Mein Interesse für Geschichte und Militärgeschichte hat frühe Wurzeln, die bis in meine Kindheit und Jugend zurückreichen.1963 wurde ich Mitglied der Dresdner Fachgruppe Kulturhistorische Zinnfiguren im Kulturbund der DDR. Gegenstand unserer Tätigkeit war u. a. die Arbeit mit einschlägiger Literatur. In der Fachgruppe hatte ich Richard Knötels "Uniformenkunde" kennengelernt und legte mir eine Sammlung zum Thema Uniformenkunde an, die ich später zu einer Materialsammlung über Leben und Werk des Historienmalers erweiterte. Diese umfangreiche Arbeit war 2013, ein Jahr vor Richard Knötels 100. Todesjahr, abgeschlossen. Damals trat die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Heereskunde an mich heran mit dem Anliegen, meine Materialsammlung als Knötel-DVD in limitierter Auflage herauszugeben. Dies entsprach auch meinen Intentionen, denn eine so umfangreiche Arbeit nur für den Eigenbedarf wäre unvertretbar gewesen. In der Folgezeit hatte ich mich der Schaffung und Herausgabe von Büchern, vorwiegend zu militärhistorischen Themen zugewendet, die alle als Digitaldruckausgaben bei BOD Norderstedt erschienen sind. Darunter waren auch Buchtitel zu Knötels Uniformenkunde. Bei dem Umfang der Literatur von und über Richard Knötel fiel auf, dass eine Knötel-Biographie bisher fehlte. Ich hatte seit Jahren geplant, diese Lücke zu schließen. Anfang des Jahres 2024, im hohen Alter von fast 92 Jahren, wurde mir klar: Wenn die Knötel-Biographie überhaupt noch erscheinen soll, dann muss das jetzt geschehen. Ich wählte als Form die Anthologie. Dadurch konnte die Knötel-Biographie vielseitig und abwechslungsreich gestaltet werden.Das Buch liegt nun fertig vor. Ich übergebe es der Öffentlichkeit in der Hoffnung auf freundliche Aufnahme und mit dem Wunsch für eine weite Verbreituung.
