Many hospitals in the 83 countries classified by the World Bank as Low & Low/Middle income struggle to provide safe anaesthesia. They face problems with unreliable equipment, poor electricity supplies and lack of oxygen that would close down most western hospitals. Equipment that can provide safe anaesthesia in these situations does exist, and this book explains what it is, how it works and how to use it. Systems that use air as carrier gas (Draw-over) and oxygen concentrators as oxygen sources are ideally suited for locations where infrastructure is lacking. The book also explains why a different approach is required, and how a western-trained anaesthetist can adapt to a period of service overseas.
Dr Mike Dobson has run and taught courses on Anaesthesia for Developing Countries in Oxford and Africa for 36 years; much of the contents of this book derive from his extensive experience.
