Der Radsport leistete für das verspätete »nation-building« Österreichs nach 1945 einen wichtigen Beitrag. Bei der Herausbildung von Narrativen zu »Heimat«, »Staat« und »Nation« kam dem Sport eine wesentliche Bedeutung zu. Weil der Wiener Fußball und der alpine Skisport eher Gegensätzlichkeiten betonten, bot sich der Radsport als verbindendes Element an, der in den Nachkriegsjahren zum »Volkssport« mit hohem emotionalen Aktivierungspotenzial avancierte. Die »Österreich-Radrundfahrt« ermöglichte es, das Territorium des Landes mit dem Finger auf der Landkarte zu erfahren. Anhand der Geschichte der Tour d'Autriche und ihrer Heldenfiguren werden in diesem Buch Kontinuitäten und Brüche zu Erster Republik, Austrofaschismus und NS-Zeit sowie die Beiträge des Radsports zur Nationswerdung beleuchtet.Bicycle racing made an important contribution to Austria's belated nation-building after 1945. Sport played an integral role in the formation of narratives about "homeland", "state" and "nation". Because Viennese soccer and alpine skiing tended to emphasize opposites, cycling offered itself as a unifying element, becoming a "people's sport" with high emotional activation potential in the post-war years. The "Österreich-Radrundfahrt" made it possible to experience the territory of the country with one's finger on the map. Based on the history of the Tour d`Autriche and its heroic figures, this book illuminates continuities and ruptures with the First Republic, Austrofascism, and the Nazi era, as well as the contributions of cycling to nation-building.

One of the characteristic features of the linguistic situation of contemporary Iran is the coexistence of two standards of Modern Persian: the written and the spoken. While literature is generally composed in the written variety, the typically "spoken" forms are also to be found in the literary text. Modern spoken Persian in Contemporary Iranian Novels is a study of these. A scrutinous analysis of five carefully selected novels with methods drawing mostly from the register analysis seeks answers to questions such as: what features are characteristic to the spoken variety of language, how are they woven into the literary language, does the relationship between spoken and written registers change over time and how can this process affect the future development of Persian language?

Despite its many benefits, religion can be a source of internal struggle. God seems to be distant or punishing. People feel anger toward God in the face of life events, particularly experiences connected with suffering, injustice, and personal disappointments. The study focuses on three types of religious struggle: guilt and fear of not being forgiven by God, negative emotions toward God, and negative social interactions related to religion. The study examines the predictors and consequences of struggle in the context of psychological well-being. The following issues are addressed: dependence of struggle from personality traits, parental attitudes, humility, and religiosity, relationships of struggles with the indicators of wellbeing in the general population, and people coping with stress.

Krisen haben (zyklische) Konjunktur - Pandemie, Migration, militärische Konflikte, Rezession und nicht zuletzt die vielfach beschworene globale Krise der Demokratie sind nur die markantesten Symptome der scheinbar aus den Fugen geratenen Gegenwart. Mit dem Band wird das Potenzial der Krisendiskurse für literatur- wie kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen erkundet. Zur Debatte stehen sowohl aktuelle als auch historische Auseinandersetzungen mit sozialen wie ökologischen, individuellen und kollektiven Krisenbefunden bzw. Notständen, sich aus diesen ergebende Zukunftschancen sowie Bewältigungsstrategien. Die Zeitspanne der versammelten Analysen reicht bis ins 18. Jahrhundert zurück, der Fokus liegt jedoch auf der Literatur (Prosa, Theater, Lyrik und Comic) des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts.The times are out of joint - pandemics, migration, military conflicts, recessions and, last but not least, the often invoked global crisis of democracy are only the most striking symptoms of the troubled present. This volume explores the potential of crisis discourses for literary and cultural studies. Current as well as historical confrontations with social and ecological, individual and collective states of emergency, future opportunities resulting from them as well as coping strategies are up for debate. The time span of the collected analyses reaches back to the 18th century, the focus however is on literature (prose, theatre, poetry and comics) of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Early Chinese inscriptions show that already the kings of the Western Zhou period (1045-771 BCE) called upon officials to submit remonstrances. However, it was not until the Warring States period (fifth century BCE to 221 BCE) that remonstrance was explained to mean that monarchical rule would be optimized if officials could object to the monarch's decisions. This book examines the history of remonstrance in China from conceptual, institutional, literary, and comparative perspectives, pointing out parallels to European institutions and the expression of dissent in modern China. Special attention is paid to the historical semantics of remonstrance, the strategies and intentions of remonstrants, and the perspective of the rulers who instrumentalized criticism to pursue their own goals.

