From the Hamlet acted on a galleon off Africa to the countless outdoor productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream that now defy each English summer, Shakespeare and Amateur Performance explores the unsung achievements of those outside the theatrical profession who have been determined to do Shakespeare themselves. Based on extensive research in previously unexplored archives, this generously illustrated and lively work of theatre history enriches our understanding of how and why Shakespeare's plays have mattered to generations of rude mechanicals and aristocratic dilettantes alike: from the days of the Theatres Royal to those of the Little Theatre Movement, from the pioneering Winter's Tale performed in eighteenth-century Salisbury to the Merchant of Venice performed by Allied prisoners for their Nazi captors, and from the how-to book which transforms Mercutio into Yankee Doodle to the Napoleonic counterspy who used Richard III as a tool of surveillance.

Selected contributions to the Ninth World Shakespeare Congress, which took place in July 2011 in Prague, represent the contemporary state of Shakespeare studies in thirty-eight countries worldwide. Apart from readings of Shakespeare's plays and poems, more than forty chapters map Renaissance contexts of his art in politics, theater, law, or material culture and discuss numerous cases of the impact of his works in global culture from the Americas to the Far East, including stage productions, book culture, translations, film and television adaptations, festivals, and national heritage. The last section of the book focuses on the afterlife of Shakespeare in the work of the leading British dramatist Tom Stoppard.Published by University of Delaware Press. Many hospitals in the 83 countries classified by the World Bank as Low & Low/Middle income struggle to provide safe anaesthesia. They face problems with unreliable equipment, poor electricity supplies and lack of oxygen that would close down most western hospitals. Equipment that can provide safe anaesthesia in these situations does exist, and this book explains what it is, how it works and how to use it. Systems that use air as carrier gas (Draw-over) and oxygen concentrators as oxygen sources are ideally suited for locations where infrastructure is lacking. The book also explains why a different approach is required, and how a western-trained anaesthetist can adapt to a period of service overseas. Dr Mike Dobson has run and taught courses on Anaesthesia for Developing Countries in Oxford and Africa for 36 years; much of the contents of this book derive from his extensive experience.
