The first complete biography of the Baltimore Orioles' Hall of Fame baseman Brooks Robinson, the greatest defensive third baseman of all time.Finalist for the 2014 Casey Award!Selected by the National Baseball Hall of Fame for the 2014 author's seriesBrooks Robinson is one of baseball's most transcendent and revered players. He won a record sixteen straight Gold Gloves at third base, led one of the best teams of the era, and is often cited as the greatest fielder in baseball history. Credited with almost single-handedly winning the 1970 World Series, this MVP was immortalized in a Normal Rockwell painting. A wholesome player and role model, Brooks honored the game of baseball not only with his play but with his class and character off the field.Author of The Bird: The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych, Doug Wilson returns to baseball's Golden Age to detail the birth of a new franchise through the man who came to symbolize it as one of baseball's most beloved players. Through numerous interviews with people from every part of the legendary player's life, Wilson reveals never-before-reported information to illuminate Brooks's remarkable skill and warm personality.Brooks takes readers back to an era when players fought for low-paying yearly contracts, spanning the turbulent 60s and 70s and into the dawning of the free agent era. He was elected to the MLB All-Century Team and as president of the MLB Players Alumni, Brooks continues to influence today's baseball players. In the climate of astronomic salaries, steroids, off-field troubles, and heroes who let down their fans, Brooks reminds baseball fans of the honor and glory at the heart of America's favorite pastime.

"A striking and honest portrait of a man overcoming racism in a place that barely acknowledged its existence." —Publishers WeeklyBill Garrett was the Jackie Robinson of college basketball. In 1947, the same year Robinson broke the color line in major league baseball, Garrett integrated big-time college basketball. By joining the basketball program at Indiana University, he broke the gentleman's agreement that had barred black players from the Big Ten, college basketball's most important conference. While enduring taunts from opponents and pervasive segregation at home and on the road, Garrett became the best player Indiana had ever had, an all-American, and, in 1951, the third African American drafted in the NBA. In basketball, as Indiana went so went the country. Within a year of his graduation from IU, there were six African American basketball players on Big Ten teams. Soon tens, then hundreds, and finally thousands walked through the door Garrett opened to create modern college and professional basketball. Unlike Robinson, however, Garrett is unknown today. Getting Open is more than "just" a basketball book. In the years immediately following World War II, sports were at the heart of America's common culture. And in the fledgling civil rights efforts of African Americans across the country, which would coalesce two decades later into the Movement, the playing field was where progress occurred publicly and symbolically. Indiana was an unlikely place for a civil rights breakthrough. It was stone-cold isolationist, widely segregated, and hostile to change. But in the late 1940s, Indiana had a leader of the largest black YMCA in the world, who viewed sports as a wedge for broader integration; a visionary university president, who believed his institution belonged to all citizens of the state; a passion for high school and college basketball; and a teenager who was, as nearly as any civil rights pioneer has ever been, the perfect person for his time and role. This is the story of how they came together to move the country toward getting open. Father-daughter authors Tom Graham and Rachel Graham Cody spent seven years reconstructing a full portrait of how these elements came together; interviewing Garrett's family, friends, teammates, and coaches, and digging through archives and dusty closets to tell this compelling, long-forgotten story.

Chronicling Lamont Bryant's childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, Coach B Fearless: Beating All Odds tells the story of inner-city basketball life in Chicago. At times educational, at times historical, Bryant tells his story: the story of how he rose from humble beginnings to become the man he is today. It's a profound tale of both his personal and professional journeys. Bryant has played alongside, coached, and worked with some of the top names in basketball in high school, the NCAA, and the NBA. Both of the documentary movies Hoop Dreams, in 1994, and its sequel, Hoop Reality, in 2007, were filmed on his courts, about his boys. Just as each of these are must-see movies, Coach B Fearless: Beating All Odds is a must-read book.About the AuthorLamont Bryant has coached basketball his entire career, and he took several Marshall High School Varsity Men's teams downstate to win back-to-back 3rd place awards in 2006 and 2007. Upon his firing, his team rallied and protested on his behalf. Finally, the following year, 2008, without his presence, his team would dedicate the season to him and go on to win a city and state basketball title. In addition to coaching several basketball teams of young men over the years, Bryant was also a mentor. He supported them, nurtured them, and taught them both on and off the court. Bryant currently lives in Chicago and he is still mentoring kids on and off the street. Although he is no longer coaching basketball, Bryant is still mentoring and developing basketball players and student athletes. He is one of the directors of "PCF" Basketball Academy along with Coach James "Grapes Williams and Gulliver JR Washington." This is his first published book.

Now in paperback, a chronicle of the most important year in Tiger Woods’s legendary career, the season that began after recovering from major knee surgery and ended with shocking scandal. Since his professional debut in 1996, Tiger Woods changed golf more than any other player in history. His major knee surgery in 2008 and subsequent extended absence from professional competition threw into doubt his ongoing quest to surpass the one great record that remains for him—Jack Nicklaus’s eighteen major championship wins. In early 2009, with the status of Woods’s health and playing ability up in the air, journalist Robert Lusetich set out to cover this highly anticipated season, only to have it end in the most unexpected way imaginable. Unplayable offers a richly compelling narrative of Tiger’s victories and defeats—all while conveying the untold story of the bitter rivalries and ongoing tensions among top players—and explains how Woods managed to lead a double life while dominating in one of the world’s most competitive sports. Including interviews with tournament directors, agents, caddies, PGA Tour officials, sponsors, rival players, and those inside Woods’s own camp, Unplayable is the ultimate behind-the-scenes look into one of the most important seasons in the history of golf.