The contributors of the twelve texts collected in this volume follow two paths: Firstly, there is a methodological path related to the discussion of the interdisciplinarity of discourse studies and the potential of qualitative research based on the study of a single case. Secondly, by taking as a case study the political interview by Tomasz Lis, a leading liberal journalist, with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, chairman of the right-wing Law and Justice party, they delineate possible avenues for an in-depth view of the mechanisms of Poland's highly polarised public debate.

This volume showcases interdisciplinary research on young people's media lifeworlds originating from the research platform #YouthMediaLife at the University of Vienna and its first international conference in 2021. From big questions about our research practices during pandemic times to smaller data sets focusing on specific platforms and historical or geographical particularities, the volume constitutes a diverse collection with a broad thematic heading and, as such, demonstrates the range and scope of this research field. It offers to its readers the opportunity to learn about broader approaches to interdisciplinary research and provides case studies that are very specific in their focus and illustrate irritations and concerns with contemporary media practices.

Die Beiträge des Bandes befassen sich mit (physischer wie anderer) Gewalt, die von Jugendlichen ausgeübt oder ihnen von Erwachsenen etwa in Schulen und Fürsorgeheimen zugefügt wurde. Sie zeigen, dass solche erfahrene wie diskursiv verarbeitete Gewalt nur dann angemessen verstanden werden kann, wenn sie in einen größeren gesellschaftlichen Kontext gestellt wird - sei es hinsichtlich der Frage nach Wehrhaftigkeit, moralisch angemessenem Verhalten oder nach Generationen- und Geschlechterverhältnissen. Zugleich wird erkennbar, dass es zwar über das 20. Jahrhundert hinweg grundsätzlich eine Tendenz zu erhöhter Sensibilisierung für Gewalt und zu ihrer negativen Bewertung gab, abgeschottete Räume mit starkem Autoritätsgefälle dabei aber eine bemerkenswerte Veränderungsresistenz aufwiesen.The contributions in this volume deal with violence (physical and other types of violence) performed by young adults or inflicted on them by adults, e. g. in schools and foster homes. The contributions show that such experienced and discursively processed violence can only be understood correctly, if it is placed in a larger social context - be it with regard to defensibility, morally appropriate behaviour or generational and gender relations. Despite a general tendency towards an increased awareness of violence and its negative evaluation throughout the 20th century, it becomes obvious that isolated spaces with strong hierarchies showed a remarkable resistance to change.

Die europäische Gesellschaft ist religiös plural, weshalb interreligiösem Lernen eine immer größere Bedeutung zukommt. Selten wird dabei beachtet, dass die daran teilnehmenden Schüler*innen mit Vorstellungen und Einstellungen, möglicherweise sogar verfestigten Vorurteilen zu anderen Religionen an einem solchen Unterricht teilnehmen. Diese Lernvoraussetzung hat jedoch Auswirkungen auf das Lernen über- und voneinander, weshalb sie nicht ignoriert werden kann. In dieser Studie erforscht Agnes Gmoser daher, wie Schüler*innen über Angehörige anderer Religionen denken und ob gesellschaftlich verbreitete Vorbehalte bereits in jungen Jahren festzustellen sind. Davon ausgehend entwickelt sie Handlungsoptionen, wie in (inter-)religiösen Bildungsprozessen darauf eingegangen werden kann, um damit zu einem Abbau von Vorurteilen beitragen zu können.European society is religiously plural, which is why interfaith learning is becoming increasingly important. It is seldom taken into account that the students participating in such lessons have ideas and attitudes, possibly even entrenched prejudices about other religions. However, this learning condition has implications for learning about and from each other, so it cannot be ignored. This study therefore explores how students think about members of other religions and whether socially widespread reservations are already evident at a young age. Based on this, options for action will be developed as to how this can be addressed in (inter)religious educational processes in order to contribute to a reduction of prejudices.

