The aim of this paper is to analyse the grotesque and the sublime in Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, published in 1890, and in Oliver Parker's film adaptation of the same name (2009). We carried out a bibliographical survey in the fields of literature and film theory, and observed aesthetic categories that emerged in classical antiquity, passing through the plastic arts and transiting through 19th century literature, contributing in some way to the artistic and visual sphere of the 21st century. These categories are articulated within 19th century European Romanticism, when Victor Hugo, Wolfgang Kayser, among other scholars, showed the critical and philosophical discussions about both aesthetics; we are also subsidised by the concept of ugly and beautiful raised by Umberto Eco. Therefore, our research observes the approximations between verbal and non-verbal narrative, identifying the grotesque and the sublime in a dialogue from text to screen that involves the characterisation, adaptation, translation and transposition of the character Dorian Gray, showing that these categories offer the necessary subjectivity, important for film adaptation.

L'objectif de cet article est d'analyser le grotesque et le sublime dans le roman d'Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, publié en 1890, et dans l'adaptation cinématographique du même nom d'Oliver Parker (2009). Nous avons effectué une étude bibliographique dans les domaines de la littérature et de la théorie du cinéma, et observé des catégories esthétiques qui ont émergé dans l'antiquité classique, passant par les arts plastiques et transitant par la littérature du XIXe siècle, contribuant d'une certaine manière à la sphère artistique et visuelle du XXIe siècle. Ces catégories sont articulées au sein du romantisme européen du XIXe siècle, lorsque Victor Hugo et Wolfgang Kayser, entre autres, ont montré les discussions critiques et philosophiques sur les deux esthétiques ; nous sommes également subventionnés par le concept de laid et de beau soulevé par Umberto Eco. Par conséquent, notre recherche observe les approximations entre la narration verbale et non verbale, en identifiant le grotesque et le sublime dans un dialogue du texte à l'écran qui implique la caractérisation, l'adaptation, la traduction et la transposition du personnage de Dorian Gray, en montrant que ces catégories offrent la subjectivité nécessaire, importante pour l'adaptation cinématographique.

Il presente lavoro si propone di analizzare il grottesco e il sublime nel romanzo di Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray, pubblicato nel 1890, e nell'omonimo adattamento cinematografico di Oliver Parker (2009). Abbiamo condotto un'indagine bibliografica nei campi della letteratura e della teoria cinematografica e abbiamo osservato categorie estetiche che sono emerse nell'antichità classica, passando per le arti plastiche e transitando per la letteratura del XIX secolo, contribuendo in qualche modo alla sfera artistica e visiva del XXI secolo. Queste categorie sono articolate all'interno del Romanticismo europeo del XIX secolo, quando Victor Hugo, Wolfgang Kayser, tra gli altri studiosi, hanno mostrato le discussioni critiche e filosofiche su entrambe le estetiche; siamo anche sovvenzionati dal concetto di brutto e bello sollevato da Umberto Eco. Pertanto, la nostra ricerca osserva le approssimazioni tra narrazione verbale e non verbale, identificando il grottesco e il sublime in un dialogo dal testo allo schermo che coinvolge la caratterizzazione, l'adattamento, la traduzione e la trasposizione del personaggio di Dorian Gray, dimostrando che queste categorie offrono la necessaria soggettività, importante per l'adattamento cinematografico.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar lo grotesco y lo sublime en la novela de Oscar Wilde El retrato de Dorian Gray, publicada en 1890, y en la adaptación cinematográfica homónima de Oliver Parker (2009). Realizamos un estudio bibliográfico en los campos de la literatura y la teoría cinematográfica, y observamos categorías estéticas que surgieron en la antigüedad clásica, pasaron por las artes plásticas y transitaron por la literatura del siglo XIX, contribuyendo de algún modo a la esfera artística y visual del siglo XXI. Estas categorías se articulan dentro del Romanticismo europeo del siglo XIX, cuando Victor Hugo, Wolfgang Kayser, entre otros estudiosos, mostraron las discusiones críticas y filosóficas sobre ambas estéticas; también nos subvenciona el concepto de feo y bello planteado por Umberto Eco. Por lo tanto, nuestra investigación observa las aproximaciones entre la narrativa verbal y no verbal, identificando lo grotesco y lo sublime en un diálogo del texto a la pantalla que involucra la caracterización, adaptación, traducción y transposición del personaje Dorian Gray, mostrando que estas categorías ofrecen la subjetividad necesaria, importante para la adaptación cinematográfica.

Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, das Groteske und das Erhabene in Oscar Wildes 1890 erschienenem Roman Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray und in Oliver Parkers gleichnamiger Verfilmung (2009) zu analysieren. Wir haben eine bibliografische Untersuchung in den Bereichen Literatur und Filmtheorie durchgeführt und ästhetische Kategorien beobachtet, die in der klassischen Antike entstanden sind, durch die bildenden Künste gingen und durch die Literatur des 19. Diese Kategorien wurden in der europäischen Romantik des 19. Jahrhunderts formuliert, als Victor Hugo, Wolfgang Kayser und andere Gelehrte die kritischen und philosophischen Diskussionen über beide Ästhetiken aufzeigten; wir werden auch durch das Konzept des Hässlichen und Schönen von Umberto Eco unterstützt. Unsere Forschung beobachtet daher die Annäherungen zwischen verbaler und nonverbaler Erzählung, identifiziert das Groteske und das Erhabene in einem Dialog vom Text zur Leinwand, der die Charakterisierung, Anpassung, Übersetzung und Umsetzung der Figur Dorian Gray beinhaltet und zeigt, dass diese Kategorien die notwendige Subjektivität bieten, die für die Filmadaption wichtig ist.
