This volume provides a unified mathematical introduction to stationary time series models and to continuous time stationary stochastic processes. The analysis of these stationary models is carried out in time domain and in frequency domain. It begins with a practical discussion on stationarity, by which practical methods for obtaining stationary data are described. The presented topics are illustrated by numerous examples. In 2016, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and the UN Security Council respectively adopted resolutions on the review of the UN peacebuilding architecture, and the concept of "sustaining peace" was formally presented. Since then, the "sustaining peace" agenda has gradually become the core strategy of the peace cause of the UN. The agenda for sustaining peace emphasizes capacity-building for conflict prevention at the regional level.Faced with the escalation of the international security challenge, regional organizations are increasingly playing a prominent role. They have become important participants in the international peace and security agenda by enhancing cooperation with the UN. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as the centre of regional cooperation processes in the Asia-Pacific, established a series of norms and instruments related to conflict prevention. This book intends to promote discussions on linking conflict prevention and/or preventive diplomacy activities in the region with the sustaining peace agenda promoted by both the ASEAN on a regional scale and the UN on a global scale.In a collaboration between the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) and China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), the book provides discussions from the perspective of both Chinese as well as ASEAN scholars on traditional, as well as emerging, topics on sustaining peace, as well as conflict prevention, conflict management, and conflict resolution.

Software-defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are two technology trends that have revolutionized network management, particularly in highly distributed networks that are used in public, private, or hybrid cloud services. SDN and NFV technologies, when combined, simplify the deployment of network resources, lower capital and operating expenses, and offer greater network flexibility. The increasing usage of NFV is one of the primary factors that make SDN adoption attractive. The integration of these two technologies; SDN and NFV, offer a complementary service, with NFV delivering many of the real services controlled in an SDN. While SDN is focused on the control plane, NFV optimizes the actual network services that manage the data flows. Devices such as routers, firewalls, and VPN terminators are replaced with virtual devices that run on commodity hardware in NFV physical networking. This resembles the 'as-a-service' typical model of cloud services in many aspects. These virtual devices can be accessed on-demand by communication, network, or data center providers.This book illustrates the fundamentals and evolution of SDN and NFV and highlights how these two technologies can be integrated to solve traditional networking problems. In addition, it will focus on the utilization of SDN and NFV to enhance network security, which will open ways to integrate them with current technologies such as IoT, edge computing and blockchain, SDN-based network programmability, and current network orchestration technologies. The basics of SDN and NFV and associated issues, challenges, technological advancements along with advantages and risks of shifting networking paradigm towards SDN are also discussed. Driven by the advent of two-dimensional materials, valleytronics is emerging as the next hot field of research in materials science. While the use of charge or spin degrees of freedom in electronic materials as information carriers is familiar and well-appreciated, employment of the valley degree of freedom as an information carrier has remained elusive for many decades. Shortly following the discovery of isolated graphene, 2D semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides were also isolated and investigated. We now understand that these materials can have separately addressable valleys because each valley can be uniquely coupled to a spin state. This imparts the ability to address different valleys (like pseudospins) with electric field, magnetic field, or light, and there is now a real possibility to engineer practical devices based on using valley as the information carrier.Valleytronics in 2D Materials is the first book in the world on the topic of valleytronics. The reader is introduced to the concept via a brief history emphasizing the challenges that impeded its development for so long. We then dive into the valley physics of 2D semiconductors to explain the recent excitement in 2D valleytronics, the scientific investigations to confirm the addressable valleys, and the attempts to engineer valley devices for practical purposes. The text takes on a decidedly practical approach towards the subject, seeking to bring the reader quickly into the field by presenting the minimum theoretical basis for understanding the use of the valley degree of freedom in devices. This book is to be a new edition of Applied Analysis. Several fundamental materials of applied and theoretical sciences are added, which are needed by the current society, as well as recent developments in pure and applied mathematics. Basic mathematical techniques for partial differential equations (PDE) with applications to the life sciences form an integral part of the core curriculum for programs in mathematical biology. Yet, students in such a program with an undergraduate training in biology are typically deficient in any exposure to PDE. This volume starts with simple first order PDE and progresses through higher order equations and systems but with interesting applications, even at the level of a single first order PDE with constant coefficients.Similar to the two previous volumes by the author, another unique feature of the book is highlighting the scientific theme(s) of interest for the biological phenomena being modelled and analysed. In addition to temporal evolution of a biological phenomenon, its limiting equilibrium states and their stability, the possibility of locational variations leads to a study of additional themes such as (signal and wave) propagation, spatial patterning and robustness. The requirement that biological developments are relatively insensitive to sustained environmental changes provides an opportunity to examine the issue of feedback and robustness not encountered in the previous two volumes of this series.

In the Middle East, the world's deadliest organizations, the Islamic State and al Qaeda have firmly established their presence in the Levant and the Gulf. In parallel, state- sponsored Shia threat networks, groups and cells, notably the Lebanese Hezbollah and Houthis operate throughout the Middle East and beyond. Exploiting the conflict zones and their cascading ideologies, both the Sunni and Shia threat entities compete to advance their own interests. Their parent and affiliate entities recruit and radicalise both territorial and diaspora Muslims to fight each other. Unless governments work together to mitigate the threat at the core and the edge, the Middle East and its peripheral territories in Asia and Africa will suffer from terrorism and political violence in the foreseeable future.The response to extremism and its vicious by-product terrorism requires both preventive intelligence-led and pre-emptive community-based security approaches. While developing tactical counter-terrorism capabilities, governments should build strategic capabilities to erode their support bases. The new frontiers in counter-terrorism and extremism - community engagement and rehabilitation - should be integrated into government planning. Unless governments take the lead and work with community leaders, societies will be threatened by the existing and emerging wave of ideologically-motivated violence. Government and community leaders should develop whole-of-government and whole-of-nation approaches to dismantle transnational threats. To contain, isolate and eliminate the evolving threat, the Middle Eastern states should shift from security cooperation to collaboration and partnership.

This monograph offers a fundamentally new approach to facilitate the study of metabolic networks in cells. It aims to overcome the limitations of either just a single FBA solution, or an overwhelming number of extreme pathways in a realistic network. Instead it focusses on the FBA solution space and describes it in a simplified way by extracting just a bounded subspace: the Solution Space Kernel or SSK. This reduces the relevant number of flux space dimensions by orders of magnitude, and allows its location, size and shape to be characterised. It is a multi-stage process, requiring many new concepts and algorithms for manipulating polytopes in high dimensional spaces.The book introduces and develops these concepts in a pragmatic way that takes into account the difficulties of performing analyses in a flux space with dimensions counting in the hundreds or thousands. It emphasizes the details of implementation in computational code and applications to realistic models are demonstrated. For many cases, the number of constraints and flux variables that fully specify the SSK polytope is only a single or double-digit number. This allows the range of metabolic states accessible to a cell to be further interpreted geometrically in terms of a manageable set of orthogonal diameters and aspect ratios. In addition, explicit representative fluxes, giving the centre and periphery of the solution space kernel, become available for further exploration.