Das stille Nebeneinander von Zeit- und Umweltgeschichte hat sich in den letzten Jahren in Richtung eines beredten Austauschs bis hin zu punktueller Kooperation gewandelt. Dazu beigetragen haben nicht nur gesellschaftlich wirkmächtige Umweltfragen wie die "Klimakrise", sondern auch der Umweltgeschichte zugehörende oder nahestehende Historiker:innen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Beiträge dieses Heftes erkunden das Erkenntnispotenzial eines umwelthistorischen Blicks auf Österreich im 20. Jahrhundert anhand verschiedener Themen: die Ressourcenmobilisierung und dagegen erhobene Proteste im Nationalsozialismus, die Beschleunigung der Material- und Energieflüsse und daran entzündete Debatten durch den Marshall-Plan, der gesellschaftliche Naturverbrauch und die mobilisierte Umweltbewegung in den 1970er-Jahren sowie fotografische Repräsentationen der österreichischen Petro-Moderne.The silent coexistence of contemporary and environmental history has changed into an eloquent exchange and has initiated several cooperations in recent years. This is due both to socially-influential environmental challenges as the "climate crisis" and 20th century historians who are closely linked with environmental history. The contributions in this issue explore the potential of an environmental-historical view of Austria in the 20th century on the basis of various aspects: the mobilisation of resources and protests against it during Nazism, the acceleration of material and energy flows and the respective debates ignited by the Marshall Plan, the social consumption of nature and the mobilised environmental movement in the 1970s, as well as photographic representations of Austrian petro-modernity.

»Organisation und Finanzierung«, »Kirchliches Arbeitsrecht«, »Diakonische Bildung« sowie »Diakonische Haltung« - das sind die vier Analysekategorien, in denen Maike Mittelsteiner nach diakonischen Identitäten in der Geschichte des Oldenburgischen Landesvereins für Innere Mission fragt. Der Untersuchungsschwerpunkt liegt auf den knapp drei Jahrzehnten der Weimarer Republik sowie der NS-Diktatur. Doch werden auch die Anfänge der Inneren Mission im Oldenburger Land seit dem Jahr 1882 berücksichtigt. Im Blick der detailreichen Untersuchungen sind sowohl der Landesverein insgesamt als auch die einzelnen Einrichtungen in dessen Trägerschaft - u. a. ein Fürsorgeerziehungsheim. Der Titel »Porzellan der Kirche«, ein Zitat aus dem Jahr 1934, bezeugt eine Selbstdeutung der Inneren Mission als fragil und kostbar zugleich."Organization and financing", "Church labor law", "Diaconal education" and "Diaconal attitude" - these are the four analysis categories in which Maike Mittelsteiner asks about diaconal identities in the history of the Oldenburg State Association for Inner Mission. The focus of the investigation is on the nearly three decades of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi dictatorship. However, the beginnings of the Inner Mission in Oldenburg Land since 1882 are also taken into account. The focus of the detailed investigations is both the state association as a whole and the individual institutions in its sponsorship - including a welfare home. The title "Porcelain of the Church", a quote from 1934, testifies to a self-interpretation of the Inner Mission as both fragile and precious at the same time.

Wo liegt das besondere Potenzial bilingualen Geschichtsunterrichts im Vergleich zu deutschsprachigem? Ein Spezifikum ist der durch die Bilingualität konstruierte Blick auf die Vergangenheit, der dem deutschsprachigen einen in der zweiten Sprache konzeptionalisierten zur Seite stellen kann. Anhand des Themas »Imperialismus« zeigt eine Schulbuchanalyse mithilfe des Concept Mapping-Verfahrens Sinnbildungen auf, die im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Rahmen vorherrschen. Ob bilingual unterrichtete Schüler*innen beide Konzepte eher wahrnehmen, zwischen ihnen differenzieren und unter ihnen koordinieren können als deutschsprachig unterrichtete, zeigt eine an diese Schulbuchanalyse anknüpfende, repräsentative Fragebogenstudie.What is the special potential of bilingual history teaching? One specific feature is that the past is explained not only in one but in two languages. From a constructivist point of view, bilingualism may thus lead to more than one understanding of what, in which ways and why something happened in the past. As a schoolbook analysis shows, "Imperialism" is a great topic to identify different language-inherent concepts of the past. Concept Maps reveal mutual and divergent German and English remembrance cultures. A representative questionnaire study that is linked to this textbook analysis asks, whether bilingually taught students are more likely to perceive both concepts, to differentiate between them, and to coordinate among them than students taught in monolingual German history classes.

