The natural attraction between a woman and a man is one of the basic aspects
of human life. It is the nectar of life. However, caste and religion has been
poisoning this nectar. Religious antagonism does not tolerate inter-religious love
and ruins it. The unblemished romances of young minds are devastated by the
reactionary religious attitude. Religious extremists view such love as a war
against their religion. Thiruvalluvar says love cannot be suppressed. The human
mind inflicted by divisions refuses to give that honor to love that transcends
caste, religion and class boundaries. Salma's novel deals with the romances of
the period when love and politics intersect.
