansion. A new legitimacy, Prussia thought as foundation and propriety of the German nobility, permitted the order to resist the attacks of it's ennemies during the Council of Constance and caused once again German princes to come to Prussia in 1422, too late to turn the course of events. The Order refused serious engagement on other pagan fronteers, but the European chivalry did, voyaging to other places: Bohemia, Hungary and the Mediterranean. This new history of lost and regained legitimacy is based on intensive research. An overall conclusion of the four parts is given. Documents, Additions and Indices will follow.

These contributions offer fundamental insights into how literary works address and reconceptualize issues of nationalism, groupism, belonging and denationalization in selected European contexts. Various critical perspectives are employed here to highlight modern social and political processes as registered and, to a certain extent, also fashioned by contemporary literary discourses. 'Reimagined communities' emerge from literary redescriptions of existing or imaginary sociopolitical configurations in several European states or regions. All the contributions share a heightened sensitivity to the individual as enmeshed in oppressive geopolitical circumstances. Thereby, literary expressions of how individuality is constrained by social pressures may offer inspiring blueprints for emancipation.

Als ludische Strategie wird hierbei in Comic und Literatur der Umgang mit einer jeweils nationalen Geschichtspolitik ausgemacht. Durch die Aneignung von fremdem literarischen wie archivarischen Material erweist sich Geschichte in weiteren Beispielen als familiär geprägt. Performative Aktualisierungen werden exemplarischen Reenactments, vergangenheitsgegenwärtigen Filmen und Erinnerungsstrategien attestiert. Ergänzt werden die Analysen durch Autor:innen-Gespräche über ge- und erfundene Biografien in Literatur und Comic. Abschließend präsentiert der Band didaktische Zugänge als Comic-Workshop und Interview mit einem Autor.Similar to the 'Doing Gender', a 'Doing Memory' results in seemingly accurate attributions. The volume shows how history is narratively elaborated under different media and generational conditions. In comics and literature, the handling of a respective national politics of history is identified as a ludic strategy. Through the adoption of foreign literary and archival material, history is shown to be shaped by family in further examples. Performative actualisations are confirmed in exemplary re-enactments, past-present films and strategies of remembrance. The analyses are complemented by interviews with authors about found and invented biographies from the perspective of perpetrators and victims in literature and comics. Finally, the volume presents didactic approaches as a comic workshop and an interview with an author.

Bernd Peltzer widmet sich in seiner Arbeit der politischen Rhetorik in englischen Renaissancedramen. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf drei Römerdramen (William Shakespeares »Coriolanus«, Ben Jonsons »Sejanus His Fall«, Philip Massingers »The Roman Actor«) und drei Historien (William Shakespeares »King Richard II« und »King Henry V«, John Fords »Perkin Warbeck«). Bei den untersuchten Textpassagen der Einzeltextanalysen handelt es sich um Schlüsselszenen der jeweiligen Dramen, in denen die Verwendung und Funktion der Rhetorik im Mittelpunkt stehen. Zudem zeigt der Autor exemplarisch die für die Literatur der englischen Renaissance charakteristische Auseinandersetzung mit der Antike.Bernd Peltzer deals with the topic of political rhetoric in English Renaissance dramas. The focus is put on six dramas - three Roman plays and three History plays - in individual text analyses. The three Roman plays are William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus", Ben Jonson's "Sejanus His Fall", and Philip Massinger's "The Roman Actor". Amongst the histories William Shakespeare's "King Richard II", "King Henry V" and John Ford's "Perkin Warbeck" are analysed. Furthermore, the characteristic reflexion of antiquity which is typical for English Renaissance literature is shown as an example. The text passages dealt with in this thesis are often pivotal scenes emphasizing the function of rhetoric.