Die Digitalisierung des Wissenschaftsprozesses ist mit der Öffnung der Wissenschaften für partizipative Formate auf verschiedenen Beteiligungsebenen eng verbunden. Citizen Science bzw. bürgerwissenschaftliche Ansätze gewinnen dabei auch in den Geschichtswissenschaften zunehmend an Bedeutung. Der Band gibt einen praxisorientierten Einblick in vorhandene Infrastrukturen sowie unterschiedliche Projektansätze in den Kernbereichen zivilgesellschaftlicher Beteiligung an historischer Forschung. Dabei werden exemplarisch Potenziale und Herausforderungen bei der Konzeption, Implementierung und Durchführung von historisch orientierten Citizen-Science-Projekten beleuchtet sowie Erfolgskriterien und künftige Perspektiven herausgearbeitet. Der Band möchte somit zur Debatte um die Nutzung von Citizen Science als Methode innerhalb der historischen Forschung beitragen.The digitalisation of scientific processes is closely linked with the opening of sciences for participative formats on various levels. Citizen Science or community science approaches respectively are becoming increasingly important in history studies. This volume offers a practical insight into both infrastructures and various project approaches in historical research. Potentials and challenges in the conception, implementation and realisation of historically oriented citizen science projects are illuminated and criteria for success and future perspectives are elaborated. The volume thus aims to contribute to the debate on the use of citizen science as a method within historical research.

Immanuel Kant gehört zweifellos zu den bedeutendsten europäischen Philosophen. Vor seinem 300. Geburtstag im Jahr 2024 haben im Rahmen der Kant-Dekade (seit 2014) verschiedene Aktivitäten neue Aspekte seines Wirkens herausgearbeitet, doch ist bisher kaum die Bedeutung der Wirkungsstätte Kants, Königsbergs und der Albertina, näher beleuchtet worden. Dies war Anlass zu einer interdisziplinären Tagung, die die Historische Kommission für ost- und westpreußische Landesforschung, das Ostpreußische Landesmuseum und das Institut für Kultur und Geschichte der Deutschen in Nordosteuropa im städtischen Museum Lüneburg veranstaltet haben. Diese wird im vorliegenden Band dokumentiert. Die Beiträge untersuchen die Bedeutung Kants für die Theorie der Humanität, Kants frühe Jahre, die Entwicklungen an der Königsberger Universität in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts und die spätere Kant-Rezeption.Immanuel Kants probably counts as one of the most important European philosophers. In advance of his 300th birthday in 2024, in the context of the Kant Decade (since 2014), many activities have shed new light on several aspects of his work, but the importance of Kant's basis, Königsberg, both town and Albertus university, has been widely neglected. This was the reason why the Historische Kommission für ost- und westpreußische Landesforschung, the Ostpreußisches Landesmuseum, the Institut für Kultur und Geschichte der Deutschen in Nordosteuropa and the Civic Museum in Lüneburg organized an interdisciplinary conference in Lüneburg in 2021 which is documented in the present volume. The articles discuss the importance of Kant for the theory of humaneness, his early years, the developments at the university of Königsberg in the second half of the 18th century, as well as the later reception of Kant.

Aline Regina Maldener untersucht in ihrer Studie jenseits von Subkulturen jugendlichen »Mainstream« im Westeuropa der 1960er und 1970er Jahre. Dieser wurde von kommerziellen Jugendmagazinen, Jugendmusiksendungen im Fernsehen und Jugendmusikfilmen im Kino nicht nur abgebildet und transportiert, sondern aktiv hergestellt. Populäre Jugendmedien agierten im nationalen wie transnationalen Medien- bzw. Werbe- und Konsumensemble. Neben länderübergreifenden Gemeinsamkeiten oder hybriden Formen bewahrten sie sich erhebliche nationale Spezifika. Die Studie zeigt, dass das Wesen populärer Jugendmedien darin liegt, dass es im Laufe von zwei Jahrzehnten immer wieder aufs Neue ausgehandelt werden musste.Beyond subcultures, Aline Regina Maldener examines youth "mainstream" in Western Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. The latter was not only depicted and transported by commercial youth magazines, youth music programmes on television and youth music films in the cinema, but actively produced. Popular youth media operated within a national and transnational media as advertising and consumer ensemble. In addition to transnational commonalities or hybrid forms, popular youth media retained considerable national specificities. The study shows that the essence of popular youth media lies in the fact that it had to be renegotiated again and again over the course of two decades.

