Alleen DeGaris, a native of Missouri who lived most of her adult life in Mexico, travels for three days on the Sunshine Special, a train operated in the early years of the twentieth century by the Missouri Pacific Lines. While the train progresses through the different cities of northern México and the southern United States, it travels into a liminal space where that which was is no longer but what is to come has not yet arrived. As this remarkable woman weaves her story of grief and hope, faith and family, it becomes clear that she, too, like the name of the train on which she rides, is the Sunshine Special.

Ashville enjoyed prosperity after the harsh and lean years of the Depression and WWII. Predominately, low-middle income, there were no social or economic divisions, all were rich in mutual respect and pride of community. As youth, the homogenic culture and ethnicity of our small-town was not recognized. The focus was on the Thursday night dances in the park, the Fourth of July celebration, and winning county sports championships. Teachers were neighbors, compassionate and dedicated to their profession. There was a sense of freedom, but is something was wrong or not to expectations, parents would know about it immediately. An attitude of optimism prevailed, unaware that Ashville, like many rural communities, was not realizing the growth of the metropolitan and industrial areas, and that for the younger generation the future was not likely to be in Ashville. Later in life we understood the blessings and meaning of small-town values, the unique shared experiences, and lasting friendships from growing up in Ashville.

At first you won't believe that there is anything good can come of the pain. You think pain, you think negative, right? There is nothing positive about this! Why God why, you ask. This process is developing maturity and building faith in you. It takes a huge leap of faith to say to God while suffering "God I don't understand the purpose of the pain, but I trust you to have a purpose in it." This can accelerate your Christian growth like nothing else could. Sounds crazy, but pain is a part of life. It has purpose, power, and it has reason.

  • von Frank de Canio

Frank De Canio's Political Ponderings are an arresting array of the usual suspects: sex, love, loss, longing, salient stages on Life's way, all here in a foursquare arrangement, as metrically precise as their content is sometimes emotionally charged. They seem to be a litany of Frank's psychological preoccupations as post-adolescent perspectives wrapped up in a neat package of formal poems to pique the astute reader's sensibilities. A pleasing read indeed.

While endeavoring to tell this story, I needed clarification on which approach to take. I could present this work in an entirely academic format. However, I am reminded of what my comparative religions professor would say at the beginning of his lectures..." Intellectuals are boring. We will attempt to tell the story from the griot format. You may have wondered why I am writing this book. This is the third book in my series from the Yoruba-American Theological Arch ministry. Inspired by the library in the Oyotunji Village in South Carolina, these books are intended to educate our children, students, clients, and followers of our beliefs, customs, and traditions. The first book in the series, "Ile Ifa International," was presented as a format for beginning worship and establishing your spiritual home, or "Ile," as we call it. The second book, "The Voodoo Kings," was presented to emphasize the elders in the Diaspora and their work. Art...art, love of culture and tradition, and respect for elders and teachers are essential to practicing the tradition. Due to the demonization of the tradition in Hollywood and other media sources, the beauty and refinement of art and the genius of the literature have been reduced to the default term "Voodoo" to represent the many manifestations of the tradition throughout the diaspora. We love the practice in all its images and attempt to educate beyond the simplifications. It is their birthright for Yoruba Americans, and you should know which tradition resonates with your soul or spirit. In this latest book. "Bablawo" looks at the Yoruba Americans' future and their vision for the future in the Diaspora.