Sowohl im Erleben von Flucht und Vertreibung als auch mit Blick auf ihren Integrationsprozess nach 1945 unterschieden sich die jungen Vertriebenen von den Angehörigen der älteren Generationen maßgeblich. In regard to integration, cultural and political endeavors, the "Deutsche Jugend des Ostens" (DJO) developed extensive concepts to claim its space within post-war Germany. Reaching out to young sympathizers, the DJO fostered the acquisition of cultural, social, and economic capital among the displaced youth. Over the course of its history, the organization's internal decisions, negotiations, and directives have been vividly reflecting the ties and tensions between the parent generation's values on the one hand and the search for autonomous identity and societal change among the displaced youth on the other.

Parallel bilden sich komplex gestaffelte Rechte am Boden und seinen Erträgen heraus. Die wachsenden Konflikte zwischen und innerhalb dieser noch fluiden Figurationen resultieren in neuen Formen gerichtlicher oder gar militärischer Regelung durch Herrschaftsinstanzen, die ihrerseits unter fortwährendem Anpassungsdruck stehen. Zu den konfliktregulierenden Funktionen von Herrschaft treten solche einer Agrarpolitik auf verschiedenen Ebenen, die nicht nur den aus militärischen Konflikten entstandenen Schäden, sondern auch den laufenden Erfordernissen einer wesentlich auf Nassreisanbau basierenden Agrikultur Rechnung zu tragen haben.In early medieval Japan, the political constitution displays increasingly complex features: both old and new elites gather around two centers of power, the imperial court and the shogunate. At the same time, multi-layered rights over property and income develop. The proliferation of conflicts between and within these fluid figurations eventuate new forms of legal and military regulation by the ruling authorities, who are thus compelled to commit to a cycle of continual adaption. In addition to the conflict-mediating functions of authority, agricultural policies on multiple levels emerge that have to take into account not only the damages incurred in the wake of military escalations, but also the fixed demands of an agriculture rooted in wet rice cultivation.

This book deals mostly with American avant-garde literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and the present-day practice and politics of its translation into Polish, trying to answer the following questions: What are the meaning and the limits of avantgardism? What is the rationale of literary translations and what is their life-cycle in receiving literary polysystems? Furthermore: What is the importance of translation in shaping the politics of meaning - our collective textual practices determining our epistemological perspectives in literature and beyond? And finally: What are the consequences of implementing foreign modes of thinking and making politics in the receiving culture, both in the social sphere and in writing?

"Between Freedom and Security" is an attempt at an interdisciplinary, humanistic-technical consideration of the problem of the need of the self-realizing human being to meet the requirements imposed on him by, among other things, technical norms and legal regulations, which in a certain sense form the framework for his functioning (in a sense the limitation of the individual) and his subjective reception of freedom. Recognizing that the need for freedom and the need for security are constitutive for the self-realizing subject, the contributors present the different aspects of security and the constraints associated with it, and make suggestions for bridging the existing dissonance between what is objectively necessary and what is subjectively and individually justified.

Einige byzantinische Handschriften, die hauptsächlich in das 10./11. Jh. datieren, überliefern ein Korpus antiker Traktate zum Bau von Belagerungsmaschinen und Geschützen und ein dazugehöriges Bildprogramm technischer Illustrationen. Dieses weist in den verschiedenen Handschriften eine auffällige Überlieferungsvarianz von schematischen und gegenständlichen Maschinenillustrationen auf. Katharina Schoneveld vollzieht deren Entwicklung anhand von Bildanalysen und Untersuchungen zur Handschriftentradition nach und interpretiert sie im Kontext der Rezeption antiker kriegstechnischer Literatur in Byzanz. Schließlich geht sie mit einem Vergleich mit spätmittelalterlichen Maschinenbüchern aus Mitteleuropa der Frage nach einer möglichen Rezeption byzantinischer Maschinenillustrationen nach.Several Byzantine manuscripts, mostly dating into the 10th and 11th centuries, transmit a corpus of ancient manuals on building siege engines and artillery devices. A collection of technical illustrations accompanies this corpus. In the different manuscripts it features a peculiar variance in transmission of schematic and representational machine illustrations. Their development is followed through picture analysis and examination of manuscript tradition and will be understood within the context of the reception of ancient military technological literature in Byzantium. Eventually, a comparison with late medieval machine books further pursues the question of a potential reception of Byzantine machine illustrations.