Argumentieren gehört zum Kern von kritischem Denken und vernünftiger Meinungsbildung. Wir leben in einer Zeit des Wandels: Krisen, Konflikte, Kriege, der Fortschritt der Zivilisation und die Entwicklung neuer Technologien verändern die Welt. In der Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaftsforschung lassen sich viele markante Wendepunkte beobachten. Die Abkehr von der strukturalistischen Sprachbetrachtung und die Hinwendung zur kognitiven Sprachauffassung und kognitiv ausgerichteten Sprachanalyse war einer davon. Dies bedingte die Entstehung und Herauskristallisierung neuer linguistischer Teildisziplinen, die das sprachliche Handeln des Menschen aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln untersuchten (z.B. Sozio-, Ethno-, Psycho-, Diskurs- und Ökolinguistik). Die vorliegenden Beiträge liefern aufschlussreiche Erkenntnisse und Forschungsperspektiven sowie neue Fragestellungen und Herangehensweisen an das Phänomen Wende aus linguistischer Sicht.We are living in an era of transformations: The world is changing due to crises, conflicts, wars, the progress of civilization and the development of new technologies, among other things. In the history of linguistics research, many striking turning points could also be observed. The turn away from the structuralist view of language and towards the cognitive view of language and cognitively oriented language analysis was one of them. As a result, new linguistic sub-disciplines emerged and crystalized that examined human linguistic action from different angles (e.g. socio-, ethno-, psycho-, discourse- and eco-linguistics). The contributions presented in this volume provide insightful findings and research perspectives as well as new questions and approaches to the phenomenon of turn-taking from a linguistic perspective.

Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge sollen ein differenziertes Bild der Realisierung des Corona-Diskurses vermitteln. Dementsprechend konzentrieren sich die Studien auf lexikalische Einheiten, mit denen der pandemischen Realität Rechnung getragen wird. Eine natürliche Manifestation der Diskurse sind Texte, denen auch hierin besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird. Beachtung finden ebenfalls Humor in Krisenzeiten und seine Erscheinungsformen wie Witze oder Corona-Memes. Daher gibt der Band einen fundierten Einblick in den Corona-Diskurs mit besonderem Fokus auf die Sprache Deutsch, wobei er auch Untersuchungen zu anderen Sprachen berücksichtigt.The significance of the corona pandemic for societies around the world has been documented in language and communication in various forms. The articles collected in this volume aim to provide a differentiated picture of the realization of the Corona discourse. Accordingly, the studies focus on lexical units, with which the pandemic reality is taken into account. A natural manifestation of the discourses are texts, which are also given special attention in this volume on the Corona discourse. This volume also pays attention to humor in times of crisis and its manifestations such as jokes or corona memes. Accordingly, the anthology gives a well-founded insight into the Corona discourse with a special focus on German, while also considering other languages.

The history of the relationships intertwined by the Taizé Community amongst Christians of Eastern European countries in the second half of the last century has not yet been written. Yet it is a fundamental chapter for understanding the unique international irradiation of the community. The encounter with the different faces of a Christian youth beyond the Iron Curtain who in Taizé experienced an European space at once unified, will become in particular one of the main directions of investment of the community from the early 1960s. It is on this story that the contributions of this volume intend to throw a first light, relying on a completely unpublished documentation and on the witnesses of many protagonists involved in the construction of this unique continental and ecumenical network.

The education process is inextricably linked to the context of socio-cultural needs, and the concept of the profession and the professional role of the teacher are subject to definitional changes. The complex issues of how the school and the teacher function are examined by the authors. Central themes include: How do the school and the teacher function? What social changes is 21st century society undergoing, both in terms of modernization and globalisation? What does the figure of the teacher look like in the 21st century with reference to the historical outline of the institution of school and the teaching profession? To what extent can teachers be subjective? This book is a reflection on the school institution and the person of the teacher, it has been created to highlight the essence of the pedagogical dimension of education, socio-cultural changes, and pedagogical innovations.

