The author identifies seven principles of effective communication from Ephesians 4:25-32. These principles can guide how we choose our words and how we can can guard and grow the critical relationships of our lives. The opening chapter builds on the biblical admonition to "e;speak the truth in love"e; and develops the idea that the goal of confrontation is reconciliation. Armed with this principle, we can choose words that are framed in such a way that the goal of allowing conflict to draw us closer--not divide us further--can be achieved. There are six other principles that help build a biblical practical framework for choosing our words wisely.

Thomas Chalmers, in his classic sermon entited, "e;The Expulsive Power of a New Affection,"e; correctly ascribes subjective power to subjective affections, for love does have an expulsive power, whether one loves God to the despising of self, or loves self to the despising of God. But he incorrectly sides with objective justification, full pardon and gracious acceptance as the power that creates love and the engine that empowers sanctification. He is right to suggest that a new affection has expulsive power, but wrong to suggest that the source and power of a new affection is primarily in the indicative benefits.Jonathan Edwards, on the other hand, sided with regeneration for the obvious reason that without a new nature, the natural man can only be constrained by outside considerations (the indicatives) to superficially walk in newness of life (the imperatives). Such considerations mght produce change that rises as high as the outward performance of the Legalist, but it is still only the superficial height that self-love alone can achieve. The Spirit's work of illuminating the higher glory and beauty of Christ to the soul is the only source of an affection that can be called new. If the expulsive power of a new affection does not dethrone self as one's primary concern in life and theology, then what exactly is being expulsed by the power of the gospel? If one's religion does not surpass one's primary concern for what's in it for oneself, then one's self-love may have an expulsive power, but it will be the light of the glory of God in the face of Christ Jesus that is expulsed by the power of self-love.The irony of the cross was that Christ was crucified by those who already had a knowledge of God's steadfast love and rejoiced in spiritual priviledges. The proper force and source behind the believer's love for God is not found in the objective benefits as they reflect upon the believer's high privileges, but God's power alone as it is exerted in the soul by the Spirit imparting a new heart, new affections and a new principle of action that did not exist prior. Good fruit is produced only by a good tree, and however constrained by outside forces, a bad tree cannot be manipulated to produce fruit contrary to its nature.

Struck Down but Not Destroyed is a study of Second Corinthians, Chapter Four, particularly verses 8-10. There, Paul lists several challenges he has experienced as a pastor and church leader, and how he met each challenge with the grace of God in his heart. He defends himself as a pastor, as a preacher, and as an apostle, countering the claims of those he calls "e;super-apostles"e; (2 Corinthians 11:5). Moreover, he commends himself to the better judgment of those in the leadership of the church at Corinth.Paul was the first to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people at this burgeoning seaport. He was not alone, but he was the leader among these witnesses to the faith. Despite those who tried to undermine his work and deflate his authority, he never wavered in his devotion to the Lord.Whether you're a pastor or engaged in another service vocation, you'll be inspired by Paul's wisdom and the author's reflections and insights.

Dressing Up Death (God's Unbecoming Fit of Grief) is a ten chapter book that provides a parallel metaphoric portrait of how death is all about life. By taking the ultimate person, God the Father, and His view on death through characters, not pat answers, serve as much needed refuge for those who have traveled grief's rocky terrain. Healing comes from not dressing up death, but rather from the honest and intimate comparison that we, as humans, not deny the nature of who God created us to be: life givers and receivers. It is the goal of this book to have readers come away feeling overwhelmingly normal that their emotions toward death, an abnormal event, do indeed reflect the very essence and heart of God Himself.

What is the overall story of the Bible? How do its various parts fit together? How can Jesus claim to be the fulfillment of the promises of God? Christians believe that the sovereign, all-powerful, infinite, Triune God of the universe has chosen to speak to people through the Bible. But sometimes this Bible can be daunting in its size and scope, and many people who read the Bible struggle with understanding how it all fits together. His Unified Word presents an eight-week Bible study that traces the storyline of the Bible from beginning to end and explores how every theme is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus. Twenty Old Testament and twenty New Testament passages reveal the big picture of creation, rebellion, redemption, and restoration. Each one of the forty days in the study guides readers through a Bible passage, an explanatory commentary, and thoughtful interaction with the text. Teaching sections at the end of each week also explain how all of the passages fit together through covenants, types, and promises.Ideal for both individuals and groups, this uplifting study will enrich knowledge of God and love for his unified Word.