Wie haben die repräsentativen Akteure Karl Barth als reformierter Theologe des radikalen Flügels der Bekennenden Kirche, Walter Künneth als lutherische Leitfigur der Jungreformatorischen Bewegung und Emanuel Hirsch als theologischer Kopf der nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Christen den Begriff »Kirchenkampf« verwendet? War ihr »Kirchenkampf« theologisch, kirchenpolitisch oder politisch motiviert? Und nicht zuletzt: Wie ist dieser Kampf heute zu deuten? Was können wir heute daraus für unsere eigene Vergangenheitsbewältigung und Sicht auf Kirche und Politik lernen? Diese und weitere Fragen werden in einer vergleichenden Studie auf einer breiten Quellenbasis wissenschaftlich fundiert und zugleich allgemeinverständlich aufgearbeitet.Karl Barth (Bekennende Kirche), Walter Künneth (Jungreformatorische Bewegung) and Emanuel Hirsch (Deutsche Christen) were certainly influential, distinguished and representative theologians in the so-called "Church Struggle" in Germany in the 1930s. The way they interpreted and talked about this struggle is of great importance for our own understanding of this turbulent era of church history. The main goal of this study is to examine the influence of theological thinking into the interpretation of the "Church-Struggle" to help us to find our own way to deal with this dubious chapter in the history between church and state and complicated Inter-Church Relations.

»Imaginarien des Bösen« befasst sich mit der räumlichen Darstellung des Bösen in ausgewählten Werken von José Eustasio Rivera, Jorge Luis Borges und Alejo Carpentier. Die Untersuchung zielt auf eine kulturwissenschaftlich und narratologisch ausgerichtete Kritik der Annahme einer Ästhetik des Bösen. In den modernen Literaturen Lateinamerikas (hier mit Blick auf spanischsprachige Autoren) gibt sich vielmehr eine postkoloniale Figuration des Bösen zu erkennen, die das Böse über Verräumlichungen kolonialer Sujets fiktional ausgestaltet narrativ vermittelt. Die Bezugnahme auf Formen der Sklaverei und ihre literarischen Modellierungen sind das Charakteristikum dieser modernen Literatur, die die Geschichte(n) Lateinamerikas als Verflechtungsgeschichte Amerikas erzählt. "Imaginaries of Evil" deals with the spatial representation of evil in selected works by José Eustasio Rivera, Jorge Luis Borges, and Alejo Carpentier. The study aims at a critique of the assumption of aesthetics of evil, oriented towards cultural studies and narratology. In the modern literature of Latin America (here with a view to Spanish-language authors), a postcolonial figuration of evil can be discerned, which narratively conveys evil through the spatialization of colonial subjects in a fictionalized form. The reference to forms of slavery and their literary modeling are the characteristics of this modern literature, which tells the history(s) of Latin America as a space of entanglements.

In this volume, Lucyna Harmon compares the episodes that constitute the British TV series Agatha Christie's Poirot with David Suchet with their precursor texts, with the aim of establishing most salient changes between both. These changes are grouped by underlying patterns into twenty-three categories. Their list includes activation, anticipation, amelioration, bohemisation, co-option, depopulation, entertainisation, glorification, human softening, importation, marital reduction, melodramatisation, multiplication, pejoration, political correction, political redirection, politicisation, reviving, romanticisation, social adjustment, social alerting, social correction, teaming and thrill intensification. These categories are postulated as adaptation strategies, suitable as a research tool in adaptation studies.

Unter schwierigen Umständen wurde nach dem Ende der Monarchie 1918 die Republik in Österreich gegründet. Jedes politische Lager kritisierte von Beginn an durchgehend bis 1933/34 die existente, in der Verfassung verankerte Demokratie. Zwar existierte unter den politischen Akteuren der Grundkonsens, dass die Regierungsform »demokratisch« sein sollte, allerdings herrschten zwischen den politischen Parteien unterschiedliche Auffassungen von »Demokratie«. Jede der Parteien wollte einen Idealzustand von Demokratie erreichen, während die in der Verfassung verankerte Demokratie als »politische« bzw. bloß »formale Demokratie« überwunden gehöre. Under difficult circumstances, a republic was founded in Austria after the end of the monarchy in 1918. From the beginning until 1933/34, the leading politicians consistently criticized the existing constitutional democracy. Although there was a basic consensus among political actors that the form of government should be "democratic," different understandings of "democracy" prevailed among the political parties. Each of the parties claimed to replace the existing democratic order by a new and "ideal form of democracy."

This book illustrates that the idea of a 'national' literature is profoundly problematic. Chapters on boundaries and crisscrossing show how a nation and its writers' works do not exist in isolation from their history. Stressing migration and (inter)cultural dialogue, authors explore how the characters in the texts establish a sense of belonging both within the context of migrations and within the context of Lithuania since its independence. The final series of essays in this book discuss Lithuanian literature abroad, that is, in translation.

Literatur als textuelle Welt zweiter Ordnung bietet einen Aushandlungsraum, in dem verschiedene Imaginationen von Erziehbarkeit durchgespielt und gewichtet werden können. Diese Möglichkeit Erziehung zu erzählen nutzt die mittelhochdeutsche Dichtung in überraschend hohem Maße. Um verschiedenen Modellen intergenerationeller Weitergabe in den Texten auf die Spur zu kommen, versteht der Band Erziehung als einen elementaren Faktor des Fortbestands menschlicher Kultur und bestimmt sie als ein sowohl transhistorisch wie auch historisch fassbares Phänomen. So können drei personelle Konstellationen identifiziert und analysiert werden, die sich als zentrale literarische Modelle eines Wissenstransfers zwischen den Generationen erweisen.The European Middle Ages already discussed the question of the relative influence of birth disposition versus environmental influences on a person's behaviour and abilities - and came to very different results. Literature as a textual world of second order provides a space for negotiation in which different imaginations of educability can be explored and evaluated. Middle High German poetry uses this possibility of narrating education to a surprisingly high degree. In order to trace different models of intergenerational transfer in the texts, the study regards education as an essential factor in the continuity of human culture and defines it as a phenomenon that can be grasped both transhistorically and historically. In this way, three configurations in the texts are identified and analysed that prove to be key models of knowledge transfer between the generations.

Die nationalsozialistische Gesellschaft war geprägt von vielgestaltigen kommunikativen Praktiken des sozialen und auch gewaltvollen Ein- und Ausschlusses. Gleichzeitig bildeten sich durch Widerstandshandlungen vielfältige Gegendiskurse heraus. Der Sammelband nimmt konkrete Beispiele kommunikativer Praktiken während des Nationalsozialismus in den Blick und fragt speziell danach, inwiefern diese themen-, textsorten- und akteursspezifisch gebunden waren.Society during National Socialism was marked and shaped by manifold communicative practices of social inclusion and exclusion. Even acts of resistance manifested themselves in and through communication, forming textual counter-discourses. The present volume analyses concrete examples of communicative practices during National Socialism and pays attention to their relatedness to specific themes, text types and actors using them.

Die ,Reformatio Sigismundi' (1439) scheint diese Frage nicht zuletzt formal zu stellen, wenn ihr anonym gebliebener Verfasser seine Ideen auf Deutsch diskutiert und mit volkssprachigen Elementen aus Predigt, Prophetie und politischer Publizistik anreichert. Mitten in der auf dem Basler Konzil geführten lateinischen Debatte um eine Reform von Kirche und Reich entsteht so der erste umfassende Reformtext in deutscher Sprache. Unbeantwortet blieb bisher, weshalb der Anonymus die Volkssprache wählt und wie sich der Sprachwechsel auf Argumentation und Intention des Textes auswirkt. Die Studie arbeitet die ,Reformatio Sigismundi' erstmals literaturwissenschaftlich auf und erprobt dabei unterschiedliche philologische Methoden für die Arbeit mit historischen Quellen.What does it take for a reform to succeed? The 'Reformatio Sigismundi' (1439) seems to pose this question regarding its own literary form: its anonymous author presents his ideas in German while enriching them with vernacular elements from sermons, prophecies and political publicity. Thus, in the midst of the Latin debate on a reform of church and empire at the Council of Basel, emerges the very first comprehensive reform text in German. So far, it remains unanswered why the anonymous author chooses the vernacular and how the change of language affects the argumentation and intention of the text. This study is the first to examine the 'Reformatio Sigismundi' from a literary perspective testing different philological methods in working with historical sources.
